We hired Garden Mamas to maintain our mature hillside garden. While we thought it a bit strange…read morethat we had a different crew out most every time, we were assured by Tamara that she had communicated what needed to be done - she was managing the crew. This method seemed to work mostly, although we had to tell the crew each visit what to do, as mostly instructions had been partially communicated. One day, she sent two new people. We told them to trim two bushes on the stairwell and to pick up the leaves, nothing else. This was also communicated to Tamara a few days prior, but like most times, the crew seemed clueless as to what to do. When they were done and had left, we discovered that they had BUTCHERED our garden - most of five++ years of growth was cut away and in a most unappealing fashion. Her crew ripped out plants that a previous crew had installed only a month prior, had trimmed four bushes that were covering an unsightly wall into lollipop shapes, completely exposing the wall, trimmed new growth off of once per season budding plants without any care for shape or aesthetics, butchered slow growing manzanita plants that may never recover, etc etc etc. We were appalled and contacted her. Tamara responded to our concerns, but would not or could not take personal or financial responsibility for making us whole. She told us that the crew she sent was inexperienced and had never worked on a personal, mature garden (only on storage facilities and office complexes), and that she did not have the $$ to replace the plants destroyed or to pay for someone else to replace the plants (as we told her that we could not work with her anymore). We thought about going to the CSLB so that we could at least recover her bond, but did the time/money calculus and finally settled on her paying for two plants to be replaced, at another landscaper's wholesale cost (approx $500). So far, it has cost us over $10000 to get the garden back to where it was, and it will take a few years for it to look as good as it did prior to November 2025. We tried to support this independent, woman-owned business; but her model of a different crew every time coupled with an inability to run her business in a fiscally responsible manner makes it impossible for us to recommend her to ANYONE

The project was completed within the time she estimated. Invoicing/payment process was clear and easy. I provided photos of the types of plants I liked (from other people's yards) and they provided a list of recommendations with descriptions and pricing as well as placement suggestions. I appreciated Tamara checking in on me a a few times after they planted to see how things were going and reminding me to turn off the water during the rainy season. It's seven months later and I am still enjoying admiring and tending to my plants as they grow.

Ease of quoting process Before coming out in person, they were able to give us a ballpark price based on dimensions, fence type, and site images. This allowed me to decide whether to move forward and I thought this was really respectful of my time. Then, Dago, the owner, came for the site visit and to discuss details. 2. No bait and switch In ironing out the details, there was some miscommunication about whether staining was included. Dago was able to meet us halfway with the price increase. This honest business style continued throughout the project and no change orders or unexpected price increases happened. 3. Detail oriented Throughout the project, we discussed details such as fence posts placement relative to tree roots, post height, etc. Dago was both available in person and by email via his assistant Maria. It was also nice to have responses confirmed in writing so that things were clear and there would be no bait and switch. 4. For the past two years I was watering my lawn all the time, sometimes twice a day during Summer and whenever we vacationed or left home for a week I was always worried about the lawn dying and all the effort it would take to regrow. It started to become a chore rather than something enjoyable. We finally decided to get a Sprinkler System installed and so glad we found Jon. Communication was great right away with super fast replies on Yelp and I believe Jon even came the next day for an estimate. He finished the sprinkler system in less than a week which is what he quoted with excellent attention to detail and a very honest price. The complexity was we were doing concrete work at the time so there were two contractors at our house at the same time. He set me up with a 3 zone system, the front area is exposed to a lot of sun and I always struggled with keeping things growing there. The cool thing is the Rachio system he installed automatically chooses ideal times to water based on daily weather reports. You can see the "after" pictures which show my lawn is still nice and green despite the heat and now I get to water for pleasure instead of doing it as a task! I enjoyed bantering with Jon as well, he is a very knowledgeable guy and also very easygoing and chill to talk to.

Good communication by txt about the upcoming delivery and when the truck arrived, I was off-site but had the area prepped and the driver dropped it off perfectly on the tarp. I had a great experience and the soil is great so far, seeds already sprouting! Will be back for more materials!

He is great to work with -- collaborative, professional, responsive, and flat out a really nice guy. This was a huge project with many twists and turns along the way -- months of heavy rain, giant tree roots in unexpected places, faulty irrigation valves, on and on. Henry always persevered and figured out a way through. When we made changes I never felt nickel and dimed. And it truly felt like he had our best interests in mind. What a massive change of pace from other contractors who seem to be primarily concerned with closing out a project (despite open issues) so they can move on to other things. The end result of the project is beautiful. The pricing seemed very fair, especially compared to other companies around the area. Overall, high marks to these guys. Definitely give them a look.

We contacted Henry about a month ago to receive a quote for a full yard remodel including a large paved area on the side of the house and the back as well as a front yard with an outdoor kitchen. Henry came to our home and we described in great detail the scope of every single portion of the work. There were a few things that we had not yet 100% decided and decided to gather Henry's recommendation for these. Henry arrived and took measurements and returned with a quote that was very generic and lacking many of the items we had discussed. Interestingly though, the quote clearly stated that anything NOT included in the quote had to be considered a work change and that a difference will be billed... Since many of the things we discussed together were not in the quote, we asked for clarification and he immediately replied mentioning that (with very few exceptions) the majority of the items we had inquired about were also included, just not listed. When we asked to revise the quote and include these in writing we started receiving a few emails mentioning that wood was expensive and that he needed to add some more amount for some unforeseen possible roots under the area where we wanted to place pavers and the quote started skyrocketing without reason. When we voiced that he had mentioned that these items were included, he replied saying that we made great points and that he would send a revised quote asap including all the scope of work. We wondered if we had not been clear with him, so we went out of our way to generate a sketch-up 3D rendering of the space we wanted to make sure that there was no misunderstanding. We were asked to wait a few days more to have a final quote, then no more answers. When we inquired again, we were told by Henry that after some more consideration he had decided not to take our job. Seriously? So we now have a great 3D rendering of the space that we want but we will need to restart looking for a (BUT this time serious and conscientious) person able to create it. Please do yourself a favor and look elsewhere, unless you are willing to take a bet and have several items added after the fact as a work change.

I wanted a south of France / Napa vibe, and Jesica delivered. Jesica and her crew were easy to communicate with, worked diligently to get the job done, and provided incredible level of service for a reasonable quote. Her crew went above and beyond with the irrigation repairs, and even went out of their way to fix a few boards on my deck that they notice were loose; super attention to detail and quality work.

Not usually too much of a problem for us, since we like the price and quality of the work when it's done. This year, however, he rescheduled work on us three times, which is a bit excessive. I try to be a reasonable person and I, in my opinion gave BAYSL more than enough 2nd, 3rd and even…read more4th chances. Despite their claim of being the "#1 concrete driveway contractor in the SF Bay Area," and assurances of quality and timeliness, my experience with BAYSL was overwhelmingly negative. If you value a correctly done or on-time project, I strongly advise looking elsewhere. Communication has been a HUGE issue. Repeated calls, texts, emails, and follow-up attempts were consistently ignored. Furthermore, BAYSL failed to honor their written "1-year workmanship warranty" when problems arose, choosing instead to abandon the project and cease contact. The project involved a steep driveway requiring traction lines, which BAYSL assured me they could handle. Despite extensive discussions and detailed visual aids provided to ensure alignment, the execution was deeply flawed from the beginning. The initial wooden form was uneven and wavy, requiring my intervention to correct. The first concrete pour was equally problematic. On a day exceeding 90 degrees, the team appeared unprepared and struggled to implement the agreed-upon traction lines, resulting in a visibly messy driveway. Ultimately, they agreed to cut out and redo the entire driveway. Trusting their expertise, I allowed them a second attempt in October 2023. I was assured they had prepared and tested the necessary tools for the traction lines. However, on the day of the replacement pour, their new tool appeared unused, and my concerns were dismissed. Predictably, the second attempt to create traction lines also failed, resulting in a rough finish. While a discount was provided to placate me on now owning an ugly driveway, the issues did not end there. Within 6-8 months, cracks appeared in the concrete, and the overlays used for curb cleanup began to break. I reported these issues in June 2024. After a week's delay, they promised to follow up, but it took another two weeks and a follow-up email to receive a response. Eventually, AJ and Danny inspected the damage and agreed to address it. However, this was followed by another period of silence. After multiple follow-up emails in July and August, AJ finally outlined a plan of action in mid-August and promised a date for repairs. Despite my prompt response, there was no further communication. Subsequent follow-up emails in September and October were largely ignored, with a brief reply in late September stating repairs would occur "in the coming month." A request for a phone call was also ignored. By late 2024 and early 2025, their Yelp and Google listings indicated temporary closure, and their company email address bounced. I assumed the situation was a lost cause. However, noticing their Yelp page reactivated recently, I decided to try again. Unsurprisingly, there was no response to my outreach. As a last resort, a friend contacted them for a landscaping inquiry, and Dennis responded, expressing interest in new work. This provided me with a working alternative email address, which I used to contact Dennis and AJ again about the outstanding repairs. Dennis responded that they "never got any of the emails" and were "waiting for better weather conditions" - despite months of inaction across various weather conditions. He also stated he was no longer involved in day-to-day operations and directed me to Danny. I texted Danny, who said AJ would contact me. I have yet to hear from AJ, and Danny no longer responds to my texts. In summary, BAYSL demonstrated a pattern of poor communication, unprofessional execution, failure to honor their warranty, and ultimately, abandonment of the project. Their initial claims of being a top contractor in the Bay Area are in stark contrast to the reality of my experience.

It entailed: removing and/or pruning some of the existing plants, planting new ones, removing the existing irrigation drip lines + installing new ones, a new water valve, and installation of new edge stoning. From the time I contacted John, he was prompt in responding, setting up a time to meet with me, and providing a recommendation. John was very professional, communicative, and his pricing was very fair and transparent. Throughout the project, John and his crew went above and beyond, providing additional value. What particularly impressed me with John was his creativity and eye for design, which was very helpful when setting up this project. He had ideas on the layout & plants to select from. I have a large and unique garden so John and I had a very good chat about the work I've done on it. I think he is genuinely very passionate about what he does. The price per foot (same materials, design) were: $120, $145, $179, $222. I've found that when it comes to fencing and landscaping, there is a huge range of vendor prices (and personalities!) So it's best to get multiple quotes. John was the $179 quote, but he followed up with me and offer to renegotiate the price after learning he was on the higher end. I feel that he would have done a good job, but my neighbor and I were also happy with the other quotes we received.

Our yard in particular is on a large incline, and Lisa worked creatively to determine solutions that fit our needs. They also drove the Oakland permitting process, which was long and arduous. Once construction started, they were efficient and continued an open line of communication when decisions needed to be made. The whole team, from designer, to project manager, to workers were kind and courteous. I would recommend Lazar to anyone looking to improve their landscaping and hardscaping.

Once the project started, everything was done on time, prices were very competitive, and in the end we feel we got everything we paid for and more. We also really liked the Lazar crew. They were with us for four months and the entire time they worked really hard, cleaned up every day, and always addressed our questions or concerns. Lastly, several months after the project was over, we discovered a leak in the yard. The Lazar crew came out right away and figured out that it was our neighbor's sprinklers. They fixed the problem and our neighbor was thrilled and will probably hire them too!
