A salesperson came door-to-door to my uncle's house in Antioch, CA and convinced him to install solar panels on his home. At the time, my uncle said that someone "just went up on the roof and installed panels and it was all free." My uncle is a widowed Vietnam Vet who is 100% disabled. At the time of this sale, he was 80 years old and living alone with dementia. The panels are not working and have been reported to Empower, the installer, EverBright, the leasing company, and Omedian, the company that services the panels. The PG&E bill has never reflected a reduction in monthly cost for the solar. My uncle is now in a memory care facility and our family is committed to a $212.56 monthly payment to Everbright Solar for 25 years. My uncle never would have agreed to this purchase had he fully understood the financial obligation. At his age, he would never financially benefit from such a purchase. BEWARE!!! We signed up because we were told our monthly payment would be a fixed $470 and that solar would save us money. What was never clearly explained to my family was that the payment increases every year. At $470 per month, the deal sounded reasonable. But after reviewing the terms, the payment will rise to about $550 per month in 5 years, around $667 per month in 10 years, and over $1,000 per month by the end of the agreement. During the signing process, we were also encouraged to verbally agree and were told that reading the contract in detail was not necessary, and that we should simply trust what was being said instead. We were also pressured into signing the contract. In hindsight, this made it difficult for us to fully understand the long-term cost structure at the time of signing. Had we fully understood the escalation in pricing, we would have evaluated the offer differently. After the sale was completed, the sales representative stopped responding to messages, which added to our frustration. For anyone considering solar, make sure every promise is documented in writing and take the time to carefully review the full contract before signing. After solar installation, first two months' electric bills were outrageous. When we contacted customer service they were rude and very unhelpful, even hanging up on my husband at one point. Finally discovered that they had not set battery back-up to be used by us at night--instead it was given back to PG&E at huge financial loss to us. They have taken no responsibility for this error. These guys swapped out my inverter. The tech left before completing the job blaming my wife for not knowing the Wifi password. So the tech just walked away without connecting to the internet for monitoring the system. He could have called me. They never came back and gave me crap about how it was working even though I could not monitor the system. I was promised a return. I tried to tell them I wanted to use the repeater that was originally installed but they refused to come back. I ended up setting up the system myself using wifi. The system works. My rating has not changed. This company is completely incompetent. My panels were installed in early October and are still not authorized for use by PG&E. While I understand the issues with inspections and how slow PG&E can be, Empower is by far the culprit in the 7 month delay (so far). First, they mis-scheduled the first inspection (first fail). Then they failed to notice that part of the project was a main power upgrade. (Second fail) Then they lost the paperwork - a neighbor found it and brought it back to my house. Next was the water spigot issue that was under where panel upgrade was to be installed-I was told by Empower employee to just cap it, have it inspected and then uncap it. I chose to proactively move the spigot away from that area, the cost of which was $1,600. Turns out that the entire water line can not be under the panel, so that was done for no reason. They talked me into a side-by-side panel system, which bypasses PG&E, but they did not fix the paperwork with the city (third fail). Fourth inspection finally passed and waiting for a permission to operate... If I could do this over again, I would definitely NOT have gone with Empower. read more

We had a problem with the gateway on the system due to us being forced to change our internet/Wi-Fi for spectrum. The problem was to get this gateway working again took about 4 weeks between calling Enphase with several calls with no resolution. Then we called Empower we called them once and it too awhile for them to follow up with Enphase to see what happened. Then I believe Empower went through chain of command of their own, then they sent out a Tech today 11/9/2023.The gentleman was very knowledgeable, pleasant and had the system going in about 30 minutes or so. Two people who work for California Renewable Energy impersonated California state workers and coerced me into signing a contract that violated California Solar Consumer Protection Guide. I reached out the the self-claimed California state worker to verify his credibility via Email and phone, to California Renewable Energy at (760) 282-4066 and to Empower Home via (800) 306-6953. No response from any of them has been received. Therefore, I reported the three parties involved in this matter to the Attorney General of California and Contractors' State License Board. All three parties involved in the fraud had connections to Utah. The two people who visited my property and claimed as California state workers and students of University of Utah. The owner of the business graduated from Utah State University. The californiarenewableenergy.org domain name was registered to an individual in Utah. The company that ran the credit check on me (Enium) was based in Utah. It is website domain is enium.com. The company's CSLB license lists multiple citations from the board. The company and its affiliate California Renewable Energy posted 500+ 5-star fake reviews on Google and I reported this matter to Google so that they could be taken down. I would not recommend this company to my worst enemy. I have called them to check my system and they say it works fine even though we pull from the grid. we have trees in front that shade the roof and they still put the panels there. I Called and the gal talks over me and won't listen to me. she said cut you tree, REALLY, that tree was there when they put the system up. we told them then that we were not happy with that. the guy said that if there is a problem when the tree get its leaves to call. ALL THE GAL SAYS IS TO READ OUR CONTRACT AND CUT THE TREE. Very poor service. We started with Vivint salesman and he ended us up here with this company. Run, run, very far away. It took almost 2 years to get my solar up and running on my house. I should have known to cancel my order when they scheduled my install and didn't even have my product in stock/the right warehouse. I was given the excuse that all installers had Covid at least 10 times during this process. And after my equipment was finally up and running, it stopped working. Their technician said it was because they didn't install the equipment properly. Then I was accused of tampering with the equipment and that's why it wasn't working by their VP Brad. I would never want anyone to go through the same headache and stress that I went through dealing with Empower Solar. read more

It took over a year to finish the job after they abandoned the job and told me to get an electrician to finish the job. They did extensive video and photo documentation pre-contract, so they knew what was there and I made them aware the 2008 installed shop electrical had no permit. They insisted the shop was the best install location. The first inspection was a disaster and had about 7 issues to be fixed. They apparently did not know that after installing solar next to skylights in a shop you need fall through protection installed. They didn't ground the subpanel on my shop, nor connect the main panel with the sub panel via a ground wire. I had to get all this done with another contractor. The other contractor called for the final inspection and got it completed. Then, EMP came knocking for the final payment threating to disconnect my solar if I didn't pay them immediately. I am trying to get them to cover the electrical cost after the County Inspector told me it was their "Baby" after they opened the panels. Emp took on the job and then decided not to finish the job for unknown reasons. It was terrible. read more

Dealing with Empower Solar and California Renewable Energy has been a comedy of errors and nothing less than the most frustrating thing I've ever had to deal with. Every single person in every single department that I dealt with completely and unapologetically ignored me. Never in my life have I dealt with a business who truly couldn't have cared less if they were providing customer service or the product that they were paid to. Every appointment that I had they would no show/no call and every time I emailed, text or called anyone, they refused to speak to me or call me back. In one instance, the Rep actually text me to say that he couldn't help me and wouldn't call me back. The installation was done by unskilled and untrained laborers. They ended up stepping on my ceiling and cracking it to pieces. Worst yet, it took many months, unanswered calls, three laborers and countless anxiety to actually get them to come fix it. The VP gave me his cell number and then wouldn't answer my calls or texts and wouldn't call me back. Save yourself the heartache and trouble and don't use this company! read more

Horrible company! My husband and I have been through such an awful experience with these people. We started the process back in June had the panels put on in July, it is now January and it is still not up and running the panels are literally just sitting on our roof. The panels were put on incorrectly and has caused damage to our roof. On top of that every time there employees come to our home they never finish the job they're sent out to do and they do horrible work, extremely inexperienced. To top it all off we had rain back in December and it caused some severe water damage to our home, they refuse to fix the damages properly and the rain is going to continue so you can imagine the anxiety that this has caused us. We were told by the sales rep we wouldn't have to pay a dime until the solar was actually up and running and they started charging us back in October. Unfortunately, our experience with Empower was incredibly disappointing and frustrating. Our panels were installed November of 2020 and not correctly turned on until July 2021. That's correct, our solar panels sat on our roof for nearly 8 months, while we paid for both the panels and a growing true-up with PG&E. Turns out at installation, the system was not properly "commissioned" causing the panels to work but not actual send power back to the grid. When I first noticed, I was told by my rep that this is normal because the panels were installed during the winter months and we were likely using more than we were producing. But as that true-up grew to over $3,000 in the spring, I knew something definitely wasn't right. They sent out a technician and he quickly identified that the system setup simply hadn't been completed. Perhaps the most frustrating part of all this was the lack of concern and apathy that we received from Empower. There was zero remorse from the management team (we spoke to Chad Vogel) for the fact that they completely fumbled our install. The management team avoided my calls and emails as I attempted to get some resolution on this. I paid over $2,000 towards my solar financing over the eight months while accumulating over $3,500 on my true-up for the panels uselessly sitting on my roof. I recently received a check from them, which I do appreciate but hardly makes a dent in the cost I've incurred due to the companies incompetence. read more

The lack of communication with the client and no follow through is just awful. First they don't do the best placement for the panels, so I had them plan a different location before signing off on the plan. We got the city permit in less than 2 weeks. Then they scheduled instillation. They never showed up. I had to reach out to them about this. They came a few days later and installed. I had not received any information after a week so I reached out again. I was told 7-10 business days for the inspection. It has been 23 business days since the install and I still have no other information. I reach out the the account manager at least once a week for an update. She doesn't respond except to give excuses as to why it is taking so long. I have asked to speak with a supervisor, and nobody contacted me. I asked for a copy of the contract as I want to see if there is a way to get out of it. It wasn't sent to me. At least not until today AFTER I sent an email stating I filed a complaint against the company with the BBB. Did I mention that they have also sent me over the document to sign stating they completed the job. Mind you the panels are installed, but the box is empty, no inspection has been done, and they have not contacted the power company to get it activated. By signing that paper, I would be saying they did everything and they would get paid although I cannot possibly use the panels. Can you believe that?! As Chuck N stated, the person who came to my house posed as a worker from the power company when he first spoke to me. He did have the "Empower" logo on him the second time we met. I do not trust this company to follow through with anything. It concerns me that they will not fulfill obligations to replace broken panels and whatnot in the future despite having a warranty. I cannot state this enough, do NOT do business with this company! read more
