I haven't had carpet installed yet, but based on the salesman I wouldn't recommend these guys. Basically the guy scribbled down everything on a piece of paper which we wouldn't let us see, (we asked for several rooms to be done) then getting him to break it out into the quote into per room pieces was like pulling teeth. Finally, after telling him we wanted to wait a week to consider his price, he gave us the old, "if you don't make your decision now, I lose my commission nonsense" (probably all BS). In the end I did go with Empire, because my wife really wanted the work done, but I wouldn't go with them EVER again. Bottom line, if you don't like high pressure sales guys who don't want to tell you details on what you are paying (cost per square foot) cost broken out by room, and give you the old here's the deal, take it or leave it nonsense. don't deal with Empire. read more

I was very skeptical of Empire Carpet because I could not find a good review online. They were giving me a very good price so decided to go with them despite the bad reviews because the price was so compelling. I must say they far exceeded my expectations. After having read reviews about unhappy customers who complained the carpet they got was different from the samples - I contacted Empire to express my concerns and they had someone send me the sample carpet I had agreed to purchase weeks before my install so I could verify the carpet I got was exactly like the carpet that the sales person showed me. On the day of the install the carpet was exactly what I had ordered. The installers were great and did a fantastic job. I am very happy I went with Empire and I think the number of online negative reviews relative to positive reviews is misleading because for me they certainly did a good job. Based on my experience I would very happily recommend Empire to family and friends. If you have concerns contact them - they did a great job alleviating my concerns and answering my questions and in the end I am a very very satisfied customer. read more

The worst experience I have ever had with a business!! Completely unprofessional! They canceled my appointment twice after I waited hours for them to come. The first salesperson said she wasn't prepared and couldn't find parking. Ridiculous! A few days later, the second salesperson was extremely rude and said she was "too busy at a 6000sq ft job and had to reschedule". I called customer service and they sounded like could care less. I couldn't have been happier with our experience with Empire. My sister had a flooring job done, and recommended them to me. Our representative, Michael Della Pia, was very helpful and professional. He gave us the lowest price right off the bat, which my wife and I appreciated. He took his time explaining our options, and walked us through the financing. We had three bedrooms and a hallway installed with laminate flooring, and a stairway carpeted. Our installers, Sergio and Kevin, were very polite and professional. They moved our furniture, ripped up the old carpet, put the flooring down and installed the carpeting. They both put in a full days work. They arrived at 8am and left at 8pm. I don't think they even took a break for lunch! They moved all the furniture back and cleaned up the work area perfectly. The best part about the whole experience was how easy it was from start to finish. I am very happy with my experience with Empire and would recommend them highly. read more

We are very disappointed with Empire today service, the carpet they installed in our house only one year old, but it look like 10 years old, threads are come out, when we complained, asked about our warranty, they give million reasons. I don't recommend this company. I had a sales person come to my home for a estimate on wood flooring for two small rooms in mid October. We decided on the right color and went with it. We then picked a install date for December 2nd to gives us enough time to paint the rooms and clear the rooms for the install guys. On December 2nd early morning we get a call telling us that they can't do it because they were moving from one warehouse to another. They told us they will call us back the same say and never did. I had to call then then next day and find out what was going on. No one on the phone could help me. The next day I get the call and they rescheduled for December 12th and guess what? We got another call that morning this time they said they don't have the wood in stock. This company is the worst. I now have to cancel and find another place that will do the work for me. I first became a customer of Empire Today in 2006 when I viewed one of their TV advertisements. At the time I was looking to install laminated flooring in my foyer and kitchen. Fortunately, they sent me the perfect sales representative, Scott Nazarous, Sales Rep AP-5. When the installers came, they were just as courteous and knowledgeable. They did a perfect installation, cleaned up everything and just like the advertisement, you never even knew they were there except for the beautiful new flooring which was now a part of your home. Since this time, I have had carpeting installed in our home office, in our TV room, in my tenant's dining room, living room and two bedrooms and recently for front and back hallways. Every time I have made an appointment with Empire Today, I have always requested that I only wanted Scott Nazarous to be the sales representative that would service my account. In every single purchase, Scott has always demonstrated the same quality of salesmanship in each of my transactions with Empire Today. Scott would always suggest what was best and most appropriate for my needs. I have complete confidence in Scott as he has always exceeded my expectations. Complete garbage. This place took a week to finish a one day flooring job. The sales rep didn't inform us of subflooring we would need. That was an unexpected cost, my railings were down for the whole week posing a danger to my two small kids. The stairs we were promised didn't match the floors and they wanted to discount $200 from the total cost to make up for it. $200 to make up for that kind of job. I am disappointed in the customer service and lack of response to a very disappointed returning customer. I purchased carpet for 3 bedrooms, 1 hallway landing and a set of stairs. A pretty big job. The scheduling department made my install for the afternoon and the installer would have to work late so they made a lame excuse, saying they incorrectly measured and would only be able to do the stairs but they had to charge me the full installation price before they could install just the stairs. If it were really true that they didn't have enough carpet for all 3 bedrooms, why not install 2 bedrooms and the stairs. Instead of trying to do whatever they could to make the situation bearable they did nothing. The installers never called and never showed. So here I sit until 6pm because they could "still" show up. Sales rep came out on Saturday to measure our (small) family room. We ordered a carpet & paid a premium for the convenience of shopping at home and receiving installation next day (Monday, as they don't install on Sundays). Because the floor was not level, we had to pay a handyman to come out on Sunday to level the floor (Empire doesn't do that). After all of this, the installers were a no-show! When I called for more information, I spent countless hours on the phone (yes - hours!) only to be told that my salesperson put 9/11/11 as the install date in the computer, instead of 7/11/11. The best part is that no one really cared or even bothered to apologize! They just kept putting me on hold and telling me that they'd have someone call me back. I've since canceled the order and ordered a similar carpet from a local merchant for less than half the price!! Yes - I had to go into the carpet showroom with my two children (not fun) and yes, I have to wait a week for install, but it's worth it for the cost savings and the convenience of having the installers show up on time. read more

Even though I'm giving them 1 star I gotta say I almost look back fondly to my experience with their clown of a salesman. So here's how it went down. Just bought a house and we were like 2 weeks from moving and knew we wanted to carpet a couple rooms so my buddy urged me to schedule an appointment. I did. Salesdude was scheduled for, let's call it between 6-8 pm. He showed closer to 9. Strike 1 (compounded by the fact we were hanging around waiting in a house with no furniture). He comes in hot talking up some $4-6/SF carpet. We asked him to show us the $2-3 jawns. He begrudgingly obliged. We picked one out. He quoted us a price. We tried negotiating. He called his boss. Ok so I know what your thinking, seems like a pretty standard ordeal right? Well that's when things got interesting. His boss realized he quoted us a price that was like 20% cheaper than it was supposed to. They settled on "honoring" the quoted price except they would add sales tax which was originally included. In other words they would raise my price 7%. They weren't honoring anything. After some back and forth I told him to leave his card, that i'd like to sleep on it and review my options. He said sorry dude that's not how it works if you agree and put a deposit down now we'll install it in 24 hours but if not you'll have to call the office and set up another appointment. I said no how bout you just go ahead and leave your card and I'll call you if we decide to get the carpet. He then packed up his shit and stormed out. He was pissed. I found amusement in it. DO NOT use this Empire located in Hackensack! A few months back we got an estimate for laminate flooring for our kitchen and carpet for our family room. Kitchen was done first and family room was done a few weeks later. About a week after family room was complete we were moving some items up from our basement back into family room. We noticed some things seem to have been disturbed and a collectible item was missing! Since the installers were the only strangers in the house recently, I had a bad feeling and went to our bedroom and checked my jewelry box. Sure enough I had jewelry missing and checked my bottom night table drawer and more jewelry missing!! To make a long story short and not bore you with the details about what legal actions were taken, I would advise anyone considering Empire not to use them. They subcontract their installation to companys who probably don't even know what kind of people they have working for them. They probably don't care either. read more

If I could give less than zero stars I would!! Empire came over and quoted me a price to match the one I had received at home depot. I agreed to have Empire do the work. The next day the workers came over and told me my floor wash't leveled and it would be an extra $400! Customer service would not work with me so I had to cancel the order. I had an expert carpenter come over that day with a level and proved that my floor was PERFECTLY leveled. These workers didn't even come with a level. I feel I was completely scammed because I am a woman. Then they gave me a hard time when I wanted my $350 deposit back. I had to call back a few times! The prices at this place are insane! They came to install the laminate flooring we ordered and it wasn't not what we wanted . Our salesperson was not available to help us customer service had me on hold for 52 minutes and the installer left after waiting for 15 minutes . Wish I never heard of them - purchased wood laminate flooring in Sept - salesperson came to my house - showed me samples - I was concerned about scratching as I was installing it in my kitchen - the sales rep took out a key and ran it over the sample showing that that it wouldn't scratch - "it will be perfect for high traffic areas" - unfortunately, my husband had some health issues and now walks with a walker - my floor is scratched from his walker wheels - I called customer service and they said it was scratch resistant not scratch proof - I would have to replace at my own expense - to me this is fraud - will NEVER use them again - they don't stand behind their product - read more

Empire did a job for me about 10 years ago in Freeport, New York the job came out ok and I was going give them another oppportunity am a real estate investor based in New Jersey. I have a residential house in Sussex county,NJ So the rep they sent came 1/2 hour late because she got lost. Then I walked her through the project and she wanted to know if I wanted financing I told her no we were going pay outright. Then she gave us a quote for $7800. This is not my first rodeo I had other quotes already from other companies and I had I was comparing "apples for apples" I told her " she was "way off" on her pricing she comes back with $5500 I I told her we had a quote for $3000.00. Then she gives me the story "oh she is working this job as a second job and who's going to pay for her gas? Wait a minute, you want me to pay for your gas to come out to give me a price? Then she tells me she'll give ten minutes to decide what we are going to do. So while she's waiting I called the other vendor and gave him the order. She came back and we told her no thank you. and she was still trying to tell us her product and service was better. Cmon I'm not that stupid! Update so about a week later I get a call from the call center asking me how everything went I told them well it seems that you didn't talk to your rep ( Maybe she didn't have gas to make it back to their office? Lol) I told them about her rude behavior etc they offered to send another rep over I told them "Thanks but no thanks on this project!" Think twice before calling these guys! read more

We called for an estimate from Empire and the rep, Jay, arrived right on time. He was very pleasant and spent a good 45 minutes with us going over the products they have to offer. He gave us an estimate, but we didn't want to commit right on the spot, so he gave us his cell phone number for us to call him. Well, I called a few days later and left a message. No response. My husband called a few days after that on a Sunday and spoke to him. He said he wouldn't be able to schedule an install anytime that week (this is after he told us they are known for doing installations next day). He said he would call us during the week to set something up. He never did. I guess he doesn't want our business. Very strange. UPDATE: Perhaps I should be thankful that the rep never called me back. I went with another company and they charged me $876.30 for what Empire quoted me $2554 for. So not only does Empire not call you back, but they rip you off. Nice! read more

I installed carpet in my basement from this company in 2013. The reason I chose them over Home Depot was that they installed capet the next day or so they say. Well the guys showed up with the carpet day later than scheduled with uncut carpet and complained that since it was raining yesterday they couldn't cut the carpet outdoors. The installed the carpet which is now unravelling and also bunching up from the edges. During installation they told me that the door in the basement was low and needs to be cut from the bottom to move freely. I told them it was ok to do so. They damaged it by using the wrong saw. Then they said they will replace it with another door but now I have to cut it myself. Excellent! here I was trying to finish the basement job after an emergency surgery and now these guys added more work for me as my contractor had already left the job site. I will not choose them again for 1) poor quality of carpet 2) Bad installation 3) unskilled labor not trained to finish the job appropriately. read more

Worst company and most expensive. Horrible is an under statement to describe my experience with them. 1. I chose a carpet, 2 days later they came , installed the padding than showed me the carpet. It's the wrong carpet. 2. Salesman told me that they will have the right carpet the next day. Installer called me the next day and told me it's still the wrong carpet. I told him install it anyways because I need it finish for the new tenants moving in 2 days. The installer refused to install it and gave me an attitude. 3. I called customer service and their service is soooo bad that no one got back to me until 3 days later. I think they were ignoring me on purpose. So when finally someone got in touch with me I threaten to sue for unfinish work and guess what....that's when they started to make things happen. 4. When they finally installed the carpet, the installer didn't thouroughly vacuum and i almost got punctured with a loose nail. I inspected the carpet. Which was dirty with carpet strands I found about a couple more loose nails. Never again. This company has turned into garbage and the price is expensive. read more

I had carpet installed in my Phila., PA property. Over $3500 for 4 rooms, a hall & a stairway. The installers spoke no English and did a terrible job. There are multiple seams, some highly visible, in every room (rooms less than 12' wide). I put in a complaint #P210619, and was told they would send someone other than the installers, but the same installers were sent out and didn't understand a word I was saying. I complained again and asked for Empire to send someone that speaks English that I can communicate the issues with and was told by Empire Representative, Christine Collins, that can't be guaranteed. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was connected to a voicemail and was never contacted again after leaving a message. There is a large pizza shaped seam in the hallway and double seams in doorways and seams in every room. I have yet to be told why there are so many seams or offered to have carpet replaced or to receive a reimbursement. Your customer service is terrible!!! I will be spreading the word Not to use Empire. read more

We ordered flooring for our 2 bathrooms, 2 bedrooms, livingroom, diningroom, and hallway in 11/11. The installs went fine and were very efficient. Since then, though, Empire has had to come out and fix all three types of flooring. The grouting in the bathrooms PVT was cracking, the carpet was bunching, and now the laminate under the couch is warping at the seems. They were supposed to come out on 8/6 to inspect the flooring. We called to reschedule do to a family emergency. They were supposed to call and give us a time frame for Friday, 8/10 and never did. When I called on Friday, we had not been scheduled. We rescheduled to be the 1st appointment today, 8/16 and at 10:45 I got a call that the inspector couldn't be here until 1:30 or 2 (at the earliest!). Needless to say, we're now rescheduled for Friday as the first appointment and I'll believe it when I see the inspector in my house! We will never use or recommend EMPIRE to anyone again! Update: Someone did come out on Friday, as promised and they will be fixing the floors this week. However, the aggrevation this has caused is not worth using EMPIRE again! read more

The Empire sales manager called me back within 2 hours after a bad experience that I blogged about here on yelp. Apparently they have people that look at the reviews across the major internet sites. It did feel pretty awesome to blog about something somewhere on the internet and have the company respond literally within 2 hours of my post. They sent out another salesman the next day. He gave me quotes for both a small 82sqft room carpet on the second floor and then the first floor including stairs for hardwood flooring. It took him a couple hours to measure every room on the first floor, but he was thorough. I explained to him I wasn't going to have this first floor done for a few months, but that I wanted a quote so I could create a budget. He understood he wasn't getting the commission from the hardwood sale until it was completed a few months out and proceeded without hesitation to measure and calculate for 2 hours straight. That's another thing, it does take the salesperson quite a while to do various calculations especially if you want prices on multiple flooring options, hardwood, laminate, and/or combination, and the salespeople do all this without any hourly wage or salary, so I can imagine many of them are on guard not to waste half a day with people that aren't buying. Moral of the story is Empire Carpet enlists sales reps to do their selling, and with sales reps you might get a bad apple, or a greedy salesperson, but apparently the company itself having been around since 1959 has grown their business based on standards they keep despite having some ineffective salespeople in their ranks. You can call Empire and if you don't like the salesperson just call the corporate office and have them send one of their more successful salespeople out that aren't so desperate to make a sale that they end up blowing opportunities to make sales. The second salesman's number, Jerry Matisak, is 973-299-0615. You won't regret calling him, you might not even have to call empire by just dealing with him. I got the 82sqft room done the next morning for $200 plus $14 tax, it looks beautiful and was done in 30 minutes flat. Not giving 5 stars here only because the previous experience did suck and ultimately calling a carpet company shouldn't require you to be prepared to call again for another sales rep. I'll leave the original post which had one star below for reference. But again, the company will take care of you if you do have a bad experience, especially if you voice your opinion. Nothing gets done if you don't say anything. If everything had gone well originally I probably wouldn't have blogged about it, so there are probably many more fully satisfied customers out there than dissatisfied, and ultimately the company would have gone out of business a long time ago if that hadn't been the case. She looks at me like who is this joker. I felt like I should've changed into my tuxedo before letting her in. I tell her I'm doing the whole townhouse in a few months and want hardwood then, but now I just want the one room. She dismisses my request for a quote on the hardwood for the house and says just show me the room you want us to do tomorrow. She doesn't even come in the room, just stands outside and says $500 minimum. I tell her the phone rep didn't tell me $500 minimum, I was thinking $200 budget for a small den; she didn't even apologize for the customer service agent wasting our time today. Then we walked back downstairs and I asked her again for a ballpark on the hardwood. It was clear she wasn't going to show me any samples for hardwood either because I wasn't doing it tomorrow. She just eyeballed the place and said $4,000 for carpet, $8,000 for hardwood," and added, "you should probably wait until the hardwood is on sale." I understand salespeople shouldn't waste time one customers that aren't giving them a sale, but if you are rude enough about it then the customer will nix the entire company for life." read more

We ordered extensive carpeting and flooring, from the Hackensack Empire Today, a couple of weeks before needing it installed. In the ensuing time, we took time off work and incurred the expense of getting a handyman, in to make certain everything was to the sales person's specifications. They confirmed the installation date on our call to them, three days prior. We were told that the installers were expected to be there at 8 AM, but if we don't see them by 10:30 we should call to check the revised time. The day before the scheduled install, we again took time off work, unpacked every item from the furniture, moved everything out that we could move ourselves and disconnected all electronics. There was no place to move, what with all the repositioned furniture, and not even a TV to watch all the Empire Today commercials promising you excellent service.. Guess what? At 9:40 on the morning of the installation we get a call saying that they had overbooked for that day and couldn't make it. Obviously, they had to know this before the morning of the install and could have called earlier. They just didn't care. If you live in New Jersey, please note that Empire must notify you in writing if they can't make an installation date. The customer has the option of accepting a revised date, or (our option) canceling the order with a full refund of any deposits. Good luck. read more

Well after quite a bit of talking with Empire corporate we worked something out and they have just finished installing the carpet. I could not be anymore impressed, absolutely f'ing amazing job. It is completely even, perfect installation, I could go on and on. Was I pissed they never showed up the first time? Yes. Am I glad I stuck it out? Uh yeah you can say that. This company has those ads that make everyone involved in this whacked organization look like it's super structured with guys all wearing the same crisp grey shirts as they install your flooring!! Ha! They are the biggest bunch of frauds I have EVER encountered. They sent a sales person to our house. Excellent in bs'ing by the way. We picked our wood flooring and set an installation date. My husband and I had to remove everything out of our 1st floor ( 5 rooms) Day of installation the doorbell rings and there stood 2 guys that looked like they were left overs from the gang who couldn't shoot straight. They took a look at the size of the job and made a lame excuse why THEY couldn't install that day. Made a new install date and from that moment on it became a joke! Our sales person completely stopped calling us to give us updates and to answer any and all our questions. Text messages went unanswered. Had no idea why we were being blown off! I refused to play their cat and mouse game. Found a wonderful local company we should have gone with from the very beginning and had wonderful results and cheaper too!! Even more bad business from empire. Just had a call from a regional manager Tim Sherwin..As slick a talker as their sales personnel. They are willing to correct your issues on their terms. Ie: won't remove furniture from room now to install the carpet Contract states they will remove!! Another breach!!!...sign waivers that favors them etc. Empire is crooked as can be. I urge you all...Contact the BBB in Chicago where their home office is located....you may not think it goes without results but it does....I also urge you...post a review here on Yelp.com. Empire monitors that and even tries to sugar coat the response but yelp and social media are powerful tools people. read more

From the get go, I think their whole sales approach is pretty scammy: the "sales rep" came, measured, gave me a price, refused to put it in writing so I can remember later, he told me "to write it down", I told him if he did not put it in writing, he could go. He then offered me a lower price if I said yes right there, again, refusing to put it in writing. I said, "no thank you, I am talking to other people and need to compare and make a decision". Couple of days later, they call me to tell me "I might be elegible for additional discounts", again asked them to put it writing, and they refused, offering to send the rep back to my house to "discuss". I am sorry but any company or contractor who refuses to give me a written quote doesn't deserve my trust. In my opinion, you have to be really stupid to go with this company and what I believe to be its scammy, annoying sales tactics since there is nothing they offer to guarantee that what you get is what you were sold. read more

Horrible. I set up a consultation for my mother. The salesperson was punctual, however clearly could not do simple math. She measured the rooms, and offered us two deals. The "$99 per room" and the upcoming "60% off" promo. I asked if because it was upcoming, would we be eligible this week? She didn't know..ummm whyyyy bring it up then?! Well for 3 rooms at the $99 per room, the cost came out to well over $2000. If the carpet itself is only $300, how much is labor?! Then she told us the prices for the 60% off. She said originally, it's 6 thousand something, but with the promo it's 4 thousand something. I said excuse me, 50% is half so it should be under $3000.."oh your right I'm sorry" and she punched more numbers into her blackberry (can you get your people calculators?) ..anyways, before we finalized anything we had her leave, and she said she'd email us the breakdown of what costs what, like how much for labor, and she never did. Also my CARPENTER stepfather measured the rooms that night, and she was off by over a hundred feet! Either she was incompetent, or this was a big SCAM to raise our costs. I wanted to take advantage of those wonderful offers they run on TV. Buy one room and get 2 free!! Wow, how could you go wrong? It's more like how could you go right? I booked the appointment for the salesman to come out to my home. It was for a Tuesday night between 7-9. Well, after sitting and waiting patiently no one showed up. Not even so much as a phone call. So the next day I call the 800 phone number to voice my displeasure. the customer service was polite and understanding but clearly reading from a script that I am SURE they have read from 100's of times before. To make the offer even more enticing, she offered to rebook the appointment AND offer me $250 off my purchase. Naturally I agreed and set up another appointment for the following Tuesday in the same 7-9pm slot. So we ate early, cleaned up, bathe the kids and put them to bed in anticipation of the Empire Today salesman arriving. Care to guess what happened? That's right, no show for a SECOND time and no phone call either. So I called the 800 phone line and once again voiced my displeasure to the sales rep, who apologized profusely and said she would have a district manager contact me directly within 2 days. They even gave me a reference #. Well after waiting TEN days and still not getting a call from them, we decided why be a glutton for punishment and chose to not give them our business. Only after my wife wrote a review on Angie's list and on their facebook page is when they finally got back to us. They promised to rectify everything and give them one more chance, but after reading the reviews from the people that DID hire them, we told them we weren't interested.
