Random cut of carpet covering damage to the floor
Rachel H.

Review of Empire Today / Luna Carpet Services: I originally booked with Empire Today, but they told me they were too busy and passed my project off to their "sister company," Luna, without much explanation. I went along with it, and we scheduled carpet replacement for our staircase -- about 26 steps total. They told me the job would be done in three stages: one day for installation, one for binding, and one for a final check. No specific time slot was given, and instead, I was woken up at 7:00 AM by a call from the installer saying he was already in my driveway. He came in, did only six of the 26 stairs, then abruptly said he was finished and left -- leaving a large, uncut piece of carpet on the bottom floor. When I moved the carpet, I discovered a hole in the floor that had been covered up. I immediately tried to contact Luna, but was told I'd have to wait "24 business hours" -- which somehow means three days -- to get any response. No one answers their phone, and even Empire can't get through to Luna when they try on my behalf. It's been over 24 hours, and I still have a hole in my floor and only a quarter of the job completed. I even texted the installer directly to ask what happened with the stairs. He replied saying he didn't do it. I then told him I was just going to call Luna, and only then did he reply saying he would come back to fix it -- but I haven't seen him since. Empire has been no help, and Luna seems totally unreachable. At this point, I feel completely scammed. I want a full refund. This experience has been frustrating, unprofessional, and unacceptable.

Expect your floor to be uneven.

I hired Empire Today to retile my kitchen. Their workmanship was very poor and they left the room a mess. Given how expensive they were, I expected to get a much better level of service.

Look at the difference in levels!

I don't even want to leave a star. They messed up my floor bad! Left a support post with nothing under it and covered the gap with trim! Just look at the picture! Need to say I've filed a dispute with my credit card over this!

Ileana came out within two days and advised that the floors could go with a "buff and recoat" saving half the cost of a full sand and refinish... very honest! The former owners had given me some mixed messages on what they had cleaned the floors with, so I was concerned about the buff and recoat working and expressed this to Ileana. She was always really prompt with emailing and calling me back... and I was annoying. She and Jose personally came out to our house on their day off to do a sample spot to make sure everything would work - excellent customer service! We proceeded with the job and the work was done quickly and they did such a lovely job. Ileana is a "master colorist" and was even able to fill in some stain to worn areas of our floors and they look brand new. My husband and I literally cannot stop gushing about how amazing our floors look. And the best part is not only are our floors gorgeous, but VA Top Floors was such a pleasure to deal with through the entire process - no games or flakiness, unlike pretty much every other vendor out there. I completely trusted them in my home. Highly recommend!!

It was a no brainer to choose them. When it comes to the work itself, the craftsmanship was very good, the cuts are so clean and everything looks amazing. They did very fast work without sacrificing quality. The only areas for improvement I would say they could have are: - Communication during the days of the project, so you know without having to ask when they are coming, leaving, what the progress is, etc. - Ensuring when they put furniture and things back that they pay attention to things like hooking up HDMIs back to the correct places - Doing a better job of cleanup -- they left behind a TON of dust coating everything, sawdust in my basement that I presume blew in from leaving the garage entrance open where they were working, cans/water bottles left behind - Building in measurement/space for lower flooring to not leave a gap in the trim; they came back and did some caulking after I had a water/rain issue, but it still doesn't look as good -- I wish that their molding/trim solution filled the big gaps and I'm going to have to find a way to do that myself To their credit, they were very fast and responsive when I had a water issue and came back out the next day. I also had a crack in my basement ceiling where something pounded through or pounded the drywall loose from the flooring above being done, and they credited me enough money back to be able to have my handyman fix it. Overall, I would definitely use DFD again.

Michael Collins was able to allay fears and suspicions concerning previous contractors' price quotations for the work that needed to be accomplished. Mike was courteous, passionate and prompt in his correspondence and manner during the estimate meeting, and then a week later for the installation. The previous unit was under-powered and used the older coolant (with a significant leak), so a new internal and external unit was necessary. For the estimate meeting, Mike came by with a physical notebook containing up-to-date information for pricing of the "common" units that are going to be sold by the competition, along with what should be "proper" pricing (this same information was discovered with a bit of searching the web for this area). One rather important "pricing item" that was explained has to deal with financing and making sure that when discussing pricing for the estimate that the "financing fees of 8% to 14%" are not included unless necessary; this was in discussing the previous estimates I was given from other companies in the area, wherein the costs were inflated relative to the online searches I ran previously. Of note, the piping, circuit, and electrical cabling replacement estimates from MJA Design were far more reasonable than the previous three other HVAC contractor companies. For MJA Design, there is a 3% charge if credit card(s) are used for payment. Mike listened to my requirements for a replacement system and gave me three different options for systems (one of the options was for a similar smaller Heat Pump system as his competition and the other two were for significantly improved systems). In my case, I went with an Amana (modular) Heat Inverter system and will go through MJA to install the other modules over time. This was a major upgrade in the quality of the equipment that would be installed the following Friday (six days later). In other words, using the dollar amounts of the previous three HVAC companies, I was able to get a significantly more efficient system that was .5 tons larger than the system quoted by the other three (all of which were highly rated on Angie's List and Yelp) and a bit more local for my location. Suggestion: If you live in a place with limited parking, do your best to make sure that they have 2 parking spaces that are close to the installation site. This will greatly assist the installers. In my case, Mike and his co-worker, Favian (sp?) arrived on-time (0900), workload/duties split, and talked between themselves when issues arose with the external unit. They were efficient, very passionate, quite approachable. To their mutual credit, they had read their customer correctly, and gave explanations that were easily understood and retained. (To my credit, I managed to stay out of their respective way.) My previous York units were installed on the cheap, with 1/4" copper piping, and multiple internal feeds and a lack of drainage pans. The old York external unit was mounted directly to a concrete block, and had free cabling and piping. The new piping and electrical cabling was very tidy, mounting blocks and rizers were used for the new external unit, cabling and copper pipes were run extremely neatly. The internal unit has more redundancies and has been reduced down to a single feed rather than the previous two. Drainage piping no longer obstructs the new filter. To say that the new units are cleaner and reduced the internal footprint (the external unit is significantly larger than the previous one) is an understatement. Unfortunately for them, the install was not a typical, and they ran into troubles with the original external unit (where it would not recognize the thermostat and internal unit). I was honestly expecting them (this is due to previous experiences of friends and family) to have them come back the following day. This was not the case, they came back after a break for dinner, removing and replacing the faulty Amana external unit and getting everything up and running by 2330 with a replacement. This was to make sure that I would be able to sleep in a less muggy environment than what I had been experiencing during the week with my old HVAC system being down. Both Favian (sp?) and Mike made sure that all was well before leaving for the night, providing advice on the new system (no schedules!) and switching from auto fan to circulate. The following morning, I was quite comfortable with my townhome being more even in temperature 68.7F @ 40% humidity in the basement, 69.3F @ 40% humidity in the middle levels, and 70.2F @ 40% humidity. Mike sent a few text messages to make sure that everything was working well with the new units, I was comfortable, and happy with the new HVAC system, and thermostat.

I have used MJA for both AC and flooring. I couldn't be happier! They continuously exceed…read moreexpectations and I trust them completely with my home.
