Okay, this truck has a somewhat sketchy location on route 35 in Woodbridge but trust me, the food is amazing. The empanadas are generously proportioned, and there are a variety of flavors. I recommend the chicken and the beef. They have a dessert empanada with guava jam and cheese. It's very sweet do be prepared for that. Otherwise, all the empanadas are available for $3. They also offer mini empanadas if you want to sample.

    Corn tamale and veggie empanada

3.5 stars overall - Today was my first time ordering and the experience was pretty good. I ordered one bacon/potato/cheddar and one veggie empanada, along with a corn tamale at $3.25 each. The empanada crusts are perfectly crunchi-fried! B My burning But I had an issue with the low seasoning level and over-mushed consistency of the veggie empanada. But I still enjoyed the flavors very much. The bacon in the BPC empanada was chewy-like in a couple bites but again the empanada as a whole tasted good. The corn tamale tasted fresh and was a good way to top off my appetite (get full), although it seemed a bit dry to my liking. I never had a corn tamale before today so I'm not sure if they are typically dry. I'd probably visit again to try the yuca frittes which were on the menu today but not in stock. I'd also like to try the lobster empanada - when I am feelin' froggy enough to splurge $6.50 for one empanada.

Eh, I've had better for a cheaper price. Now, I'm not knocking this food truck because it's decent but I've just had so much better empanadas for $1 rather than $3 haha! But one thing I liked was how friendly the Empanada Guy at truck #4 "La Gordita". I had the chicken and beef empanada. The dough used to make these empanadas were really good -- so crispy! I have to say I def enjoyed the chicken better than the beef.

So far I've had him twice both for the chicken empanada.. I was a bit disappointed the second time that the flavor was not the same. Consistency with a product is key.. First time the chicken empanada was like chicken stew (pollo gisado) inside yummy.. The second time it tastes like mushed up chicken in an empanada and a bit dry.. I was brining my family to taste it on the second tasting and I disappointed them.. :/ first time I had him was on the beach in sandy hook during the afternoon and the other time was in port reading at 430pm end of day not sure if location and time played a roll in it at all... Good luck stay consistent and I will at least try him for a 3rd time in port reading again and maybe get a beef and a chicken to see the difference. Everyone has to try the hype at least once the man is at least trying to make himself known..

Finally!!!!! Caught them in Lyndhurst at a festival and was super happy to order. I got myself a lobster empanada and OMG it was delicious! Not greasy and fried to perfection. The filling was just enough and with lots of flavor! Enjoyed every bite! I got a bite of my husband's Mexican chorizo empanada and it was delicious too!!! I would definitely come back to him!! So worth the calories heehee!!! Also my lobster empanada was $7 - so worth it for me!!!

Empanada Guy Food Truck at Earth Day at the Liberty State Park.

Visited the Empanada Guy Food Truck during the HCIA Earth Day Celebrations at Liberty State Park in Jersey City. The staff inside the truck were really nice and glad they told me the Potato Balls had meat inside before placing the order! I ended up getting the Cheese Empanada ($4) and the Samosa Empanada ($4). The Samosa Empanada was the bomb, especially with the spicy Salsa Verde sauce. It wasn't too spicy but had a good array of spices, vegetables and was very tasty. The Cheese Empanada on the other hand was subpar, while not bad it just seemed like chewy unmelted cheese that just didn't hit the spot. Generally, thought the empanadas were good but nothing really special. Probably would get the Samosa Empanada again if I ever was near the vicinity of Empanada Guy Truck, but definitely not going to go out of my way for it.

    Overcooked and burnt maduros plantains
    Dayna M.

I have visited this location frequently and never had any issues before today. I order 3 empanadas, maduros plantains, a churro and cherry coke. I understood the 10 minute wait and had no problem as I know they have to prepare some of the items whenever it is ordered. My food came out in 10 mins and the server almost forgot my drink until I reminded him. When I got back to my office the cheese in one of the empanadas leaked out, the maduros were overcooked and burnt on the edges and the kicker was my churro was plain no cinnamon sugar just plain. I'm unsure if it was an off day but I will not be visiting this food truck again.

To preface, I'm not much of an empanada connoisseur, however, the empanadas I had met my expectations and I enjoyed them. I came out of interest of the spectacle that is the bright red food truck with neon lights and a Spanish man on it. I've passed it several times and having had an apple empanada from Taco Bell and some empanadas from a Spanish bakery I decided to give this a try. The truck was located in a lot by some electric lines and apartments - nice. I parked my car and took a gander at the menu. Most of the empanadas are $3, besides the crab and lobster empanadas ($6). I decided on getting chicken, beef, and apple - it came out to $9.62. The order for my beef and chicken empanada came out quick but was disappointed as they were out of apples for the apple empanada. The head dude there said he'd give me any two I wanted in place of the apple empanada so I chose crab and cheese. The chicken and crab filling was a bit bland. I'm surprised for $6 for the crab that'd be the case. Nevertheless the pastry itself made up for it, especially since the latter two was made fresh - scrumptious! The cheese one I would compare to a glorified mozzarella stick (can't go wrong with that!). The beef one was the best, savory and tasteful. In conclusion, I personally enjoyed this place as it met what I came to expect. I would've liked a sitting area perhaps and an apple empanada, but I'll definitely come around again to try it out!

    Beef empanada...another mushy one...yuck

I love Empanada Guy but today for the first time since they opened I had bad empanadas. I ordered 2 beef and a chicken. While the flavor was what I expect, the consistency and texture of the filling for the chicken and beef empanadas was completely off! Both fillings were of a bean-like consistency, not the usual consistency of chicken or beef which usually has chunks. It was almost like the fillings were mashed or put into a food processor. Maybe the weird looking guy working today didn't know what he was doing?! I hope this was just a one off

There is a bit of a local buzz about this truck because they are going to be on a Lifetime Show to get their Empanada's in a supermarket. As such, I was excited to finally get to try EG (Empanada Guy) at the Food Truck Mash-Up in Overpeck Park. Their menu included: Beef, Chicken, Chorizo, Cheese, and Lobster Lobster Empanadas ($4 each, $5 for Lobster) Cuban Sandwich $8 Tamales $3 I tried three Empanadas: Chorizo, Lobster, and Beef (mainly because there is a $10 minimum to pay by credit card - they use square) Chorizo: You could have told me this was the Cheese one and I would have believed it. No chorizo to be found in this. Maybe they did give me a cheese one by mistake?!?! If that's the case then it was okay, nothing special. Lobster: You ever make a lobster roll and the lobster you cook ends up not having much meat? So to yield more meat you start cracking the pereiopods (the walking legs) of the Lobster...the meat isn't as good it's firmer, almost rubbery in mouth feel, and there isn't much meat so it's hardly worth the effort but it does the trick?!?!? This was the lobster meat I tasted in the empanada not that it mattered because the bulk of the meat in this wasn't even lobster it was imitation crab?!?!?! The sauce the meat was mixed in was very salty and had a very odd after taste. Wildly disappointing and certainly not worth (while only a dollar) the upcharge! Okay Empanada Man not impressed yet, two down one to go, wow me! Beef: Okay, there is promise here. The filling is actually pretty good (not 40 minutes in a food truck line good) it's a picadillo beef....but wait, what's this WOW it's cold in the middle and the empanada is still doughy!!! Not the wow moment I was looking for. Even if it was cooked right I've had better empanada's in North Bergen for half the price. Sorry EG but you were a let down. Good luck with the TV show but you might want to perfect the empanadas before you mass produce them.

Empanadas - pork, chicken, beef. came with sauce.

However, the flavors were definitely there, which is what matters most. I tried the alcapurria, and while it was decent, I've had better. The chicken inside was a little dry and could have used more seasoning and flavor. On the other hand, the chicken empanada was really good. The chicken was tender, flavorful, and had a nice seasoned taste that stood out. That's definitely something I would order again. Unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures of my lunch, but I also ordered pernil with rice and gandules, as well as baked chicken with rice and gandules. As someone who loves pernil, I have to say that Puerto Ricans make some of the best pernil. It's always well-seasoned, flavorful, and tastes clean rather than overly greasy. The pernil here did not disappoint. The rice and gandules were also very good. While it doesn't quite compare to my husband's aunt's homemade version, it was still packed with flavor and complemented the meal perfectly. Overall, I enjoyed my experience and would come back to try more items from the menu. If you're in the area and craving Puerto Rican food, I think it's worth giving this place a try.
