You walk through the front door and you take a trip back in time. This is a drinker's bar, beer and spirits only - no food at all - other than snacks like small bags of chips. McCabe's is very small, unpretentious, and friendly. The coolest thing is the drive-up liquor store. You drive up to the window and the bartender inside hears a "ding" like the old time gas stations. Actually, it really IS an old gas station bell. (Check out my photos for an inside view of the mini-liquor store.) I've been here twice. The first time was only a brief visit to check it out and to get directions. But I returned today as a customer and I was amazed that the bartender remembered my name, remembered where I was from, and remembered what I asked him the first time. Impressive! (Maybe he just remembered my ugly mug.) Overall, like most places in New Richmond, I'm struck by how friendly and respectful everyone is. This is in huge contrast to my native Minnesota. The lime-radish slaw was dry and bland, the fish was fishy so I doused it with all the juice from my lemon slices that I could, but the hash browns were yummy. Our waitress was okay, but the bartender was the real star, making drinks, running inside to get our meals and deliver them, plus deliver ranch and ketchup later.

I went to Reid's Landing today and I am revising my rating downward. I still feel this is a…read morebeautiful location and view, especially for eagle watching (we were on our way back from nearby Wabasha, the home of the National Eagle Center). I had the soup special, a bowl of the French Onion Soup, and my wife had the Pub Burger. Although both dishes were presented attractively, neither one had a "wow" factor, and in fact, were bland and lacking in flavor. It's too bad because,I was really in the mood for Onion Soup. The onions were cooked well, but the soup really was lacking in taste. I think the broth tasted like canned broth and did not have any depth of flavor. My wife felt the same way about the hamburger; it also was bland. So neither dish was particularly memorable. So one less star for food. They also loose another star for their continued surcharge for both a credit card and a debit card. When I rated this place two years ago, they were charging a 5% "employee pay supplement" which is no longer legal. However, it is also illegal to charge a 3% surcharge on both credit cards and debit cards (this new law was effective in January of 2025). Restaurants CAN charge for credit cards, but it is illegal to surcharge for debit cards. In fact, not only is this a Minnesota law, it is a Federal law, and part of the rules for Visa and Mastercard. Another option is that restaurants CAN give a cash discount from the menu, but to do that the menu must show prices using the credit card price and state that they give a (in this case) a 3% discount for cash (note: a menu discount, not a menu surcharge). If a credit or debit card is used, then it must match the MENU price and the check needs to show the menu price total, and separately show the cash discount. I tried to show the General Manager this law and explain it, but he was very dismissive and borderline rude. At first he tried to tell me their was a discount for paying in cash, so I asked him if that was discount off of the menu price, and he said no. A lack of a surcharge is NOT a discount; it is a surcharge!
