EmeraldSydney is located in the Sola Salon building in Carlsbad. I have been going to Emerald since before she and Sydney opened their own place. Even though she's moved to a location that's further from my house, it's totally worth it!! The new salon is an intimate boutique with two chairs and a cozy, emerald-colored couch. The fact that it's run by two bubbly and friendly women who also happen to live together, makes you feel like you are instantly transported to your best friend's living room... if your best friends were also AWESOME at doing anything you could possibly want done to your hair! (Seriously, Emerald's made my hair every color under the sun and it looks flawless every time!) The new location beats the corporate salon vibe by a long shot and the free wine doesn't hurt!! For several years now I've trusted only Emerald or Sydney to do my hair. I found Sydney by sheer luck when I managed to color my hair with a horrible home color and needed an immediate fix. I ended up in the situation because too many previous stylists had either not listened when I talked to them about the specific colors that my hair pulls when done, and also because I've had more haircut nightmares than I care to remember. I was told Sydney was a master at being able to take a tragedy like I had on my head, and turn it into something wonderful...they were absolutely right! She also introduced me to Emerald, who has since done a fabulous job with my hair anytime she touches it. Over the years I have had the privilege of having both Emerald and Sydney color and cut my hair, and it turns out amazing every time. When they told me they were opening their own salon, I knew that I would follow them no matter where it was located. Other reviewers are right - both of these ladies have a way about them that makes you feel at ease, as if your instantly transported to your best friend's house...or to a family reunion, if you could actually choose the people in your family that you wanted to hang out with! I have pretty curly hair, and I can't believe it took me so long to find Emerald! I used to not trust anyone to cut my hair because it would always come out choppy or uneven, but Emerald understands that curly hair should be cut a particular way- and she is SUCH a pro at it! Not only that, but Emerald has helped me figure out how to style my hair so that it looks tidy but beautiful every day- I used to just cross my fingers that it would behave. She also has given me beautiful highlights that I absolutely love and get a ton of compliments on. I will literally never go to anyone else! She will also be doing my hair for my wedding because literally no one is allowed to touch my hair except for her! Having a great hair stylist is so, so important. It's something that I actually appreciate every day, because I'm the one dealing with my hair every day! When I questioned the likelihood of booking 2 appointments, back to back, her spineless reaction was to cancel the appointment she rescheduled. My curls and my hairstylist are important to me. I want someone that I can openly communicate my needs and desires; integrity and professionalism are also very important. Emerald obviously does not meet my standards. After having some very bad hair cuts, I was very weary of trying something new, after doing some research I decided on trying a Devacurl cut and started to do some more research through the website and Yelp. I came across Emerald and decided to book an appointment after much thought, I had not had a haircut in about 6 years! Emerald is personable and easy to talk with, the few hours flew by and before I knew it I had a beautiful new cut. She explained everything along the way including how to style my new shorter cut. I wish I could give Emerald 10 stars! I brought in my 12-year old biracial daughter who has had absolutely horrible and frightening experiences in salons. She has super tight and dense coily curls, her hair is incredibly thick, and she is extremely tender headed. We found Emerald in researching the devacurl method and, based on her many positive reviews, made a consultation. Walking out of that consultation, my daughter was actually excited about the prospect of coming back for her haircut. Emerald took the time to talk with my daughter about what she does on an every day basis and explained everything she was doing. Four hours later (yes, four hours), my daughter was glowing and confident and ridiculously happy. Today, she got ready for school and wore her beautiful, healthy natural curls down in all their glory. Emerald, to say "thank you" just seems so wholly inadequate. You were the first stylist who didn't shame my daughter for her hair. Your positive nature and guidance on what she can do differently have given my daughter her confidence that she was so desperately needing. We are so lucky to have found you! Sydney is the BEST for color and design! I moved to San Diego about 7yrs ago and stopped by a local Ulta at the time in hopes of finding a new stylist that I could rely on and it was a perfect fit. 7yrs later, I could never imagine going to anyone else. From dark brunette to bright copper to vibrant cabernet red to golden tones to blonde balayage, we've been through it all and I have never gotten up from her chair without being anything less than ecstatic over the results. I love Sydney for her talent of course but also for the passion she has for her art. She gets excited over her visions and she actually cares about the internal health of your hair! I love that there have been times where she's been honest with me about not getting me to the exact color I've wanted in a single appointment for the sake of keeping my hair long and healthy. Guess you can't go from dark brown to platinum in a night, who knew? Lol! Patience is a virtue at times and I've always appreciated how she's taken the time to educate me. She's also super hip and has always been easy to talk to. In fact, I consider her one of my friends now. I referred my best friend to Sydney and she came home with a beautiful pink hue to her blonde hair, something that's she's always wanted. If you're looking for a stylist sits on a spectrum of talent, meaning that they can lock in the most natural blonde color, or the most vibrant mermaid colors, then you've found your girl. Book early! I really wanted to like Emerald and make her my new hairdresser. I like supporting new small businesses, since I have one myself. Unfortunately she was super unreliable. I had an appointment booked for a Thursday at 1pm and she texted me an hour before to cancel and said she would like to reschedule and offer me a discount. It was 2 days before my friends wedding and I really wanted my hair done, so I asked her for a Friday appointment. She said she was fully booked and could recommend someone else. I told her I wouldn't want to go to someone else, how Monday would be (now it's a week out from my bday and I would like my hair done). She didn't respond. I messaged her once more on Monday and asked her whether she would still like to reschedule me. She didn't reply again. Maybe she's not in need of new customers, but I still think it's no way of treating people. read more

Emerald and Sydney did hair for myself and my bridal party (6 of us total) on my wedding day. Not only are they both delightful and great to talk to, but they worked with everything from super long, thick curly hair to very short and and thin, and they made us all look amazing! We asked for a vintage/pin up look, and they worked from the pictures I had, their own expertise, and the desires of each individual girl to make sure everyone loved their hair. Everyon'e hair held well all day and night, and we ended the night with perfect hair. Not only that, but I never go to anyone but Emerald when I need my hair cut - I've never had someone who "gets" my hair like she does. Can't recommend these ladies highly enough! read more
