Had to stop using Embee after nearly 20 years. The last time I was there, I was quoted $2,500 for a job that I had done for $600 before. They dropped the price to $1,600, saying it was the best they could do because of tariffs and rising cost of business. I believed them and gave them the job. Afterwards, something still felt off, so I went to 3 other shops and was quoted $400-600 for the same thing. Yesterday, I noticed the coating Embee did that last time, is coming off after a couple 2x4's were strapped to the piece. Poor customer service at best. Lost parts over the last 9 months and never paid back or even willing to pay back the parts we had to replace. And the parts we replaced they charged us again. Recently I was told that if we needed our parts sooner than 2-3 weeks we would have to pay extra. Called to talk to manager (worthless customer service personal I have ever met) over part that got lost. Left several phone messages for him to call me back and he never did. So I had to personally go and see if they could find our parts. He preferred to call the police to have me removed than to assist in lost parts. Back in the day before the new owner and management you could count on quality service with no hassles. Can you imagine that we spent over $100k in just that last few years and the manager is willing to give that up for lost parts not even to look for them or make it good? Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. I would not give Embee a toilet paper stand to powder coat. However I would give the manager a half roll of toilet paper for his half bass management skills. read more

Got my Berkeley jet pump powder coated because they were supposedly the best. When I got it back I was beyond disappointed. Power coat had pin holes everywhere and looked terrible. I have seen there work on other peoples boats and there's had none of the stuff mine had. Powder coated over the bowl screws and I guess it was hard for them to tape around the Berkeley model plate correctly. One year later and two trips. The powder is chipping everywhere. The pump, and bowl look horrendous. The place diverter is still alright though . Then after asking to get the some of the parts redone they thought it's fine to yell at me in anger that this isn't there fault. read more

The company I work for has a 1.7 billion dollar budget so cost is not a factor. The agreement was we would powder coat 299 pieces at 50 a time and they would invoice us. After doing the second round the attitude started. I went to pick up the second round and the knuckle head at the counter wouldn't give me the items without paying. I called around to get quotes to powdercoat 6 midcentury Bertoia outside dining chairs. The first Patio company: $265 per chair!! Another place in Newport: $120 per chair. Embee: $65. And they did an outstanding job!! They blasted all the old paint/rust off, then coat of primer and final coat, and additional coat for mat finish. They look soooooo great!! Did I mention they turned these around in less than one week! (Helps to do these in off season...like now.) Could not be happier. Pat was especially helpful and super friendly and professional. Not super impressed with the quality of work. Started off with having to pay minimum ($80) for just an exhaust tip canister; but that's their policy so can't blame them for that. However, prep on canister was shabby at best as was not smoothed out before placing ceramic coating so you can see marks from previous powder coating. Was told ceramic turn around time was 7-10 days so I was excited to get a call only 3 days after dropping off exhaust. However, now I see why it only took 3 days. I would have rather waited a few extra days for some time and care in the prep work as for me to remove now would involve having to ruin a freshly-packed canister. Don't mind paying for quality, but when it's not there and you're still paying for it it's a bit frustrating. Don't know if I'd go back. May find a shop here in Orange next time powder coating is needed. read more

I had an exhaust manifold ceramic coated by Embee last year and it turned out great. I came back to use them for powder coating my brake calipers and I had a really bad experience this time around. The initial conversation / start of the process was positive when I dropped off my calipers. Eric answered all of my questions and listened to what I had to say. I left my calipers with him along with a bag of my old piston seals. I recommended that they use the old seals as a masking template since they are consumable and I have brand new ones to install. Before I left, they told me it would take 1.5 - 2 weeks to complete. When I picked up the calipers, I immediately noticed a problem with the spraying. They clearly did not use my old seals as a masking template and sprayed onto the lip sealing surface of my cylinders. Additionally, there was leftover blue tape trapped under powder coat and small amounts of over spray inside the piston bore. I asked the cashier if I should be concerned about this. She said, "no it's fine, we do it like this all the time." When I tried assembling the brand new seals, they did not fit over the lip. The powder coated surfaced added over a millimeter of thickness to the lip and the seal would not sit over it. I returned the calipers to Embee for rework as it was unacceptable like this. I reiterated that they should use my old seals as a masking template in order to avoid spraying in places they shouldn't be spraying in. I also alternatively suggested to just not spray the inside of the caliper entirely. Another 2 weeks went by and they charged me again for service upon pick up. This time, the insides of the caliper were left as unfinished cast iron like I requested. However, there was still over spray from the masking. It didn't matter to me since I was going to use VHT over it and my old seals to spray the insides myself. My second attempt at assembling my calipers was again halted due to over spray onto the threads of my bleeder valve. I will need to either use a thread chaser to clean out the powder coating and risk getting pieces of powder coat inside my caliper, or have them redone somewhere else. I don't want to return my calipers back to Embee for a third session of rework and service charges. A few other notes: - There seems to be a lack of communication within the company or something. From my experience, the front desk, cashier, labor in the back are not coordinated. Front desk originally quoted me $80/caliper, but cashier charged me only $60/caliper. Not a bad thing, but something was off. Both times when my calipers were complete, I never received a phone call telling me it was done. I had to check in to see if they were done. - I notice that they like to get to the invoice first, before showing you the finished product/service. On both experiences with different cashiers, they presented me with an invoice and pen to sign first. I had to ask them to bring me my calipers first before I sign off on the work and hand over my credit card. read more

They were very friendly and very honest about how the color I was choosing would look, which I appreciated. I received the items back looking great. Fast forward six months, no issues at all, but needed to get another wheel powder coated as it will be my spare on my 1950 F1. I could not find the original paper work and forgot the exact color. I went in and they had everything on file and was even able to provide the old paperwork for my records. I was very impressed that they still had everything in the system and easy to look up. Received many recommendations about these guys for the excellent work they do in powder coating. Upon further research, I discovered they are a 5 minute drive from where I live and do more than just powder coat. Upon finding out they do performance coatings, anodizing, etc.. I brought in a set of headers and pipes to be ceramic coated. It took them about a week turnaround time at an excellent price for coating the inside AND outside of my headers. It's definitely a quality job because I made a few idiot marks when installing the piping and it barely scratched the ceramic coat. HIGHLY recommend these guys if you need any engine components coated in SoCal.
