La Paloma Theatre - It needs a lot of TLC but I love these old theaters.

    La Paloma Theatre

There probably isn't one person on Yelp who remembers the old Ken Theater in Kensington. The Ken…read morewas around forever, maybe 60 or 70 years, before it sadly folded. La Paloma is the closest thing around to the dearly departed Ken. How is it like the Ken? On the positive side, it shows an eclectic mix of movies on the big screen that you can't find anywhere else. Like "Groundhog Day" on Groundhog Day. Like "Casablanca" and "2001: A Space Odyssey." Like "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," a mostly awful movie that I have seen on the big screen too many times to admit. The ticket prices are reasonable. The design of the theater itself, although the building is clearly falling apart, is unique. The popcorn is freshly made. You can hear the Coaster train roll by a couple of times every showing. Now, you need to know that some of the seats are literally falling apart. The ones that aren't falling apart are not comfortable. This is not Cinepolis. Still, a few of us appreciate these old dinosaurs because of what they offer and what you can't find anywhere else.

The owner is super chill (along with his furry sidekick who enjoys belly scratches) and does a great job rotating movies from new, old and independent films. Ticket prices do vary depending on the event. Sometimes I've paid $1, other times $12, but for my all time favorite Rocky Horror Picture Show, it's priceless!!! Highly recommend catching a midnight show on Halloween with a live performance. Here are some key points if you plan on visiting: * Parking - There is parking directly behind the theater in the transit center or you can find off street parking. * Cash Only - This is a cash only venue. Unless you visit their website and buy tickets online but you will have to pay a service fee. It's honestly not necessary because the theater is not crowded (except for special events, did I mention Rocky Horror). *Concession Stand - They do serve some of the best popcorn with real butter. Trust me, buy some! Sodas, Red Bull, teas, and candy. Again, cash only. * Restrooms - Always clean, well stocked. * Seating - Ok it's a very old theater and the seats match the esthetic. They are old, worn down, musty but hey, no complaints. Just enjoy the show! Check their website for the latest showing and times. Retro Rewinds are a must!

Oh my goodness. If you are wedding planning and hunting for vendors, stop here. Quit scrolling. Do…read morenot pass go. Stockham Media is the right choice for you. You only get married once, hopefully, and you want your big day to be epically captured. Dillan and his team did exactly that for us. Our package included a "Love Story" video before the big day. We got together with Dillan in Balboa Park and spent the afternoon filming and getting to know each other. I cannot stress this enough, getting this face time in beforehand, and getting to meet Dillan and see what a lovely person is, made us feel so at ease on our wedding day. By the time Dillan and his team arrived we already felt so comfortable and cared for, that it felt like welcoming another guest to the celebration, instead of feeling unsure of how to act around a camera. Plus, the gorgeous sweeping drone coverage they captured at our ceremony site seriously feels like something from a movie. We received our wedding highlight video this week and my new husband and I can't stop watching it. We have cried like 75 times, in the nicest way possible. Stockham Media took our day and turned it into a cohesive, shareable story that we can now treasure and revisit for years to come. We were so impressed with their warmth and professionalism, and can't recommend them enough. Happy planning!

In addition to all of the raw footage (ceremony, speeches, etc.), Dillan also produces a short 4-7min Wedding Day video to encapsulate the big day and enable us to rewatch some of the highlight moments again and again. He even incorporated our vows into the intro of the video, which gave the whole thing an ethereal sense of sentimentality before diving into the more "party vibe" of the second half of the video... it's a really cool end product to have, and we even bought a digital coffee table book to show it off the right way. Dillan even allowed us to choose the music for that video, which made us feel like we were part of the creative process as well, and certainly made the video feel more like "OURS" than if he had not brought us into the loop like he did. Dillan even seemed to have a good time on the day of... he was obviously there to do a job but it certainly felt nice to feel like he was enjoying being part of the day, and that in turn helped everybody there to be at their most natural and comfortable in the wedding day footage. Would certainly recommend Dillan, two thumbs up!

(Author Andy Weir also wrote The Martian and Artemis, both of which I enjoyed.) There were a few theater options in the Carlsbad/Oceanside area, and Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas Paseo Real stood out for its fully reclining seats and in-theater dining. Reviews were decent, so we gave it a shot. Our party of four reserved seats for a weekday afternoon showing. If you can swing that timing, it's worth it. Tickets are cheaper and the theater is noticeably quieter. The seating was very comfortable, exactly what you'd hope for in a "luxury" theater. The venue itself felt a bit tired in spots, but still perfectly respectable. As for the movie, I enjoyed it. Ryan Gosling delivered a strong performance. Like most adaptations, it didn't quite live up to the book, but it was still very entertaining. Bottom line: Comfortable seating, a relaxed atmosphere, and a solid viewing experience. I'd be happy to come back.

I get my tickets via an application and then when I arrive I show it to the person in the box office/info area inside. They'll kindly tell you what auditorium it's in and where it's located. Easy peasy. I was slightly disappointed that I couldn't just order my popcorn in the concession area but rather had to use the order in your seat feature. On my last visit the previews weren't too long of a performance before the movie started just 13 minutes post the ticketed time. Even though I only wanted popcorn I curiously explored my options on the menu located on the rotating arm tables. Just push the glowing circle button for your attendant to take your order. I missed the very beginning of the movie because ordering in my seat slightly distracted me. I didn't even realize it wasn't another preview to another movie but rather the actual movie I came for. So for me it's a toss up between liking this feature and disliking it. The staffers were kind and had enjoyed my friends and my banter about it. We all had a good chuckle. Going on a Monday evening is nice since it's not as busy but also know that it's half the cost on a Tuesday evening. FYI. *It's also hit or miss on cleanliness but overall it seems better here than other venues by the same name. Also note: make sure you're heading to the right La Costa theater because there are two ~~ just in different centers. We didn't make a mistake this time so that was a "Whew!"
