The route was stunning and peaceful, and the e-bikes made the whole experience effortless and fun. The bikes themselves were top-quality--smooth, comfortable, and clearly very well maintained. But what really made the experience exceptional was the customer service. Brandon, the owner, went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. Received a call the next day saying…read morethe 130pm tour was already full for the next few days (not sure why it let me book online then). But luckily I was able to be flexible and switch to the morning tour (they gave me a day's notice). The staff on the phone said it would be much less windy anyway...which definitely turned out to be true and I was so glad for it bc it would've been chilly otherwise! They're doing great on the Covid safety measures as much as possible. Instead of parking at the office and riding a bus to the bay, they just have you either follow the guide in his vehicle with the kayaks or give you an address/coordinates for your gps. It was easy to keep up with our guide. Everyone wore masks until we got into our own individual kayaks. Very easy to practice social distancing in this setting! The office was very easy to find, right off the highway and even has a winery right next door (and was highly recommended by the host at my inn). Plenty of parking everywhere we went. After a brief safety talk and bit of equipment orientation, we launched from a rocky beach in Freshwater Bay and went out into the Strait of San Juan de Fuca. It was absolutely gorgeous weather - sunny and calm and a perfect temperature. The water was insanely clear! We saw jellyfish and kelp crabs and all manner of birds! We even sampled a little bit of the kelp haha! Our guide, Chris, was so knowledgeable and he made the tour interesting and really fun! There's even a little cave you can swoop through if you have one of the smaller kayaks! I highly recommend you bring sturdy water shoes and waterproof camera!

He outfitted us with everything we would need including a banana to snack on! I felt completely safe the entire time even though I'd been nervous going into it and my boyfriend still felt like he'd had an adventure. We're both from the prairies so seeing sea stars, seals, crab, eagles, and even boats was pretty exciting for us. Excellent fun and we plan to do it again!

Let me tell you a story about how Seth saved me from a dumb dad move and thereby saved my weekend -…read more Busy weekend out on the island with the fam, lots of hustle and bustle - in the midst of a couple days where it feels like nothing is going quite right on the family front. Looking to turn things around, I decide to install the kid seat on the back of my wife's bike for our 2 y.o. so we can do the ol' family bike ride (that'll fix it!). In a moment of overzealousness though, I give that over-tight, cheap screw in the back of her bike a turn-too-many with the allen wrench: it's stripped, but maybe salvageable. But what do I do? I think, "I can still get it...." So I jump back in there: cheap screw vs. cheap allen wrench, and I send that screw straight to The Land of No Return. It's never coming out now. Enter Seth and Meat Machine. Now, mind you, I had already been down there the day before - or my wife had - for another bike-related issue (I told you - it was that kind of weekend). So, I limp in there, figuratively speaking, and in my shame I present El Strippo to Seth. What does he do? He doesn't make my feel bad. He doesn't hesitate. Immediately, almost un-questioningly, he throws that bad boy up on the lift. He explains that this is not going to be easy and expresses concern that he'll break the head off the screw and then it's done (the seat is never going on in that case). He tries one expensive hex after another. No dice. Last resort: he busts out the blow torch. "Let's put a little heat on it." And he does, and, like magic, that baby starts to move! With the turning of the screw, hearts lift, hope returns - the screw it out. The day - the family bike ride - is saved. No charge. I headed outside and, literally, the clouds cleared (though I'm not sure I credit Seth with that one). But he and Meat Machine did save the day, no doubt. Great little shop. Friendly helpful guys. As someone who used to cycle avidly, gave it up, and came back after a decade, I can attest to the massive benefit of TBS and Pete's approach to cycling. For novices, everyone here creates a welcoming environment with no aggressive upselling or scoffing. Every question is thoughtfully answered and they take their time. They've built up an incredible community and every time we stop by we see regulars. Group rides on Thursdays (looking forward to those!) also help with community building. I can't stress enough how lucky we are to have Pete and his team in our town.
