Let me tell you a story about how Seth saved me from a dumb dad move and thereby saved my weekend - Busy weekend out on the island with the fam, lots of hustle and bustle - in the midst of a couple days where it feels like nothing is going quite right on the family front. Looking to turn things around, I decide to install the kid seat on the back of my wife's bike for our 2 y.o. so we can do the ol' family bike ride (that'll fix it!). In a moment of overzealousness though, I give that over-tight, cheap screw in the back of her bike a turn-too-many with the allen wrench: it's stripped, but maybe salvageable. But what do I do? I think, "I can still get it...." So I jump back in there: cheap screw vs. cheap allen wrench, and I send that screw straight to The Land of No Return. It's never coming out now. Enter Seth and Meat Machine. Now, mind you, I had already been down there the day before - or my wife had - for another bike-related issue (I told you - it was that kind of weekend). So, I limp in there, figuratively speaking, and in my shame I present El Strippo to Seth. What does he do? He doesn't make my feel bad. He doesn't hesitate. Immediately, almost un-questioningly, he throws that bad boy up on the lift. He explains that this is not going to be easy and expresses concern that he'll break the head off the screw and then it's done (the seat is never going on in that case). He tries one expensive hex after another. No dice. Last resort: he busts out the blow torch. "Let's put a little heat on it." And he does, and, like magic, that baby starts to move! With the turning of the screw, hearts lift, hope returns - the screw it out. The day - the family bike ride - is saved. No charge. I headed outside and, literally, the clouds cleared (though I'm not sure I credit Seth with that one). But he and Meat Machine did save the day, no doubt. Great little shop. Friendly helpful guys. The guys at Meat Machine Cycles are heroes: I was a fool and forgot to check my brake pads before headed to San Juan Island. Half way through the trip I was metal-on-metal; sounded horrible besides being not at all safe. The guys at Meat Machine didn't have the pads but rummaged through a catch-all bin and managed to find a pair of pads to fit. I had a phenomenal experience with Seth and the team at Meat Machine Cycles. I was at FHL for an extended period of time and was able to rent a bike from them the entire time. The bike (Cannondale Quick) was in great shape and they hooked me up with a helmet, saddle back, pump, phone holder, etc. The rental prices were also better here than anywhere in the Seattle/San Juan area. Ignore the ridiculous name. We had a fantastic experience renting bikes from this company. Rent electric bikes for sure - some places will rent you a " fitness bike" which is non electric but some of the hills around here are no joke ( even in " turbo" mode I got a work out at times for some steep uphill parts). The best thing about the rental is it's all day ( other places in the area charge more for a 3 hour rental ). Even though the bike shop closes at 2 pm you can keep the bikes until 9. Owners will give you a map and recommendations - we biked about 20 miles to the south side of island and back and parked the bikes and took a 4 mile hike in the middle to mount Finlayson loop trail. Including the hike we did everything in about 3.5 hours and the views along the way were amazing. The bikes AND helmets are quite comfortable and were just fantastic. These guys were fantastic. Rented two Cannondale Synapses that did a good job of soaking up the chip and seal roads, and could easily handle the hills, including mount Dallas, which is short but no joke. Did 100+ miles over 3 days. Brought our shoes and they were able to put on Look Keo clips for me and Deltas for my wife's Peloton shoes. Nothing but good to say. read more

My wife and I came to Friday Harbor for a wedding. We decided to leave the car in Anacortes and bike to all wedding events instead. I cannot sing the praises of MM high enough! The Cannondale hybrid bikes were solid and comfortable. They had a brand new Burley luggage carriage for us as well. We biked about 12 miles a day over three days, and it could not have gone better. There's no better way to get to know the Island than to do so by bike! Seth was immediately responsive to any questions. He even contacted us after the fact because he found a few things we left behind, and will be mailing them to us. A+ equipment, friendly staff, convenient downtown location. Rented electric bikes for the day and were able to take them around the entire island hitting up the lavender farm, lime kiln state park, alpaca farm, San Juan park, and English camp on them. We were pretty beat by the end but the e bikes definitely saved our butts on those inclines! The bikes were in great condition and we were supplied even with an insulation pack for food for the back of the bike. We did this on a Tuesday after Memorial Day so not too many other bikers and cars on the road. The guy with the broken arm was super nice and gave great instructions. Overall a hassle free and memorable experience! The only thing is the seats got pretty uncomfortable by the end of our 35 mile bike ride... so bring padding or biking shorts! read more

It was late in the day but Isaac was super helpful, set me up and told me I could return it after hours, no problem - off I went on a really nice Cannondale Quick NEO bike. After a great ride around the area I returned it, where owner Seth was on the shop deck enjoying a cold brewski after hours indeed.
