Worst customer experience I've ever had at a bike shop in Victoria. The mechanics are incredibly…read morerude. I stopped in yesterday to see if I might be able to get a new chain for my bike. That was all I wanted, yet the mechanic starts off with, "If you want everything that's wrong with this bike fixed, it'll be $225." I'm like, WHAT. I just wanted the chain fixed. He pulls out his chain tool to show me exactly how worn the chain in (yeah, I know, that's why I'm there), and we talk about that and the fact the cassette's worn. Fine, yeah, I definitely should've replaced the chain earlier. And then he says, "yeah, and your bike is pretty dirty. I don't like to work on dirty bikes." But it's ok, they'll wash my bike for $40. I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt at this point, but he kept referring to how dirty my bike was, and questioning my ability to clean it when I said I would. Again, it's a BICYCLE. I ride it over 40km every single day. It's going to be dirty. I agree I should clean it before I bring it to the mechanic, and that's my fault, but I had to keep hearing about it over and over and felt really shamed. Thank goodness they didn't actually have the time to complete my repair, because I'll never go back.

Easy to miss but once you remember where exactly it is and how to get there they are one of the…read morebest repair shops in Victoria and worth the effort to find. Helpful clear advice balanced to the level of understanding of the owner. Heck they will even offer advice for the DIY folks. Their basement parts and work room is more organized than the VGH operating ward! The guy could hire himself out to feung shui my garage anytime.

Cycles West has been my go to bike shop for three years now. We've bought a couple of kids bikes…read morefrom them. Two new, two used. They also maintain all my families bicycles. I have all the bikes serviced once a year and we don't have any issues. It's a little costly but it's worth it because the kids and I can just hop on our bikes and ride. The Garneau kids bikes are well worth the money, way better than the Canadian Tire bike we have. Still trying to find an excuse to trade my Rocky Mountain in for a new Brodie because they are sooo nice... Good service, good products, very friendly and VERY knowledgeable. That's why it's my go to bike shop.

When he…read moregave me the quote I asked why it was so expensive when I had only asked to have the brakes fixed. He told me that he had also included a $79 charge for a tune up. I told him that I had not asked for that service and to please remove it from my bill. When I went to pick up my bike today my $70 quote he had given me at the time of assessment (he had told me that 2 other parts needed replacing as well as the brakes) was now a $151 bill. He had neglected to mention the $60 labour charge in my quote. It feels similar to the way car mechanics are known to take advantage of women or people who don't know much about cars when they enter a shop. I'm not even sure if those other parts needed replacing or he just said that they did so he could charge me more money. I would not trust this man again and I do not believe in the way he conducts business.

I was recommended to this bike shop by a more downtown bike store. Kind of them. So many to…read morechoose from in and around Victoria, but I think I really found one of the best. It was time to get a new bike. I'd just discovered walk-thru's which sounded like a pretty good idea. Less leg lifting. I'm also very keen on the Specialized brand. My last one was, alas, stolen in Vancouver some years' back, or I'm sure I'd still be riding and enjoying that one. Some good advice given wrt my purchase. I found just the one at Russ's. It took a few weeks' to come, from the USA. After just a single ride I knew there was something wrong with it. And it wasn't as simple as the chain slipping. Over to Mike the bike. He came to the house. Had a ride on it. Took it away. Had some adjustments made and I got it back. I didn't use it again for 7 months. Took it out of its wraps in June. It was playing up again. But worse. Back to phoning Mike, who was, again, incredibly helpful. He came personally once more, hoping it was a quick fix. It was not. He took it away again. Took it out for a ride and the malfunctioning that was happening to me came up on his ride. And was immediately recognisable by him as a duff bike. Mike to the rescue. He did all the necessary things with Specialized and within a couple of weeks I not only had a new bike, same colour, features, but also a new invoice with a fresh serial number. Which I hope isn't important down the road. He delivered it to me on a Saturday. I am up and riding again. Loving my bike. Loving the service and the can-do attitude of Russ Hays bikes and some great staff. Try them first! A 100% recommendation from me. Happy and safe biking to all!

I have ridden my bike across nine countries in the last six years and I have dealt with a lot of bike shops, often with the same problem that none of them seemed to be able to fix (gearing issue). Russ Hay's experienced staff fixed it. The welcoming staff, the exceptional service, the perfect assessment of what was needed, and the fair cost for parts and labor were all top notch. I wouldn't go anywhere else if I had a choice. I just wish they had a shop in Aruba (my next biking adventure)!
