This is only the 2nd review I've submitted to YELP, that said, I felt compelled to let the world know of this "under-the-radar-screen" gem. Pedro at Hotel Cuitat de Girona knows the local scene and referred us to it -- wow! Do not be turned-off by the vibe when you first walk-in the door, as the place has a non-conventional aesthetic and staff that boarder on bohemian and edgy (e.g. you cannot judge a book by it's cover) and the dining rooms can appear empty, as he big draw is the outdoor courtyard dining area which requires a reservation.
Walking into the place with my wife, we almost decided it wasn't our scene, but Pedro steered us right with his other recommendations, so we "went with it'! By luck they had a table for two outside and the night was absolutely magical. This is Catalonian-inspired food with formal culinary traing. The staff spoke very little English, but we wrestled through the language barrier with the very accommodating and hospitable young staff. who must each burn 2000-calories a night navigating the long runs between the kitchen and outdoor seated guests while providing attention, but not overbearing service.
We visited Girona in July and the experience still lingers in our minds. Two nights later we couldn't get inspired to try something else on our last night in Girona, so we went back. The staff surprisingly remembered us and apologized for not having an outdoor table, so we opted to stay and eat in the shabby-chic avant-garde dinning room. Still a great experience, food and service. You can feel the passion of the young staff . We learned this is an "in-the-know" locals restaurant from a Girona-based cycling tour group we contracted with for the Tour de France trip after, and they were blown away we found out about the place.
Go to this place ... seriously!!!! read more
