I first discovered Elmisa in Rancho Bernardo, and was SO excited when this one in Escondido opened up! Their food options are delicious and above & beyond your average sandwich shop. The atmosphere is cute and inviting. The owners & employees are always so friendly and helpful. We've never had a meal we didn't enjoy here. My family's current top favorites that we're always happy to recommend to others are: Rula hot sandwich, chicken artichoke Panini, bacon havarti breakfast sandwich, bagel & Lox, Westwood Cali, salads, & any of their flatbreads if on the lunch specials board. We have come back to Elmisa from time to time because we desperately want to support a local, non-chain cafe. This place has so much potential but it is struggling under the weight of poor service and careless food preparation. We went here today for brunch and every service interaction was strained. I asked the lady taking my order if there were side options besides just chips - she casually pointed to the cooler off to the side where some mystery containers were stacked. I asked her, "what is it?" She replied "pasta." Ooooookay... so are you saying pasta is an option? What kind of pasta? I finally had to go over and investigate myself.. I saw pasta salad, fruit, parfaits, etc. I just grabbed a bowl of fruit and finished my order. I later saw that the menu also had soup, which would have been nice to know! The tables were all dirty and I asked a staff member if they could wipe one down and she pointed to the napkins. Really? Okay.. they forgot the chocolate croissant with our order and I went up to ask for it and the other girl didn't acknowledge my question and just rushed off. She did later bring the missing croissant but it was so strange that she didn't even respond with something as simple as "sorry! We will bring it out to you." I got a hampeno and it was drowning in chipotle sauce and had stem end tomatoes. I got a Diet Coke in a can and it smelled like musty plastic. It was so soggy that I had to eat it with a fork and knife. The food was mediocre as a whole but the service definitely needs improvement. read more

Elmisa used to be a go to! I was excited they opened a location in Escondido as it's closer to me than their RB location. Now that they've discontinued my 2 favorites, I'm not sure if I'll be returning as I've tried several other items on the menu that just haven't been my cup of tea. It's a shame because the staff is so friendly and they have a nice outdoor patio so you can bring your well behaved dogs. The interior can get a bit stuffy especially when it's busy. I came here for lunch and was craving something light and fresh. This was the perfect pick. I was drawn to the menu because there was a wide variety of options from sandwiches, bowls, smoothies, and more. Upon walking into the cafe I was welcomed by the staff. There inside of the cafe has plenty of seating. I ordered the fig and prosciutto toast and I really enjoyed it! The flavors of all the toppings went together very nicely. I was really impressed by the options for the toasts. I like that this cafe adds protein to to most of their avocado toasts. A lot of other cafes will charge the same amount and will not include protein. I think it's worth it for the price point! I also ordered the banana red and blue smoothie with almond milk instead of apple juice. The was the only downside to my meal. It tasted really watered down and bland. It could have been due to using the almond milk instead of juice. Although based on the runny consistency I feel they may blend the smoothies with ice. My feedback would be to use only frozen fruit for the smoothies for maximum flavor or add honey. I will definitely be back to try the other things on the menu! read more

Stopped in for a quick bite and coffee on my way home from an appointment and have passed this cafe multiple times before finally catching them during business hours. I ordered a peanut butter and chocolate latte and breakfast sandwich. I personally am not a fan of eggs in my breakfast sandwich, and should have ordered without it. To me the sandwich was perfect without and extremely filling. The drink was too sweet for my tastes, and tasted a little grainy, possibly from the peanut butter that's spread on the sides of the cup. Definitely a flavor profile that works well, just missed for my personal tastes which is of no fault to the cafe. I will want to come back to try other items because I'm sure they have some fantastic drinks on their menu and my taste just didn't align with that particular drink. read more

There were some people grabbing stuff for the office and a family or two enjoying a breakfast with their young kids. They provide seating inside or out on the patio. Very clear menu options and a board with a couple of special on it. My wife went for a coffee and I got a shake/smoothie. We tried a couple of their bagel options and then cut them in half so we could each try two different ones. Made fresh and very delicious. Not sure if the food was pricey because it was in California or if that's just what breakfast places charge these days, but after eating it we had no complaints. Havarti cheese, green chile, pickled onions, horseradish aioli, all on a crusty French hoagie roll. Perfect. And the au jus . . . very different. Went for lunch with my girl friends today and we were all pleasantly surprised! The Reuben sandwich was 10/10, the Roast Beef Panini was 10/10, the Turkey Brie cranberry sandwich was 8/10, the Turkey pesto balsamic was 9/10. The wait was around 5-8 minutes and the food was nice and hot. Service was great and the ambience was nice! I only have one complaint... the restroom smelled like sewer. I couldn't use it. Physically, it looked clean, but the smell was extremely pungent. Not sure where the smell was coming from, but that really needs to be tended to. Other than that, our experience was lovely. I hope that gets corrected and I would love to comeback for more yummy sandwiches! read more

My wife got the Morning Breakfast on a Croissant bread with ham and it was ok. Our friend liked her Elmisa salad. But both our breads were on the overly toasted side really brown with burnt marks. I've worked in breakfast places a long time in my younger days and was taught never to serve over brown burnt marked bread, but that's just me.
