Stopped here on our way out of Elk for some beverage and snacks for the road. This shop is a very friendly and cozy shopping space, they carry pretty good variety for the size. We rolled up right at 11am when it opened - funny story was that the sign was still flipped to "Closed" and there was a small line outside wondering if the store was open yet - it was, and the staff was friendly! There is a nice souvenirs/knick-knacks section in the middle with some fun options to bring home. We picked up a super nice tote.

The Elk Store is a fun stop on the way north from Point Arena on Hwy. 1; a nice place to pick up some lunch and stretch your legs. You can browse for picnic goods or get one of their sandwiches (we enjoyed our reubens). If you cross the highway and head towards the ocean, you'll find restrooms asome picnic tables with great views and a short coastal trail. Staff were not unpleasant, but not particularly friendly or communicative either.

The cutest little mini grocery store with amazing sandwiches that were so fresh. This place was located literally right around the corner from our stay which made it great for walking to. They had all the basics you might need and most of the items were of high quality. Sweet little gem find. Only thing to note is they do close early which may not be ideal if you're getting in late which we did.

Stayed in Elk for a few days so we stopped here one day looking for cheese for a charcuterie board. Yelp has Elk Store marked as a cheese stop which is def is not but a general store/sandwich shop it is. The staff was super friendly and we felt welcomed when we walked in. Even though they didn't have much of a cheese selection they are well stocked for picnics so we opted to get some lunch and snacks to go. They are pretty well stocked - local wines, fancy sodas (like Mexican Coke and Fanta), and a good array of snacks including chips and local crafts too. They offer a nice selection of paninis that are ready to press or you could order a custom sandwich. The caprese panini with pesto was ok, but the tomato needed to be fresher. My brother loved the Grinder which was chock full of various meats and my friend ordered a custom sammy made of turkey and cheese. She raved about hers and it looked super good. Definitely a must stop if in or around Elk.

This is a belated, belated review! This store is so cool that we went back twice in one day last summer! Breakfast sammies in the morning outside on the bench & then a walk to the beach across the street is a must. Went back for some more supplies, had a nice chat with the owner, and discovered some delicious wine. Liked the vibe so much that we are literally putting it on our itinerary for our next trip to the area!

This was a great stop on my ride along the coast. They had some nice fresh pastries. Just a quaint little area to rest.

Good sandos. Great stop in general along the coast to feed hungry tourists. Trailhead across the street to a wonderful beach. Ample parking.

Pennyroyal Farm - Pinot Noir

Pennyroyal Farm

Farm-to-table magic on California's North Coast…read more One of our favorite stops and one we still daydream about was Pennyroyal Farm. The cheeses alone are worth the drive, especially their Laychee which happened to be studded with fresh blueberries when we visited. If you try only one thing, make it the seasonal Laychee. It's unforgettable. We also devoured their ultra creamy deviled eggs, sipped wine, and ordered a cheese board because, honestly, cheese was the only thing on our minds. Boonville sits about 115 miles north of San Francisco, tucked among vineyards, redwoods, and small-town farmland. This whole stretch feels like a little slice of heaven. Stepping onto the property, it reminded me of a European farmstead. What makes Pennyroyal so special is that everything you taste comes directly from this land: goats, sheep, gardens, vineyards, cheese, wine - all feeding into each other on the same 66-acre ecosystem. Nothing is outsourced. They're open daily, and you can grab a table overlooking the vineyards or wander over to meet the animals and the people behind your very happy stomach. If you're exploring California's North Coast, this place belongs on your list.

Great for kids, even the younger kids won't complain about the walk and the animals are exciting for them. Following the farm tour was the wine and cheese tasting, which was excellent of course. There are many great wineries in this area and the wine was good, but the specialty is on the cheese. The cheese was amazing! They offer a limited food menu (think heavy snacks or appetizers rather than a full meal) and the food was also excellent. Plenty of space for the kids to run around. At my next visit I'm bringing an ice cooler so that we can take cheese to-go for home enjoyment. Overall this is a delightful and kid-friendly wine and cheese tasting and I look forward to my next visit.

What an awesome place! After a really disappointing stop at Point Reyes Cheese, this place…read moreredeemed the day and made us forget about the other place almost immediately. Great cheeses, samples, deals, a beautiful spot to enjoy our cheeses, breads, wines and chocolates and more. The wonderful lady behind the cheese counter was brilliant. She shared here likes and combos and just was so pleasant! We probably spent 2x more than we intended because of her! They provide a frozen ice pack to take your goodie home with you (the other place had nothing). We camped out a lot a picnic table enjoying the scenery and animals. Highly recommend for a wonderful picnic or lazy day.

The shop also sells local sausages, jams, and pate. If you come here, I highly suggest you buy items that are not available at chain stores. Hint: It's usually cheaper at the chain stores. For example, one petit wheel of Brie is $7.99 here vs. four petit wheels (Triple Creme, Truffle Triple Creme, Breakfast, and Camembert) at Costco is only $14.74. I like their Truffle Triple Creme the best. On our latest visit, they were showcasing their Supreme Brie, which contains even more cream than their Triple Creme Brie. I didn't think that level of cream was necessary. We ended up picking up a brined Brie called Golden Gate; the brininess added more flavor to their already flavorful Brie. If you are here during lunch time, be sure to order a toasted sandwich. We got the three-cheese toastie and it was delicious. We also got a pesto chicken sandwich and the chicken was very flavorful. After lunch, we got the Straus soft-serve -- we can definitely taste the remarkably fresh cream. There are picnic tables with bathrooms near a nice pond on-site. My only gripe about this place is that the picnic tables are dirty with lots of bird poop. The outdoor bathrooms are dirty too; one unit did not even have toilet paper. It doesn't seem like the outdoor areas are regularly cleaned and maintained (1 star off). The view is beautiful. I would definitely spend more time here if the outdoor premises are cleaner.
