Ken even had other subcontractors come out to ensure that we had the best estimate for the work. They kept us in the loop, cleaned up at the end of the day, and always demonstrated a high level of professionalism (i.e., early/on time, respectful, reliable, etc.), which made them stand out compared to all the other contractors we contacted. The only downside was the cost relative to other contractors. However, as newbie homeowners we've learned that the contractor fees tend to be higher in Ann Arbor. Although, we feel that the fee was well worth it in the end because of their stellar work. The bathroom previously was a room to avoid, and a space that we didn't use. We chose to go with HCW for a kitchen and basement remodel after several meetings…read morewith them, they seemed very knowledgeable and they were a veteran owned company which was important to us. We were quickly concerned about our choice after we gave them 2/3 of the estimate up front, they came and did part of the demo the first day then did not come back again for 3 days, and that type of schedule continued. They had a section in their contract stating they could not be required to be at a job everyday, we questioned that they said it was just to avoid people requiring they work nights and weekends, they promised us they would focus on our job and not sandwich us between jobs, but the reality is they never showed up more than 2 days a week. They also did structural work in our kitchen and did not pull a permit, yet they charged us for the permit. They told us our entire sub floor had to be rebuilt and they charged us almost $7k for that, however, the building inspector said the work was not required the floor was fine the way it was. The small amount of work they did was subpar, even as bad as building an island and all of the nails on the bottom of the island did not actually go into a piece of wood. They had weekly excuses about why they could not show up, down to the last one that put us over the edge..."it is Indigenous Peoples Day so we won't be working...". This company is the stereotypical nightmare contractor, they got away with over $15,000 of our money that they did not work for, that is painful, but I believe we would be in worst shape if we would have continued through the end of the project with them. No sign of the honor or integrity you would expect from a Veteran owned company.

He's also a total pleasure to work with--incredibly nice guy and very helpful and informative. His crews are the nicest people to have working in your home. Hamilton Building put a second floor addition on our home, a back room off the kitchen, and recently remodeled our entire kitchen, and got it done in the time they estimated. All the work is first rate. I cannot recommend them highly enough.
