My son is into contact sports but small framed compared to some of the kids he plays against. After looking into other ways to help him build physical and mental strength for his primary sport, I suggested he try BJJ. He took an interest after visiting another school which was too far away to make the classes. I found Elevated Studious only a few minutes away and he gave the class a try. The class we observed was lightly attended and my son was at the upper end of size and age it seemed so I decided to keep looking into other options. He kept asking if he was going back to BJJ so we took him for the free session. I was surprised to watch my son struggle and tap out against some of the smaller, younger, but more experienced boys and girls in the class. Classes are much more heavily attended then the first we observed, we must have been on a slow night. But even the smaller classes are great.
Stephen does a great job at breaking down and explaining the moves. Each class starts out by working on a move with no resistance, then builds to sparring. Stephen reinforces developing the technique, which when done properly, gives the advantage to the experienced combatant vs the larger less experienced, as I've witnessed. The sparring is very physical and demanding. Proper technique is reinforced constantly. Stephen reiterates many of the strategies used in other sports such as, taking away time and space and proper technique. BJJ has a much greater relationship other sports than I could have imagined. I can only say I wish we looked into this sooner. It is a great compliment to other sports and also prepares the student for those unfortunate scenarios in life that we hope to avoid but often cannot. read more
