Fall flavors

Coffee with a Purpose is how I would describe Eleos. I absolutely just love this place. I'm new to the area and stumbled upon them and can't get enough. The staff is always really friendly and it's nice place to sit and work. I love that they have different flavors to choose from for the coffee. They make their syrups in house and they're never too sweet, so I get a good balance of flavor and coffee neither overpowers the other. They even have pastries and sandwiches to choose from. Shameless plug they even have 10 am bible study Tuesday to Saturday They are a Christian based ministries share a building with refugee kc. ( I believe I spelled this correctly) I love that they want to spread the word and care about people spiritually and mentally. This will forever be a go to.

I had mixed feelings about my first visit to Eleos Coffee a few years back. I truly appreciated that it was an independant shop in a neighborhood that could certainly use a caffeine option other than 7-11; and it was a quirky rehab of an older building and not in a cookie cutter stripmall. As an atheist it did give me pause to support a business that used outward religious beliefs in their business model. My second visit last week was part of the spring 2024 Caffeine Crawl. I along with 18 others were treated to an overview of the business, sampled 3 of their in-house roasted drip offerings, sampled the best damn brownie ever, played a contest to guess the products by taste, took home a free bag of beans, chatted with the owner and head roaster, and witnessed a worship service in the back parking lot. Has my cynical opinion softened? Yes! After seeing first hand how they are delivering a positive impact on a neighborhood overrun with crime and homelessness and not shipping profits to a corporate headquarters out of state, I can overlook my personal religious views (or lack of) and eagerly offer a full hearted Amen! Afterall they are not a government entity, not forcing anyone into the shop or into their belief system and are genuinely good people doing more positives for this great city than I am. I will stop anytime that I'm in the area and hoist a delicious cup and break bread with some cool people working at making a difference in their community.

Love coming to this place, I usually just get an espresso with some syrup added I believe I got one that had cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg. It was so good it tasted like a hug in a mug. I also got the cinnamon roll and it was delicious

I was recommended to try their coffee by the barista from another coffee shop. And it is so true! Eleos has great coffee! I had latte to go, 16oz one, and the coffee scent was strong, it has a tiny bit sourness which is unique to some type of coffee bean. And the milk kind of balanced the coffee. They offer really fair price for the quality coffee, and they created a really cozy/warm environment inside of the shop. One bug is that they tried to give the customer a warm feeling when they are in the shop, but the outside, this shop gave me a cold and suspicious feeling because the window has the bars, and everything was like shielded. Maybe because they have to due to the location and the neighborhood? I felt guarded when I get off my car just within the short distance to the coffee shop. Because every store on that street are some kind of bared and shielded. The parking is another issue for people like me who came from outside of the neighborhood. It could get more attention if the location is more welcoming. I still highly recommend to pay it a visit, try their coffee!

We were finally in the area and jumped at the chance to try out Eleos. I had to compare places but it reminds me of PT's, PH and Splitlog. It has that everyone knows your name at home feel. They are dedicated to great coffee and service and they execute it beautifully. A true hidden gem. You are in a very heavy populated homeless area and you have to understand that and accept it. You are safe and no one bothers you. Eleos employees make sure of that. Coffee is smooth and they offer almond or coconut milk options. They also have a few hot breakfast menu items and some pastries.

If you want the Starbucks environment this is the place! The coffee is really good plus the biscuits and gravy is a really good size portion! The employee even brought the food over to the table!

I had a great first time experience here! Eleos has been on my list for a long time now so I was very excited to see them open back up after they have been closed due to COVID. I almost got my usual vanilla latte but saw that they had horchata, so I had to have that instead! Any time horchata is offered, I'm down! And I'm glad I did because it was amazing!!! With a shot of espresso of course! I feel like that are a lot of different hidden gems down Independence Avenue and this is definitely one of them! Their space space is really open and the customer service is friendly! If you like a lot of lighting, there's window seating that brings in good natural lighting! I will definitely be adding Eleos to my list if places to recommend and revisit!

This morning I felt like escaping the inevitable hipster 20/30-something headphone plugged-in crowd with laptops jamming ever freaking conceivable table at my favorite "near downtown" coffee shop and opted for something different. Boy, did I succeed. Take a drive on the wild side, down Independence Avenue east of downtown, the part of town Yelpers avoid. Certainly the only coffee-house style joint in this area that can whip up an espresso. While the decor screams Restaurant Impossible candidate, the food and coffee is very good. The house latte is a monster served in a very tall, large, pre-heated ceramic mug that keep it warm far beyond anticipated. A breakfast wrap was freshly prepared (hot) and served with a nice sweet marmalade style dipping sauce that was a nice addition to the breakfast. Came with a side. I chose an apple which I thought unusual, and it happened to be a great one. If you come, you should know: - South Johnson County residents, you will be uncomfortable here. You know why. - Wireless available and it's surprisingly quite fast. Phone number is the password. - Parking available in the rear of the building if the front of the street is filled. - No hipster barista or customer vibe here. Nada, missing. - They'll do the Frappe/Crappe thing for those of you on coffee training wheels. - The chances of getting exceptional Mexican food within 400 yards: 100% certainty. - People coming in are getting addressed by their first names. - Good customer service is visible. Food: solid 4 stars Coffee: 3.5 stars Interior vibe: 1.5 stars Cleanliness: 4 stars

Coffee cake!

Could this place be any cuter! We live in historic northeast and these little shops up and down the ave are the reason we love this area! We saw some of the yelp reviews and photos on here and literally did this place no justice because they have since updated their decor since those last images! We ordered a French vanilla iced coffee, Mexican hot cocoa, and two coffee cakes. The iced coffee was delicious I felt like I was literally sucking on a coffee bean you could actually taste the flavor and it wasn't overpowered by the cream. The Mexican hot cocoa was NOTHING as expected it had a spicy kick to it! The freaking coffee cake though... AMAZING it had soo many delicious things going on you will just have to take my word on it and try it! Will def be going back soon!

Ethiopian pour over and... work
Ruth N.

A Christian coffee house in the middle of northeast Kansas City, where hangout spots are few and far between. I got the Ethiopian pour over, and it was delicious! The staff is so friendly and nice, greeting everyone that walked in on a first-name basis. The building has many rooms, where they have bible studies and invite the locals and regulars to come join them. There is a lot of ambient noise, definitely a good place for people watching and eavesdropping.

Another great Historic Northeast business. Y'all make a mean mint mocha (BUZZ). I'll have to stick around and try your breakfast sometime.

Good chai tea latte. Tried the all-american, which I felt could have had more to it, but it was still good.

The reason why I am not giving this place 5 stars is because of the lack of customer service. Both the cashier and barista were not very friendly. They were brisk. I tried to engage in a converation about their pastries and they seemed disinterested and just wanted to move on to taking orders and making drinks. They weren't even busy. I arrived an hour after they opend and the place was 10% full. The food was good. I got the avocado toast and with a littl more salt and hot sauce; it was delicious. The place also smelled amazing. I was engulfed in the aroma of cinnamon, sugar and butter and roasted coffee. I could not have been happier except for the lack of warmth and feeling of connection and a sense of community one often gets in an independent coffee shop. The hot latte I got was good. Oat-milk was $1.25 extra which I thought was a bit steep for Kansas City. But I guess prices/inflation affects us all. The ham and cheese croissant I got was super delicious. It was better than the avocado toast. I would get the croissant again. The rooftop area was a vibe. There were more people up there talking so it had better energy. I think on the first and second floor, most people were just working and on their laptops, so it was overall very quiet.

However, after having spent a fairly small amount of hours eating an alarming amount of BBQ (and ice cream) I just needed a place to sit and digest without eating. My local friend mentioned Thou Mayest as an opportunity to sit for a bit without having to eat. I was looking at their non-coffee options and saw they had a local kombucha on tap, perfect to help with my overstuffed belly. On top of that I did buy a bag of beans; just because I don't drink coffee meant that I didn't have people that enjoy it. More importantly, the kombucha was pretty good and it was nice to sit and relax a little in a pretty cool space. My friend and I had a large space to ourselves near the front hangout area that was like a cross between a outdoor camping space.
