Scent Workshop Galena - Eric, my friends and me.

    Scent Workshop Galena

My husband and I booked the candle making workshop on a Saturday afternoon around 11. It was…read moreabsolutely fantastic! The owner, Bri, was so incredibly friendly and helpful. We really appreciated that she thoroughly explained the process, but made it relaxing and let us work at our own pace! When you are making your candles you can choose from a variety of scents. You are then instructed to make 3 different scent options. Your nose will tell you which one you like best! She was then so helpful to get the wax melted for us and we poured our own candles. It takes about an hour for them to set once poured. However, Bri, was more than ok with us continuing to walk around Main st while the candles set. One tip we thought was awesome was, she held onto our "scent recipes" and once our creations burn out we can always reach back out to have more of our scent creations created. This would be the perfect activity for a weekend with friends, a bachelorette party, or just a cute activity with your someone special!

Eric was so knowledgeable, helpful and patient in helping us create the perfect candle scent, the French way. Be aware that candies need some setting up time before taking them home. I recommend starting your Galena trip here and then go have lunch and/or a stroll in the city before returning to pick up the lovely packaged candle and/or perfume! I really enjoyed hearing the French music in the background as it helped create the perfect atmosphere. This is a great place to gather, have some fun together and create wonderful memories with a souvenir to take home! I highly recommend this place!

You should stop in! Yelp, I wish you'd get the address correct so next time I stop I can check in! As it is, it has this shop existing about 7 miles west, so when one is standing in the store it says I'm too far away. Darnit! The woman who was working--ostensibly the owner--was so friendly immediately upon walking in that I felt like she really enjoyed just having customers walk around and visit. She chatted with me as I walked through the store (jamming to the Earth, Wind, and Fire she had playing; man they just make me want to move). There's an eclectic mix of goodies here. Lots of wind chimes, wall art, glass artwork, jewelry. I was able to avoid picking up additional rings, and got a few chains for some a few pendants that I have but haven't been able to wear since I don't have a necklace for them. I also appreciated that she helped me think about how I could find similar stores, giving me a couple of keywords to use when looking, since I often struggle to find the type of sterling and gemstone jewelry I like. If (probably when) I visit Galena again I will be stoping at Nature's Treasures. I probably wouldn't have stopped here without others on Yelp mentioning it so thanks folks! It's a cute store and I'm sure I don't need the future rings I'll eventually buy from here.

McCoy Jeweler - vintage & floral engagement rings

    McCoy Jeweler

I had a deeply disappointing experience with McCoy Jewelers that I feel compelled to share,…read moreespecially for anyone considering them for something as costly and meaningful as an engagement or wedding ring. After reading yelp reviews, I was drawn to them based on the reviews and them being a small business and operating since 1973 I took in my late father's vintage wedding band to have it resized so I could wear it. The original size was 10.75, and they measured my finger at a small of 9.25--a reduction of 1.5 sizes. They quoted me $250 for the job, with half due upfront. The technicians were articulate and displayed skill. I trusted their expertise and left the ring in their care. When I picked up the ring, it felt uncomfortably tight. Their response was simply, "Give it a few weeks." As time went on, the ring became so tight I couldn't wear it at all. When I returned, they insisted the work was done correctly at the time and blamed my finger for supposedly changing size. They offered no solution, only excuses. I asked them to resize it to a 9.5 or 9.75 so I could wear it. The refused. When I tried to discuss my concerns, the owner dismissed me with condescending double talk, suggesting I was just a difficult customer because I hadn't worn jewelry before. I felt insulted and taken advantage of. To add insult to injury, they kept the gold removed from my ring during resizing. For a typical men's gold band, reducing by 1.5 sizes removes about 1.2 to 1.5 grams of gold--worth roughly $120 to $150 at current prices. Ethical jewelers follow the practice of returning this gold to the customer, but McCoy's did not. Instead, they kept it, likely to resell or reuse, which felt dishonest and exploitative. It's important to mention that getting engaged and dealing with expensive and meaningful jewelry for a lifetime is already a stressful time. You need to be able to trust the people you're working with. Unfortunately, McCoy Jewelers only made the process more stressful and left me with a bad taste. Eventually, I had the ring properly resized at a reputable jeweler in Chicago for $85, and now it fits perfectly every day irrespective of the time of day, the weather, or my body temperature. In summary: McCoy Jewelers overcharged, kept my gold, failed to stand by their work, and treated me poorly. I support local businesses whenever I can, but I cannot recommend this one. My experience shows that, at McCoy's, the customer is definitely not always right.
