This is one that I drive by all of the time, but usually on Sunday's when they are closed. So I made sure to prioritize this taco crawl on a Saturday. I ordered a beef, chorizo and carnitas. All were a solid 3 to 4-stars. To be honest, it was my least favorite spot of the day, but certainly not bad - the other two were just really great. So this summer, I made sure to visit right before the buzzer: we went on the very last day they were open. But they were definitely not just winding down for their last few hours - it was like a party here. When I first walked up, I was told by a very enthusiastic, and very out of breath girl, that I could play against one of the staff members in a game of pickleball or connect 4 and win a free snow cone. I had my son with me and couldn't really lose sight of him while involved in a competitive pickleball game, so they suggested connect 4. They even gave my son something to color while I played. Well, I blew the game and lost. But they still gave me a free shaved ice anyway. And by the way, it was awesome. I will definitely not be waiting until the last day of summer to visit next year. They have approximately 487 flavor options and they use blue bell ice cream if you so choose to add that. We sat at a picnic table and went to town on our deliciousness as we watched people playing games, listening to music and living their best summer lives. My first thought was, "Wait... inside the gas station?" But listen... don't let that fool you. The first thing I noticed was how clean everything was. The gas station itself was spotless, and Angel's Kitchen looked practically brand new. The setup was fresh, organized, and gave off the feeling of a business still in its early stages but trying to do things right. The menu had more variety than I expected too--cheesesteak subs, cold subs, burgers, fries, and Italian ice. I ordered the turkey sub and a small pineapple Italian ice. They were out of almost half of the Italian ice flavors, which was a little disappointing, but that pineapple flavor absolutely delivered. It was cold, refreshing, and exactly what I needed in that Texas heat. Now the ordering process was a little different. They currently handwrite your order on a Post-it note, then you take it to the gas station register to pay, get it stamped, and bring it back. They do have a POS system at the counter, so I'm guessing they're still getting everything fully up and running. Growing pains happen. As far as service goes, the staff was cool. The young cashier seemed like she was probably still learning the ropes and maybe in training, but she was pleasant. There was another gentleman there who carried himself with the confidence of someone who might be the owner, and overall the interaction felt welcoming. Now for the food: I haven't eaten the turkey sub yet, but presentation matters--and this thing looked GOOD. Honestly, it looked better than a lot of sandwiches I've gotten from some of the bigger chain sub shops. Fresh ingredients, packed nicely, and definitely not thrown together carelessly. They also had a few seats inside--about four spots--so if you wanted to stop in for lunch and actually sit and eat, you could. Overall, I'll definitely be back.
