a menu for a mexican restaurant
Gregg P.

Well we have eaten here a long time ago and thought the food was pretty good.. we went there and was busy. Our waitress seemed to be bothered at times, like we were a bother. Their salsa is very good, though. I Never got a refill on my water, even asked when she brought my wife her soda refill. Food had a bland taste to it. I threw some of the salsa on my chicken soft tacos and added some flavor. Rice and the beans were actually burnt and crispy, probably under a heat lamp too long. So wasn't too happy with lunch.

Mexican dinner special.

After our dinner the other night I had to write a review update and add a star. El Toro has taken it up a notch over the last few months. Not only is the food really good, they serve a lot of it. There is no way that you can't leave here not full. I had the monterey dinner and it was yummy. Unfortunately they do not have a liquor license so they cannot sell margaritas. They do have a license for beer and wine though. For those who are being cautious, they are following covid prevention at this restaurant. Everyone was wearing masks, tables were sanitized between customers, and social distancing is set up throughout the restaurant.

Chicken Enchildas and Mexican Rice
Amy P.

Let me start by saying this is by far the best Mexican food in Alachua and in Gainesville, when it used to have two locations in town!! As an avid Mexican eater this place is unlike any other. The salsa is simply the best I've EVER tested and made fresh in house. I currently live outside the Gainesville area, but make a point to go whenever I'm in town. Follow eating tips below. 1. Get at least one cup of salsa for each person at the table. You might call me crazy but this stuff goes fast. Eat it with chips and dip, top on your Mexican rice, or dump it all over your cheesy chicken enchiladas (that's what the pros do anyways) 2. Order two chicken enchildas with white sauce (as the come - red if your traditional with your Mexican food) and add a side of Mexican rice. 3. Feeling outside of the box: try beef and bean burrito with red sauce, fajita quesadilla, or shredded beef soft tacos. However, just trying to emphasize they have the best white cream sauce unlike any restaurant so might as well get something with it. 4. Enjoy!! I could eat this food multiple times/day it is that good. The environment is not your typical Mexican environment, but the employees are extremely nice and always recognize us Mexican food lovers. Last tips: you can buy their salsa online and they will ship it!! Not as good as the fresh stuff but better than store bought salsa. I don't believe they serve alcohol so drink up your appetite before. And lastly, they are open during this COVID-19 craziness. My family has ordered it once a week during the social distancing and it's still as good in house

Chicken burrito...Spanish rice and refried beans... Excellent
Lee D.

I got a chicken and a Beef burrito with Spanish rice and refried beans. It was good I must say it was really good. The salsa was really good they didn't overdo it with the lime like most places and the tortilla chips were perfect. The food was great I got a takeout order I would also like to add that they had A recyclable container which was aluminum with a paper cover. I give extra points and plus plus for that that shows that they care I want a business cares they care about the food also.Definitely recommended.

We had planned on going to a popular Korean restaurant in town but they were short-staffed and…read morebarely acknowledged as we came through the door, so we left and decided to come here instead. Nice save. Parking when they're busy is a bit much but we found a spot around the corner from the door and walked to the entrance. You walk through their outside dining area which is all covered but because it had just rained it was a bit muggy for us so we opted to sit inside. The place has multiple floors and I really like that set up. We were sat upstairs on the second floor right by the top of the stairs. Looking around you can see another floor with a reserved area, tvs showing sports, and their salsa bar, more on that later. No chips and salsa here. Chips and Charro Bean Dip. The beans tasted refried and charred if that makes sense. I lost at rock, paper, scissors so I had to go visit the salsa bar and bring back dips to try. They had some pretty good ones like their homemade chipotle dressing, salsa verde, salsa de molcajete, etc. There wasn't one that we didn't like. Our server was really great and took care of us well. I got a Tamarindo Margarita and to eat the Enchiladas Poblanas (chicken enchiladas with mole sauce, queso fresco, raw onions) with the normal side of refried beans and rice, lettuce, tomato, sour cream, and guac. I got a side of extra cheese because I'm a little rat and dumped it on them. The mole sauce really hit the spot. The last time I had it the sauce was kinda bland but this gave such a nice sweet and earthy flavor. He got the Molcajete Azteca (lava rock bowl with char-grilled chicken, steak, chorizo, shrimp, queso fresco, grilled cactus, onions, avocados, serrano peppers, pork rinds), same sides as my dish. He ''Oooh-ed" and "Ahhh-ed" and "Oh my God, this is so good" so you know he was a happy guy. I can see what all the hype is about. Definitely a place to visit.

We got a seat inside away from the noise, oddly enough in about the same place as we almost always have gotten in this restaurant. I went for a burrito, which is also my standard. It was just as good this time around as it was the last time, and the service was still just as solid. Really, for this kind of Mexican food in Gainesville, this is one of the best places to go as far as I am concerned. We will be returning in the future.

Our server was Brandon, who was an absolute delight! He was so energetic, so friendly, and gave great suggestions. We started with drinks. I had a skinny margarita and my husband had a Frida (top shelf margarita) and our son had a Coke. First thing we ordered was the chips and salsa. The chips were perfect, not too thin and not too thick. They came with two salsas. Both were tasty. Not sure if there is a spicier option but we will check next time. I ordered the Birria tacos. They were so delicious! So much flavor! The avocado tomatillo salsa was perfect with it. My husband ordered the Al Pastor tacos. It was very traditional Al pastor. He loved the black beans. His words were " these are the best black beans I have ever had!" Our son ordered the chorizo tacos. First, I have never seen chorizo tacos offered in a Mexican restaurant. Secondly, they were amazing! To finish, I ordered the banana pudding and our son ordered the churro sundae. Both desserts were delicious. The portions were huge! All in all I say Nopal is quite the gem. Perfect portions and dishes that are packed with flavor. And service that goes above and beyond. We can't wait to go back. We will ask for Brandon!!!

We've always…read moreenjoyed eating at El Patio, and it's been one of our family's favorite places to visit whenever we're in High Springs. Unfortunately, after our experience yesterday, it will likely be our last visit. Our server was kind, attentive, and did exactly what she should have done. At the beginning of our meal, I clearly informed her that my mother has a severe, anaphylactic seafood allergy and that extra care needed to be taken to avoid any cross-contamination. She acknowledged it and noted it with our order. Partway through the meal, my mother asked if I thought there was shrimp in her food because she believed she had tasted it. There was only one bite left, so my husband ate it to check--and it was indeed shrimp. Because my mother has a life-threatening seafood allergy, every minute matters when it comes to preventing a serious reaction. I immediately notified our server, who handled the situation professionally and went to get the manager. Unfortunately, the manager's response was one of the most disappointing customer service experiences I've ever had. Instead of asking if my mother was okay or apologizing for what had happened, his first response was to ask whether we had "proof" there was shrimp in the dish. Since the food had already been eaten, of course there wasn't a piece left to show him. When I asked if he genuinely believed we were making this up, he nodded and said he "kind of" thought we were lying because "this happens all the time." Being accused of lying while dealing with a potential anaphylactic reaction was unacceptable. Food allergies are not inconveniences; they can be life-threatening. Luckily I had Benadryl on me to help sustain the reaction until we got home to give her further care. This review is ultimately about food safety and management. Restaurants have a responsibility to take allergy notifications seriously, and managers should know how to respond with empathy, professionalism, and concern when something goes wrong. Instead, we were met with accusations and disbelief. I also requested the owner's contact information, and initially no one was willing to provide it. Thankfully, our server eventually did. It's incredibly disappointing because we've loved El Patio for years. Sadly, this experience has completely changed how we view the restaurant. I sincerely hope ownership addresses both the kitchen's allergy procedures and the management training surrounding food allergies and customer care, because the next family may not be as fortunate

I also tried the al pastor, and it was incredible. Tender, juicy, with that perfect hint of sweetness and char that makes al pastor unforgettable. You can taste the love and intention in every bite.
