I wish I could review the food. In fact we picked this place out on the way between NYC to Chicago since we can't find this style of Mexican food anywhere near NY and went out of our way to stop. But this one star review is for the lack of customer service and specifically the young woman working the front on 11/20/22. We arrived at 8:45 when Yelp, Google and other places all said this restaurant is open. Two other people arrive around the same time. Others had been recently seated at the bar and were ordering. Everyone was told the kitchen was closed. Knowing how rapid-fire these style of restaurants are, there's no reason to have been denying seating a full hour and 15 before stated closing. Then the woman at the front desk decided to get angry at us for asking if we can be seated. When I directly asked "then can you explain why literally everything in front of me says 10pm?" she got defensive and said I was "yelling" at her and refused to answer anything or make eye contact. I wasn't even close to raising my voice, just asking for an answer. Two other parties waiting to be seated were ignored too. I also couldn't figure out why the Black soldier who arrived before us wasn't even acknowledged even when he asked and left without anyone saying anything to him. On our way out, he looked at my wife and I and said "you guys aren't from around here are you?" with a smile, then went on to hint that both the closing on a whim and the quiet racism was very common in this part of town. I cannot believe how great the food is here. Place was nicely busy on a sunny Sunday afternoon, when most other restaurants were closed for the day or close to empty. So, people round these parts are supporting a quality spot. No issues with this being a hidden gem that closes due to lack of interest. Gonna add some pix, but, friendly service. Good menu choices. Over the last year, my husband and I have slowly been migrating from our "favorite Mexican restaurant" to El Torero. Their new restaurant on Elm Rd is awesome. It's not your typical Mexican decor of sombreros, suns, Modelo & Corona bottles hanging from the ceiling. It has beautiful dark wood and stacked stone with the illusion of being under an evening sky. They have a private room and separate bar. On to the food- their food has seemed to get better but I'm still not a fan of their seafood tacos or enchiladas. Their margaritas are the bomb. They aren't just a dose of frozen mix with a shot of tequila on the top. They are from scratch from the get go. Their camerones a la mexicano are good as are the other shrimp dinners. Great service and excellent food. We've been going too often and I don't regret it. The hook is certainly the menu size, because it could take you forever to try it all. You get a ton of food for a great price, so often you end up with two or three meals. The salsa is hit or miss, but it's not my main draw, so eh. There is no happy medium; it's either eat the whole jug or tomato puree. My homemade refried beans are amazing, but don't come close to el torero; I've stopped trying. The food is good here. The service is nice, friendly, and attentive. No complaints from me. But the thing these guys do better than any other Mexican restaurant in the area is the Chile Relleno. Every other place I've ever had the Rellano uses a batter that tastes overly-eggy. And that's just not appealing when you try to eat it. Stopped by El Torero Mexican restaurant wasn't sure about the place but here goes another review, rainy out and after lunch on a Saturday. Looked like a old Wendy's that went out of business converted to a Mexican style. Looks like they had plenty staff at hand seated quickly and ordered a un-sweet tea which wasn't bad at all chips were great , loved the little container of sauce they bring out pour your own , very tasty of course. Ordered the the Chimi Trio that comes with rice salad, guacamole. Side order of chicken taco, Food came all came out hot and well presented . I have to say the food was Very good for the price, and to tell you the truth I would of paid more it was so good. I have No complaints except that the waiter never came back to ask how everything was or if I needed anything, until it was bill time. That was the only down fall. Over all I would go back any day to eat there and recommend it anytime.. I give it all stars, cause price and quality and over look the waiter problem , maybe it was just a off day for him. Went to dinner tonight and had the worst "Mexican" food ever. The food arrived maybe 3 minutes after we ordered...meaning nothing is made fresh. Out of 5 dinners, zero were truly hot. The kids didn't care but the adult meals were lukewarm at best. I ordered the enchiladas and the tortillas weren't even cooked... greasy and floppy instead. Flavorless enchilada sauce. I asked for cheese sauce and more water, neither of which ever came. They took my meal off the bill, but everything was truly bad. We are never coming back again. read more

We were at the Warren location. We should have left right after we were served stale chips and salsa that was mostly tomato sauce. I ordered the enchiladas verdes. At least that is what I thought I ordered. My enchiladas were buried under shredded lettuce and a gob of guacamole. I had to remove it to find the dry enchiladas wrapped with old corn tortillas and a very small amount of verde sauce and cheese. My husband's fajita texanas were tasty but the tortillas were old and cracked, beans were a mush on a separate plate and inedible. Will we go back - nope. We stopped because of the reviews on Yelp and regret the stop. read more

Oh my goodness WHY has it taken us so long to try this place?!?! Sheer stupidity is my only explanation because plenty of people told us to come but we just got around to it! It's now in our list of go to places. The atmosphere is crazy funky with all sorts of bright Mexican decor and while it is very small we have never had not had an issue getting a table - even during a busy lunch shift. The staff is also small so I will say they are kind of slow at times but they make sure the food is fresh and hot and they are very friendly so that's a plus. The food itself is amazing. My current favorite is their bean nachos. Fresh chips slathered in the most wonderful refried beans I have ever tasted with a mild white cheese sauce on top - absolutely great! The beans are so fresh and thick not runny like many places. I can make a meal off of an order... and that's a whopping $3.99 talk about money saver! Cha-Ching!!! Cannot wait to try more of their menu! I really hate we have not tried them sooner. Take it from me if you like Mexican then you need to go here - don't keep putting it off like I did - it's too damn good! read more

The food isn't bad. There's a waiter who will follow your wife into the parking lot, though. They should go through some sort of training.

This place used to be great when they were in the little building down the road. Since they've moved into the bigger building (in the old Ground Round location), we have had nothing but horrible experiences. We went when they first opened and were ignored, so we left. The second time, we had the misfortune of being waited on by one particular server who has a terrible attitude. Anyone who goes here regularly probably knows exactly which one he is. We went today and decided we will NEVER be back. They were somewhat busy, but nothing extreme, so there is no excuse for what we saw. There were multiple places on the floor in the dining area where food had spilled. Rather than clean it up, they placed wet floor signs near the messes. Next to our table, there was an overflowing cart full of dirty dishes. The didn't move it the entire time we were there, but kept piling on more dirty plates and cups. My glass had a chunk of onion stuck to the inside (like cooked on from high heat in the wash). The couple next to us got up and left after quietly making a complaint (which I am going to guess had something to do with the lack of cleanliness...the looks on their faces were that of disgust). Nobody cleaned off the food from their table for about a half hour. The bathroom was clean, which I found shocking. I'd have rather eaten my dinner in there because the amount of slime and grime in the dining area was barf worthy. On top of all of this, the quality of their food has also suffered. I ordered what was my favorite meal at the old location (enchiladas rancheras), which used to have slow cooked, shredded pork on top. The pork today was just some dry, crusty pork chunks...definitely not the delicious shredded pork I love. I'll never be back. I don't think the Cortland location has the same issues, but I plan to stay away from there as the money is going to the same place. This restaurant needs to be investigated by the health department. Best Mexican restaurant in town. I lived in Texas for 30 years but this place has the best refried beans I've ever had. I've had many dishes here. The menu is massive. They put a lot of veggies in the dishes which you don't get in a Texas but I like veggies so it's ok by me. If you order a quesadilla and expect something like you get at Taco Bell you will be freaked out by the size. It's HUGE. My mom who has never been to a Mexican restaurant took it down. She ate on that thing for 3 days. The bar is big and beautiful. It's usually not crowded in the bar so you can always get a seat. They have like 8 different flavors of frozen margaritas. I recently have moved here from California and tonight was craving some Mexican food. Now, from the Central Valley of California, I feel that nothing can beat Bobby Salazar's (a local chain). However, I was pleasantly surprised. My wife had the chimichanga plate and I had enchilada platter. Both were very tasty, however, seemed to be lacking some quality I haven't quite placed my finger or palate upon. The price was very reasonable and the chips they delivered with dinner were very tasty and not too salty. The portions were large and we brought home enough to enjoy it for lunch tomorrow. read more

I'm definitely a fan of this place. I'm hispanic so I'm used to a different style of cooking and while it's not my mom's cooking it is very good. My absolute favorite is their white cheese dip for their chips and their chicken nachos. AWESOME! After that they have the Warren Special which is chicken AND steak with rice, beans, pico de gallo, and tortillas. Pricier at close to $10 but hey it's steak. The only thing I ever ate there that I hated (and I like Taco Bell's better) was their tacos! Absolutely disgusting, flavorless, and the beef looked like grayish canned dog food. But one bad dish won't change my stand on this place! Oh as for the waiters/waitresses...they are nice enough.
