This place is amazing. It was close to closing time but they stayed open so I could get something to eat and opened up the bar so I could have something to drink and enjoy my food. The staff goes out of the way to make sure you have a great dining experience even though they want to go home but they think of the customers first. I was here when the place first opened. Cant't remember what I had back then, but remember I thought...meh...it's ok. Haven't been compelled to go back. Decided to try it again tonight since I was craving some Mexican food. In the several years since I've last tried their food, it's...still...just ok. The chips and salsa were good. Salsa had a nice little spicy hot kick to it, but not overly spicy hot. The seafood enchiladas were just meh. They weren't terrible. But there was nothing particularly memorable about them either. The shrimp and krab were both chopped up finely, kinda like the stuff you find in can can at the grocery store. Mediocre taste. Called multiple restaurants this Saturday with a party for 15 looking for seating. No one had enough room to accommodate our party. We happened upon Plaza agave because they could take a party our size. I was leery as we arrived as it didn't appear nearly as busy as the rest of the local restaurants. To my surprise they did not disappoint. The server was wonderful, she was nice and attentive. The food is probably hands down the best Mexican food I've had to date. The prices are a bit higher than their competitors but it was worth the extra money. The atmosphere is calm and feels more private which we loved. The strawberry margaritas where also fantastic. Honestly, the place was just downright dirty. I used the restroom and in the hallway before you even got to the restroom it smelled like unclean toilets. Then, when we got our food, we started noticing small flies appearing trying get at our food. More and more kept coming and we were constantly swatting them away. Now, I've been in the south during the summer and have had this issue, but this is north eastern Ohio in the dead of winter. If you've got fruit flies like that, you're just plain not cleaning. On the plus, if you risk it, the food was pretty tasty, I'll give them that. For Groupon Users: Just a forewarning, you do have to get 2 soft drinks apparently when you use the Groupon. Guacamole made at table side is without a doubt the best in the tri state area and has my highest recommendation. Choose from mild, medium or hot as they prepare it to your liking. Meals are consistent, my family has their go-to favorites but we still try new items. The staff are friendly and attentive. You can eat in the bar area, the restaurant or the side patio. I consider the meal prices to be average, they have daily specials and also a lunch menu. In the area for work and decided to try this place out. There was 4 of us and brought our appetites. The waitress was great, she seemed new and not as knowledgeable about the menu but not a big deal because she was nice and attentive. Chips and salsa were fine, the entrees were a mixed bag. The quesadilla and enchiladas were your basic Mexican restaurant variety dishes and had plenty of meat and cheese to boot. I order 3 beef tacos expecting beef strips in an authentic fashion. Nope! Boiled, watery, and flavorless ground beef mush. It looked like deviled meat. The taco came with lettuce and very little shredded cheese. I asked for some pico de Gallo on the side. I got a tiny bowl's worth and was charged 3 dollars......... the tacos were not hardly edible. I only had enough pico de Gallo to put on 2 tacos, which was fine because the 3rd taco suffered from a case of waterlogged corn totilla-itis. It was soggy and mush, no longer able to qualify as a taco. I don't tent to be this harsh, but it's a stinkin taco; I would have considered 3 hard shell Taco Bell tacos a pleasant surprise compared to what I got. I don't care if it's Taco Bell or in Mexico, I've never met a taco, burrito, chips and salsa, chile relleno, rice and beans, or queso that I didn't want to snuggle, at least for a few moments. But the truth is, it all tastes, basically, the same. The spices can excite or be bland, but we all can picture what a quesadilla looks like, because it looks the same at every Mexican Restaurant, Fajitas are pretty standard. The tostada, is a tostada. Mexican Restaurants have mastered the ability to take the same 8 ingredients and arrange them into about 400 different dishes. And I love them for it. Plaza Azteca is no different in this area. Everything I have eaten has been delicious and familiar. The tableside guac is tasty, the chips are crispy. I think one of the places where Mexican restaurants can vary greatly is in their rice and bean offerings. Often, they thrive at one and fail at the other. PA does an admirable job at providing two palatable sides that neither offend or overwhelm the dishes. But, they do something that makes the entire experience magnificent: They SHINE with their Margaritas. They are strong, sweet, fresh, and CHEAP. This is a fairly large restaurant across the road from the mall and had good ratings when I searched on Yelp (from the mall parking lot). It was pretty empty, being in between lunch and dinner times, and we were seated in a booth right away. Our service was consistently good. We were served water and chips & salsa right after we sat down. My chosen entree was fish tacos; there were 3 small ones and came with a separate hot plate of beans and rice. The tacos could have used some kind of sauce, but everything tasted really good. I would come back, and would like to get one of the vegetarian entrees since they all sounded good on the menu. The places we would eat were owned, staffed, and eaten at by mostly people in our Mexican community in Oklahoma. If you are used to good authentic Mexican flavor, this has been the only place we have found it in this area. We have been to over 10 different Mexican restaurants in the Youngstown area and none of which compare. The best items offered are not on the Menu so be sure to ask what else they have to offer. We were looking for tacos Lengua and finally found it. The only thing I wish they did have is Barbacoa. We had tacos asada, pollo, el Pastor, carnitas and chills rellano all of which were very very good. We tried a tamale which had good flavor but was a tad dry and crumbly and the flan was a bit over cooked but once again had a great flavor. read more

Tried this place cause the restaurant we wanted was closed. Being from California I'm all about Mexican food so was excited to try this place. Staff was nice and very helpful, however at one point our waitress was nowhere to be found. I ordered a side of guac and queso! Queso was relish but the guac was bland! Not very tasty. Unfortunately I love guac so that was disappointing. Also got the Land and Sea which was bacon wrapped steak and shrimp. Sad to say but also a little disappointing too. Steak was pretty dry. Was excited to visit this place after seeing all of the reviews. I was highly disappointed. Let me first say that the young lady waiting on us had zero personality. It was sad. I was super friendly, but she didn't smile at all. She had the same stone look on her face the entire time we were there. My wife enjoyed her fajitas...said they had a different flavor than normal fajitas. I got the chicken enchiladas. They weren't inedible or anything, they just completely lacked flavor. I tasted nothing. The guacamole was pretty much tasteless also. Everyone raves about their guac, but I was not impressed. The rice was a little crunchy as well. The refried beans were ok. The inside has never been updated since this building was a Max & Erma's. Felt like I was traveling back in time. I won't be back to this place, and thankfully, I don't live in that area. read more
