This establishment needs to train their staff better. I had called to make reservations and the person who answered the call told me it would be 30-45 min and I said ok and to put us down for a party of 9. When we got to this restaurant, I checked in and there was a bit of confusion. The gal that spoke to me told the head hostess (?) that she had told us 45-an hour. I told her that's not what I was told. First sign of idiocy on their part. Then my sister-in-law asks if we could sit at two different tables and the hostess says no, you can't do that. We don't do that. Do what?!? She says they don't have the technology to split checks? Huh? What happens if there are two parties. Clearly, she doesn't understand how math and splitting bills works. Someone says "And that's why you work here." The hostess isn't very nice so we leave. The hostess is huffing and puffing at this point; comes out and starts telling us to leave the premise. We are on the sidewalk and after some back and forth about not leaving, she yells "FUCK you" to my sister-in-law, another "FUCK you" to a member in the party and finally to me, a loud angry "FUCK you" with finger gestures and all. All this crass behavior in front of 3 young children. What a shining example of service. I am deeply disappointed that she would behave this way, especially in front of my 9-year-old daughter and my 5-year-olds niece and nephew. So with this behavior, she has demonstrated that her lack of math prowess, coupled with her abusive language (without no regards to children/audience), coupled with her trashy appearance and attire are all reasons why she works at this low paying job. Self-fulfilling prophecy. This is an establishment with no redeeming quality: 2 stars for food and 0 stars for abusive and crude wait staff. Please do not support a restaurant that would yell profanities in front of children. And I have the video to prove all this went down. read more

Food is typically decent, however whenever I go in the mornings the service is absolutely horrendous. The servers are NOT friendly whatsoever and very neglectful. Our waters were empty the whole meal and we didn't even get the chance to ask for a refill because our waitress was too busy sitting up front on her phone. Won't likely be back. read more

My entire family used to go here growing up, but one time they charged my grandfather 25 cents, yes cents, for tortillas that he didn't order, and they wouldn't refund him for it, and he has ever since refused to eat here. We have secretly gone a few times since, but neither the service nor the food is that spectacular, and now I can't really recall the last time I was there. 2004 maybe. So this is probably pretty authentic mexican food. But, it's just not the best. I do like some flavor, and this place just didn't have as much as I was expecting. They have meals for kids, and their overall selection is good, but it reminds me a little bit about the standard oval-plate mexican food you can find in several places in LA. I first visited this restaurant at the beginning of June and have come back three times since. The menu is plentiful, and my food is served hot and heaping (my favorite dish is the chimichanga). They are anything but stingy, and my plate has been absolutely filled to the edge at each visit. I've never left feeling anything but full and satisfied. I have to give a shoutout to their friendly staff as well. Juan in particular is one of the hardest working men I've ever seen. El Tecolote was so bad in 2006 that we waited until 2018 to return. We are glad we did. The "ambiance" doesn't seem to have changed much but the food is much better than we remember it. I had the "Mini Sampler" which isn't so mini. The boss had the "Chicken in Mole" (sauce) which she found to be better than most. The salsa was excellent and plentiful. Wonderful experience with service and the food served. I used to love Lupes Mexican food in Thousand Oaks. Since they closed I've tried every Mexico can food restaurant and this fits the bill. I first went to the men's room of this restaurant to wash my hands before eating. There were no paper towels or toilet paper. I could imagine employees wiping hands on their clothes. That's what I had to do. I told the bartender about the problem and he said he would fix it. About 45 minutes later I needed to use the men's room. Still no toilet paper or hand towels.(UGH!) If I ever return I will first check if the men's room has been serviced. Also, typical of many restaurants I encounter, there was no shelf to place a briefcase and no hook to hang a jacket. I hope that others who encounter faulty restrooms in restaurants will also register their complaints. Perhaps then more restaurants will attend to their restrooms. Hadn't been to this place in over 25 years and came back at it is exactly the same! Food was great! I had the mikes original (I think that is what it was called) it was braised pork on sauce and it was amazing! Wife had the chili rellano and said it was delicious... If you like spicy, Ask for the hot salsa you will not be disappointed! We brought the kids and they have a ton of kids options. Our daughter actually had a hot dog (don't tell anyone) Andy hey we're very accommodating to the family! The bar is pretty cool while you're waiting and the atmosphere is authentic. I highly recommend this restaurant. It gets a little busy but that's ok because there is ample parking the bar is readily available. read more
