This place is so great that I'm writing this review as I finish up my meal! First of all, the backwards nachos were AH-MAZING!! It was so refreshingly different. And they have the perfect amount of chips. My boyfriend and I were surprised at the ratio. It was extremely filling and I'm glad we added carnitas to it. I ordered the molletes with steak and it was so yummy. The bread was nicely and evenly toasted with melted cheese (heaven). I only ate a quarter of it because I was so full from the nachos, but that means leftovers for later tonight!! Along with my meal I ordered the mango lemonade and it was so delicious and sweet. Only thing I have to say is that it took quite some time for our final meal to come out, but that's okay because we were so full from the backwards nacho and sandwich (which I only ate 1/4 of) that we ended up cancelling it! tldr; genderless bathrooms, great lemonade, amazing and cheap food ($10ish and under). Great food & excellent concept... I genuinely enjoy eating in there. But if you work in the area, like I do, calling ahead for your order won't save you any time. I've consistently ordered and showed up 10-15 mins after the time they have told me and still had to wait for an additional 10-15 in person. Today when I went and stated that I was in a rush, the gentleman that was assisting me seemed annoyed that I was in a hurry. But for the record I ordered at 12:30 was told 15 mins and I showed up 25 mins later. And I STILL had to wait ANOTHER 10 mins. Unfortunately, El Taller just went from my favorite lunch spot to the place I go to when I have time to dine in only. read more

Been here a few times, once two years ago or so, and just last week and this place is great. I honestly forgot I been here until is stepped in my second time and had the delicious food. My first time I had a tasty beef dish with potatoes in a perfectly light creamy, spicy sauce. I had it a longgg time ago but remember it tasted so good! Idk if it's still in the menu but i recommend. Most recently I had the steak torta because everyone said it was good on yelp and boy they were right. It was perfectly made and fresh and delicious. The ratio of meat, fresh avocado, bread, lettuce and sauce was just perfect. The meat was tasty and freshly grilled, the avocado was perfect, it was just really good. And the tostones.... omg best I've had. I thought these reviews were a little much, but damn they are the best I've had By farrrr. Perfectly fried, perfectly seasoned. What a great lil book cafe....clean, nicely themed and attentive service. I have been before for.lunch with friends but it keeps getting better. The menu is Mexican fare but not what you find in most other local spots. Here it's coffee or cocktails with great appetizers or full entrees. Salads and sandwiches with different meats or shrimp. Tortas, molletes are all good flavorful choices. They have several vegetarian and vegan options too. Yay The tables are covered in paper and mason jars of pencils so you can be artistic while you wait on your food. The owners own other restaurants in the city and have a good reputation. Had lunch here on a whim while making our way to Portsmouth NH. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. This gem had very tasty Mexican fusion that had me so thankful that my wife stumbled upon it. The gourmand in me was jumping up and down for the homemade chips and salsa as well as the flan! Worst customer service ever !! I came here to eat after work. I asked the guy at the counter if I can order and he told me I can take a seat and someone would be right with me to take my order. The happening place to eat is El Taller - if you like fried plantains, unfinished wood grain, and critical pedagogy, then this is the spot to be...no, but really, this is a phenomenal cafe! Everything about this cafe is spot on, both as a cafe/restaurant, but also in fitting into the fabric of Lawrence in a really cool way. Food: When it comes to price, it can't be beat, and they are serving up incredible food, much of which is Dominican or Dominican-inspired. The chicken torta is incredible (I got it because the women paying in front of me couldn't stop talking about it), but for a little more food, check out the chicken entomada. Presentation isn't anything fancy, but the flavor and tenderness were out of this world. And of course, you MUST get a sit of tostones (crisp fried plantains) to complete the meal. Drink: I don't really drink coffee, but their setup looks pretty en pointe. Ambience: This is maybe my favorite part. The interior is inviting and unpretentious, with smaller and larger tables to fit your needs. The space also doubles as a community performance and meeting space (which is just cool in general), but consequently, the configuration can change as need, whether you are alone doing work or have a big group. Perhaps my FAVORITE part, though, is the giant book case across the wall of the store, with books for purchase or to read in store. The best part? A vast majority of the books are written by authors of color, discuss topics of social justice and critical pedagogies, and are bilingual or spanish langauge, too! There is even a section of kids books! Lawrence doesn't seem like the place where a fancy Brooklyn cafe is needed. Love this place to much. I grew up in Lawrence, and this is how Lawrence should be seen. So much talent and love found in the art & food. It's also a book shop, so be sure to browse. You can get you coffee fix, tortas, tostones, pollo y papa, as well as classics bar foods like nachos, french fries/onion rings, fried mozzarella and chicken wings. They also have veg options like the yoga bowl w veggies, black beans, rice & salsa! They have .35 cent wing deals on Tuesdays nights from 4-10pm, study night on Wednesday w bottomless coffee when you buy a drip coffee from 9-11pm. Open mics all the time too if you keep an eye out! Deep rich flavors and upscale presentation is what I found today eating here. The upside down nachos were superb. It seemed all ingredients were hand made and pieced together perfectly....even the chips are fried fresh for each order and served warm. I would live at El Taller if I could; trust me... I've tried. The only thing I don't like about this place is that they have so much good food that I can't eat it all. Again, trust me... I try every time I go. Every time I go I try a new menu item and find a new favorite. Before you know it, a few hours have gone by and now I don't fit in my car anymore. I recommend the chilaquiles, especially if the have chorizo to sub. I am also in love with the bee sting. Oh and the affagato is amazing. Also try the mozz sticks. I had really high hopes for this place, both the food and beverage menus looked awesome. I originally had wanted to get a smoothie but was told they were without a blender at the moment, fine I ordered an Italian soda instead which was ok and the reason for the one star. Decided to order the quesadilla de papas while sitting at the counter top. I saw there were a few orders in front of mine which was no big deal so I sat there working for a while. About 25 minutes later I was told my food was coming right up. I waited for another 10 minutes or so before I inquired about my order only to find they had just started making it because somebody had marked my order as made already. I was the only person sitting at the counter and the kitchen wasn't even busy they were too busy chatting with each other and I somehow slipped between the cracks being the only person at the counter and one of less than 10 people in the restaurant, most of whom were already eating. How does that even happen? I sat there for almost 45 minutes waiting. I had enough waiting asked for a refund on the food, which I got and packed it up and left hungry. This was an awesome spot to grab a cheap dinner with a delicious and unique taste to the menu. The pulled pork burger was one of the messiest items I have ever eaten, but the bun integrity stood at the head of the pack. Absolutely no disintegration of the bun under heavy sauce loading. First time at El Taller (pronounced EL-Thai-airrrr ) and I cannot YELP! enough about how good this place is. I had been wanting to go and I am staying 1 block away but I finally made it today. I spent hours there studying and the music playing was not an issue and neither were the other customers. After about 4 hours studying I ordered the steak and potatoes. OH MY GOD! It was awesome! In fact do not go by the pictures on Yelp!. They will help but the food is so much better than the pictures. All day I watched as others ordered other dishes and ll I could do was ask them what they ordered because it ALL looked amazingly good. Come to find out the young owner is the son of the people that own Cafe Azteca. The apple did not fall from the tree there and he is doing great work pushing out great recipes and TASTY food in an environment that is conducive to studying or just meeting with friends. I am hooked and my servers were awesome and attentive; especially Nuilece. I probably butchered the spelling but she was incredibly nice and they're lucky to have her working there. Husband took me here for an early Mother's Day lunch and I give him an A++ and El Taller 5 stars. The restaurant is really clean (including the bathrooms). I love the industrial chic decor and I think it's cute that it's part bookstore part restaurant. You order the food at the register and they bring the food out to you. Their steak and potatoes dish is amazing. We also loved their loaded fries and nachos. It's definitely our go-to spot when we are in the Andover/Lawrence area. First time here and there was a terrific selection on the menu. I wanted to try everything. The waiter recommended the chicken dish which was really delicious. It came with two large pieces of chicken which I couldn't finish so I brought one home along with some leftover sides and it was just as delicious the next day. The waitstaff were chill and didn't mind that we took forever to make a decision. We were there at 4:00 on Saturday so it wasn't crowded. There were several empty tables at that time of day. The only thing that I don't like about El Taller is the food is so good, that when I visit, I can't help but repeat my favorites. The staff is usually great at accommodating changes so be creative (within reason). For example, I was in a few weeks ago and wanted some chilaquiles, they asked if I wanted steak, chicken... I asked about Chorizo and they said no problem. It was DELICIOUS. Most importantly, it has been amazing to see this place become a pillar of the community. They stand up for worker rights, LQBQT, issues, and other causes near and dear to me. I cant get enough and usually try to eat in and get an order to go. read more
