Al pastor was a little dry but decent. Overall I think if you come here don't come with super high expectations, any time I've come here the price changes and im not sure why. Always searching exploring new places to eat while my clients are at dinner or wine tasting, tonight they are at Single Tread In Healdsburg, 4 hours of foraging around. This place was in an older shopping center in downtown Healdsburg (hole in the wall' only a little English spoken here, I liked the booths and older Mexican decor and artwork, plus the Mexican music, feeling like I'm in Mexico except the fish tacos were talipia or maybe catfish' they just had that fresh water pond flavor. I am spoiled I visit Mexico each year (Baja sir) fresh fresh seafood tocos there! But the shrimp toco was great lots of shrimp! The service was very friendly and I love the real Mexican atmosphere. Taco Grande is a Door Dash restaurant. As the weather is SO hot, we decided to order some nice taco salads for supper. I ordered 2 al pastor salads at 6:20. Salads are $13 each and I tipped the DD driver $6, more than 20%. At around 6:40, the driver dropped off "our order" of 2 tacos... no salads. Oops! We called. Oh! Mistake in the kitchen... we are very busy... I'm recovering from surgery, my caregiver is reticent about leaving me alone, and she shouldn't be out in the heat. Finally, she has gone to the restaurant to inquire about the food. By this time, no one else is even open. When I last ate here, one of my lunch partners found a cucaracha in her food. On our way to an anniversary weekend up in Mendocino, Jamie W. and I stopped in the charming hamlet of Healdsburg to get a bite since the drive has a relatively barren stretch of dining options until you get to the coast. Instead of waiting in line at one of the popular places on the plaza, we found ourselves strolling over to that same strip mall where Flakey Cream Do-nuts is, but we ended up here for a budget-priced Mexican breakfast. We were hoping to find a nugget here, but it wasn't really all that special despite the reasonable prices. Jamie ordered the $8.99 Vegetarian Plate, which probably represented the best value on the menu. Came here on a recommendation of a coworker. One of my favorite dishes is chicken mole. I ordered chicken mole and let's just say I was not disappointed. It was the best chicken mole I've had! Lots of flavor and you could taste the different chiles in it. I will be back for it soon. My husband ordered the chili verde and it also was very flavorful and prepared well. El Taco Grande is one of Healdsburg's older Mexican restaurants that is situated in that crowded little shopping center next to the theater. I saw it yesterday while about my downtown promenade with Sofie. Today I had lunch there. The theater is where you go see pretend movies. El Taco Grande is a stage of reality. This was my first visit to "The Big Taco". I had a chili relleno, beef enchilada, rice and beans. On a whim, I asked for a horchata, though I did not see it on the menu. "Of course Señor!" I like it when someone shows me respect. The ambiance of this busy establishment is "Mom and Pop" - two very large flat screens at each end of the dining area showing the World Cup. Today it was England vs Tunisia. Score: 1-1. This is the place a working stiff would be. Jeans, dusty boots and a ball cap would be right at home. Bottled beer in the cooler and sit anywhere you want. Stretch out your legs, cross your feet and rest your tired dogs. The horchata was sweet and cinnamony. This was the good Mexican cinnamon that you aren't going to buy at Safeway. I was glad I asked for the horchata. Poured over ice, it was refreshing. It took some time for the food to arrive. The chili relleno was remarkably large! I do not know if I've ever seen one so large! That wasn't a problem though because it was heavenly! The chili, the subtle soft flavor of the melted cheese and the tasty sauce they prepared for both enchilada and chili relleno were quite good. I wasn't impressed with the enchilada because the meat inside was nothing special. The sauce was good though - as well as the beans. This was a work'n man's lunch. You don't worry about the spiced meat when you are a work'n man. You just wolf it down and run back to your truck so you can get back to work'n. I wasn't working though. Haven't worked in years. It's okay. Sometimes it's fun to drive down to "The Big Taco", have lunch and pretend like you're a work'n man. As if a beautifully staged drama, England scored the winning goal in the last 4 minutes of the game with a corner kick and a clever head butt of the ball into the goal netting. The English team dog piled the guy who scored the goal. "That would probably break some ribs and I'd be hobbling around for a month if they did that to me.", I thought. I had finished my meal. It was good. The man at the register was happy. "Which team do you like?" I don't watch sports. I smiled, looked at the celebration on the big screen and said, "England!" He laughed and rang me up. I could see he is a huge soccer fan. He told me Mexico is still in it. Beat Germany 1-0. I was happy for him. Who wants the Germans to win? Not me. El Taco Grande will serve you a work'n man's lunch. This place was absolutely amazing. My visit started with prompt service. The second I walked in the door they said to sit wherever I like. I was brought water immediately. They took my order within a couple minutes. I ordered soft tacos with shredded chicken and a side of guacamole. At $2.99 each soft taco, it was a great deal. The presentation of the tacos was very pleasing. They added vibrant radishes, an orange slice all spread out pretty and a sprinkle of cilantro. The tortillas were homemade, so soft and flavorful, the best I've ever had. The shredded chicken had a ton of flavor and the salsa on the tacos as well. I enjoyed the fact that the salsa wasn't overwhelmingly spicy. The guacamole was definitely fresh with chunks of tomato, onion and cilantro in it. That too was super tasty. So... I've been avoiding the T.G. for quite some time... i mean with El Som's right down the street... why bother. But, i had to hit it up, i had to give it a shot. In the name of Mexican variety, i had to try El Taco Grande. I wish i hadn't The two stars i give to T.G. are purely for food quantity. I ordered the "Burrito Loco" because i was feeling pretty Loco at the time, and good lord! that's a lot of grub. Although the burrito totally suuuuuucked, I feel like i got my 8 bucks worth of rice, beans, tortilla, meat and sauce. Damn, I could have cut the thing in 1/4s and sold it for a profit. But... quantity does me no good when quality is poor. Basically the burrito lacked in flavor. overall very boring to eat. chips sucked too, and the salsa had no overwhelmingly redeeming qualities. So, to wrap this up. the only reason to go to El Taco Grande is if you are planning a cross-continental hiking trip and want to pack one item of food that will last you the entire trip... or... if you want to single-handedly feed all of Africa, plus half of Asia- with one burrito. There is good and bad info. So I went here and I gotta say that their shrimp cocktail was the biggest I've seen and had in a very long time, there were at least 50 shrimp in there. Their service was very nice and atmosphere was helpful and clean. The bad was that within the shrimp cocktail, all the shrimp were rubbery and overlooked. Plus they did not devein their shrimp, it was absolutely disgusting. I had to devein them and clean some myself which I gave up after a while. I don't know about you but I for one do not like eating the the intestinal poop track of a shrimp :( Please don't over cook your shrimp cocktail and please devein your shrimp, I guarantee I will order it again if you do so :) read more
