Not a typical Mexican restaurant so if you normally get something standard from other places they probably don't make it here. The menu seems to be very different but that's not a bad thing. The waitress was nice and gave good recommendations. Only downfall was that they brought us 1 small basket of chips and we had to keep asking for more instead of being asked if we wanted more. So that was a bit annoying. Our food was good, a bit on the spicy side for sure. Definitely not a lack of flavor. Good deals on kids meals. read more

I had a friend tell me this was great and that she liked taking her mom here. So, naturally, after being a 20 year La Fiesta purist, I thought I would try it. Upon walking in, it was dead on a Friday at lunch. The staff consisted of 2 ladies, one who was on her phone and rolling silverware and the other who helped me. Both were very nice, but this place has zero energy the way La Fiesta does. You can go to the latter on a Friday lunch and it's full, people at the bar, friendly staff talking to you. This place was like a nursing home cafeteria. Then it dawned on me, my friend hates spicy food and her mom is 80. When I looked around the restaurant at the 3-4 tables of people, everyone was over 65+. The table next to me announced a birthday of 75, and she arrived in a walker. Chipotle Chicken was dry, shells were cold, and the beans were pasty and sticky, not fresh. Everything tasted "old" - like dirty kitchen, old stale smokey pans, etc. It would be very difficult for me to even want to try it again. And I give most anything a second chance. read more

We love this place! The food just keeps getting better, and Carmen is a great server. I got the chicken fajita quesadilla. The chicken was fabulous! It was moist, not overcooked like I've had at other restaurants. It had a rub or marinade that had a hint of sweetness to it that elevated the meal. I also love that I can get extra beans instead of rice, and that they have black beans (yummier and healthier than the regular refried beans). My family is split about whether the refried black beans or the whole black beans are better - I vote for the whole ones. If you're a traditionalist, you can get regular refried beans. I tasted my husband's seafood chimichanga, and the sauce was delicious. My dad's arroz con pollo had a very generous serving of chicken on it. And the tilapia is another favorite - the mango salsa is so tasty I forget it's good for me, too. It's always nice to see the owner, Luis, when he isn't in the kitchen making things taste great. We have been visiting ElSombrero for over 20 years. Its has been a "GOTO" for my family and always a special place. They have the ability to accommodate large parties for get togethers, or intimate "Date Night" with small table or the round cubby built in booth with privacy. The Salsa is amazing and always prepared fresh. This is the best hand made salsa of any restaurant I have ever had, HANDS DOWN! I have never had a meal here I did not like I've had everything on the menu at least twice. My favorite is off the menu, grilled chicken nachos, with black refried beans. The chicken Taquitos are great, and one of my new favorites is the Chipotle Chicken, extra spicy with tortillas. The house made Sangrias and margaritas are always on point! The service here is like family. Everyone is so nice! Easily the best Authentic Mexican Restaurant in Miami county and I'd go as far as saying the state of Ohio. It is that good! read more

The mariachi music was a little annoying but it's a Mexican restaurant so I guess that's part of it. 22 of us met to celebrate a friends birthday. Even though that was a big group, the restaurant took very good care of us. They can handle large groups! Chips & salsa were out first. Crisp chips and a very nice house made salsa. I had a two burritos, a spinach and mushroom and a chicken burrito. They came covered with a nice sauce and cheese. Black beans were my side. It was all too salty but tasted good. All the others had a variety of things and everyone seemed pleased. Portion size on most if not all was large. Beer selection is not great but they did have Negro Mondelo beer which I enjoy. read more

I'll start this review by saying, I live in Houston Texas, so I have very high standards for Mexican restaurants. That being said, El Sombrero is solid, especially considering that it's in a small town in the Midwest. I have been to El Sombrero countless times and every time is a great experience. Service is fast and friendly (so there is rarely a wait unless you are peak dinner time on a weekend), prices are very affordable and food is good quality. There are a good mix of more Americanized dishes as well as traditional Mexican dishes, so there is something for everyone. The margaritas are great as well. Probably the best part of this restaurant is the owner Reuben. He is so friendly and truly a great human. Not only does he treat his customers right but he does a ton of outreach and charity for his community, all while maintaining excellent quality at his restaurant. The only reason I don't give 5 stars is because my standards for Mexican food are so high and I'm used to much more authentic / traditional food here in my hometown. But compared to other restaurants in Ohio, it's 5 stars for sure. read more

As a real Mexican this place is at best mid. The beans and rice are bland. The tacos are just an Americanized version (like Taco bell). The beef tamale was somewhat good but real tamales don't have cheese on top??? The only thing I liked was their salsa and chips. The staff was at least very friendly and the ambience is nice. But they need to stop holding back on seasonings and make the food taste better for it to be really authentic. read more

They've kept it true to Ruben's vision and we know he's smiling down on them!BUT, Luis has a few ideas of his own, and if you missed his Valentines' special of grilled tilapia with mango sauce, you missed something epic. Even my husband ( who is NOT a fish-lover ) said he would order it! The tilapia portion was generous. The mango sauce had the perfect balance of sweet, tart, and mild heat. They always use the best ingredients to make sure you get great value and have a wonderful dining experience. This restaurant has been a staple in Miami County for over 20 years. It's my favorite place to chow down on some chips and epic salsa. Pro tip ask for the hot salsa and mix it with the mild. Some of my favorite dishes are: Pollo ala crema, flautas, burrito el grande (try with picadillo and whole beans), and the enchiladas. (cheese and onion oh my). I believe this is the original Mexican restaurant in the Troy area. We went here for years because it was consistently good & the owners are so very nice. Then the glitter of something new, along with the longer distance to this place & the crowdedness during peak hours, drew us away for some time. We returned a few weeks ago after driving by & seeing open spaces in the lot, catching them during a rare lull in business. The service was extremely friendly and helpful; they treated us like family. And the food was better than I even remembered. I got the Mexican Flag Enchiladas and they were fantastic! The beans & rice were really great too. My husband very much enjoyed his fajitas, and the teens ate most of their food, so they liked it too. The free sopapillas at the end of the meal really made their day! They do put a ton of cheese on everything, so if you don't want all the cheese be sure to ask for none or perhaps for light cheese. They will accommodate that request. One of the reasons I love supporting this business is that the owners of this place provide a community dinner every Thanksgiving free of charge. El sombrero is basic Mexican restaurant. Not to much to get excited about. Service is good. Food is average. THE GOOD The salsa that you dunk your chips into is the best I've ever had. Chunky, thick, and boasting with flavor. Onions and tomatoes explode in your mouth with every bite. I was really impressed with it. THE OKAY... All the meals we tried were just ok. Nothing really to get excited about. The margaritas were served in boring glasses, the chips were plain and not interesting by any means. The cheese dip lacked flavor and was very runny. Just nothing great, nothing terrible. THE BAD Kids menu had jello. My daughter was thrilled till it came out in a hospital looking container. Same thing with my sons pudding. Overall Presentation was pretty bad. Everything looked thrown together. The restaurant plays 90's music (which I love) but I feel it should be Mexican music. There are other Mexican restaurants in the area that are far superior on every level. If I could give half stars it would be a 2.5. read more

It normally takes a while for our food but it was extremely long wait and out waitress seemed preoccupied. We watched as other tables were sat and orders taken and drinks served while we continued to wait for acknowledgement, then we still did not have our drinks after they had already served our appetizer. My order was wrong, so I had to wait again. The final straw was when we went to check out, they host ran our card and said she could not tell if it went thru and wanted to run it again, we asked for her name if we had any issues with it charging twice and she was extremely rude, rolled her eyes and lip at us. Went here the other night with a party of 30+ people for a rehearsal dinner before my friend's wedding. Despite having made the reservation weeks in advance, they seemed ill-prepared for our group. Our ONE server was entirely overwhelmed, which is understandable with that many people. Being short staffed was not her fault, but she oddly rushed us out of there, which was uncomfortable. What really agitated us was her bringing the check while we were still eating! She had not taken our plates, offered boxes, dessert, or coffee.... she brought the check during through the meal. It was SO bizarre. The drinks were poor, especially for margaritas at a Mexican restaurant. Tasted like sour mix with tequila and maybe lime juice from concentrate. Very weak, too (I had four margaritas and no buzz... just felt sick later from all the sugar). A friend ordered vodka tonic, and the server brought the drink saying "We didn't have tonic, but we used something else." No idea what the substitute for tonic water is, but it was FUNKY. It was sent back. The atmosphere here is typical suburban Mexican restaurant. Our orders did come out correctly and arrived close to each other. Portions were generous. Food was generic. Lots of ground beef, microwaved rice, and queso. 2 stars for the poor quality of drinks and service. read more

CHEAP GREASY GROUND BEEF We've given this business high marks in the past but the last couple of times we've eaten there it SUCKED. All due to cheap fatty ground beef. Must use a 60/40 or 70/30 ratio. Wife and I both ordered Taco Salads with GB this last time and found the bottom of the shell's a greasy soggy mess. The GB at the bottom was laying in a pool of fatty oil and grease. The time before that the wife ordered a taco plate and me a combo meal. My plate with chicken and pork items was great. But the wife's taco's were soaked through on the bottoms of the shells with grease and falling apart. Stick to the non GB items if you eat here. read more

Margaritas are amazing, especially the pineapple. The Sopa de tortilla was great, the guac is perfect and garlicky, and my son gobbled up his fajitas.
