found a hair in my food. tried to pay my bill for 45 mins. sitting at the bar, 3 obnoxious idiots loud but they were served 3x in 45 mins and I was ignored. held my card in my hand, waving the bartender/server down several times. there was literally 8 people in the entire place so they weren't busy. never going back and wouldn't suggest anyone going there unless you like hair in your food and watching loud ob drunks and wait for a bill for 45 mins is what you want. Finally went and found someone to get the bill. Brought it to me and stood over my shoulder until i signed it. read more

7 of us stopped for lunch - each had a different choice from the menu. I had a chimichanga - bland. The decried beans that came with it were also bland. The salsa was also not the best. I asked if they had something with a bit more spice to it and server didn't seem to understand what I was asking for - brought us more of the same. Food did come out quickly although we had to go looking for him to get drink refills. I'd pick a different place if you have the opportunity. read more

The decor is good and appealing, especially considering the fact that this restaurant is in the middle of a highway with nothing else like it for miles. The restaurant is owned and operated by people from Mexico which gave me another reason to give this restaurant a try. The food though leaves a lot to be desired as it just is bland and devoid of any taste. The refried beans had no taste and the tortilla were like paper. The fajita veggies were too oily and the chicken fajitas had too many big chunks of tomatoes. I have tasted food at chain Mexican food restaurants and well known sit down restaurants in DC and nothing tastes like this. It may be good for the people in the vicinity of the restaurant but for the "city folks" like me and my wife the food was just a bad experience. read more

I'll go ahead and give El Sombrero (or "El Sombs," colloquially ) a good review. Bar what some patrons have commented, the restaurant does have its merits. Yes, the food is flavorful, and that's not because I haven't had "better" from the "big city." I have developed a sort-of litmus test for restaurants based on the sweet tea served, and their tea is good (literally and figuratively). Usually, the wait staff (unless overwhelmed by the swarms of hungry patrons at dinner hour) is fairly quick about getting around to letting you order. The menu is pretty diverse and well-described enough for one to know what's coming out of the kitchen. The food is usually out in ten to fifteen minutes, so unless you're hitting the bar or wasting time with friends, don't expect to be made to be there too long. I don't have one certain "usual" (besides the sweet tea), but of the items I order, I'm usually satisfied with what I get. One of my favorites is the Pollo Fundido, though friends of mine tend to go with the Big Burrito or the Chicken la Loma, usually a chile relleno on the side. (Don't be afraid to try other things, though. A lot of the menu items are similar to one another ingredient-wise.) As for the lack of the fifth star, the wait staff can be a little inconsistent in quality on occasion. It's nothing experience-breaking, though. After all, I keep going back. In the end, the sweet tea is still good. read more

This is one of the best Mexican restaurants I've had the pleasure of dining at. No matter the time of day, my family and I have always been seated promptly. The service is GREAT! The food is AWESOME! I don't drink but they do have a full bar. My only complaint would be that the atmosphere changes on weekend evenings when the local Law School students come in. Alcohol sometimes makes people get a little loud. All in all though this place is EXCELLENT... Fajita chimichangas are mouthwatering. Sweet tea is exceptional! read more

Maybe my standard of good Mexican is too high. Recently moved here and this was not anything close to authentic. The chips tasted of old fry grease and the salsa was terrible. I got Chile Colorado. The restaurant has authentic Mexican fare and is always busy it seams. A full bar with happy hour beer prices. The classic margarita (on the rocks with salted rim) was above average. The staff is very attentive. The complementary chips and salsa are fresh and tasty. The menu is extensive and reasonable priced for the quality and quantity. Recommend the fajitas as it comes on an iron pan steaming hot with plenty of sides. read more

Place is a disrespectful representation of Mexican food. If I had the option to give it no stars then I would have. Place is themed nicely but the food and service are terrible. So many options on the menu but the food all tastes and looks the same. Usually slow so the workers really find no incentive to work when people do show up. This is our favorite Mexican restaurant!!! We actually drive over 30 minutes just to eat at this Mexican restaurant because it is excellent!!! We drive past others to get to this one!!! Out of every one my husband and I have been to, El Sombrero is the only one that has consistently fresh chips and has the absolute BEST salsa around!!! My husband loves his food spicy, and this place has never disappointed him!!! He always orders the Chili Colorado and he loves it!! I always get the Chicken Burritos and they are delicious. The waiters are attentive, courteous and never leave your drinks empty. Do yourself a favor a give El Sombrero a chance, you won't be disappointed!!! You'll even start driving out of your way to go get some awesome food, too!! read more
