We came in last night due to everything else being closed because of the snow. A doctor we work with paid for the entire bill in cash before leaving. The server later claimed the cash was only a tip and then charged the rest of us for the meal again, resulting in us being charged double. The server ended up receiving over a $100 tip. This was extremely unprofessional and left us feeling taken advantage of. Unfortunately, this experience showed a lack of honesty and trustworthiness from the staff. read more

The price was good, and my chicken enchilada was flavorful. Rice and beans in the combo were alright, though nothing special. But the "crisp" taco was a major disappointment - barely Taco Bell level, with a shell like a packaged one I might buy in the grocery store and mushy, nondescript ground beef. I don't live in the area but wouldn't choose to go back to this restaurant. And if I did, I'd definitely avoid the taco. read more

The food is okay, but anything you get tastes the same. The food, I suspect for the most part is pre made and just reheated and served. This can be noticed in things like shredded chicken, beef and rice. Sometimes it's very tough and under seasoned. The building is in decent shape and seems clean. The servers are nice for the most part. Over all, I would say if you want mediocre Mexican food for a decent price, this is your place. read more

*Disclaimer: As a Texan, I'm biased and have eaten actual authentic Mexican food. I came here with a party of about 10 for a birthday dinner with my classmates. The service was very, very fast and friendly which is really the only reason they got the third star. They were nice enough to keep the birthday cake in the fridge for us and bring it out when we were ready. Our waiter, Adrian, was so patient with us and really made the experience better than it should've been. The food was below average. The salsa had no taste whatsoever. It was like they got a can of diced tomatoes and blended them and put them in a bottle. We had to add some of the habanero hot sauce on the table to make it better. I will say, the portions were large for the price. Pretty much everyone had leftovers. I got pork chops which came with a salad (no choice of dressing, just ranch), tortillas, and rice and beans. The salad was interesting. Basically the shredded lettuce they use for everything else and some chopped onions thrown on top. I could've done without. The rice and beans were pretty good, but the pork chop was just eh. The description said "Mexican seasoned" but I'm still looking for this seasoning they spoke of. I was a little disappointed they didn't have flautas on the menu which is kind of a basic item that all authentic Mexican restaurants have. Had a great lunch at this nice enjoyable restaurant. Did not have cocktails and I don't even know if they have liquor. Service was quick, friendly and efficient. Waited on right away. Food came quickly. I had a Grilled Chicken fajita taco salad. Chicken seemed fresh and a had a great flavor. They gave nice warm chips and individual cups of salsa while you wait for your food. Really good, fresh, warm chips. Definitely would go back!!! read more

El Azul Grande is a great place to eat in the area. I have more experience with the Prestonsburg location, but I have also been to this location numerous times. The service is always really quick and friendly. We've always been seated promptly, orders taken almost immediately, and the food always comes out fast, hot, and freshly prepared. Everything I've tried from their menu has been good, though I typically always ordered the same thing - the Pollo Bandido. Loved, loved, loved this place. My gentleman friend and I were staying at the Landmark Hotel... which is a whole other review. We were traveling to Butcher Holler to see Loretta Lynn's homestead, if you must know. Anyway, El Azul Grande, such a delight. It's hidden on the fourth floor of the Landmark Hotel. Judging from the business many people in the area know about it. Very accommodating with my vegan substitutions. They made me the most wonderful Veggie Burrito in Salsa Mole. The woman at the counter taking care of us was a complete doll. Woudl travel back to Pikeville just to eat here. read more

The only things authentic about this place are the employees and the decor. The food was not good. Everything from the bland tomato purée they call salsa to the cheap meat and flavorless rice was a disappointment. Even the ice water was horrible - I ended up having to get soda in a bottle. The only reason I gave it 2 stars was for the service. We arrived shortly before they closed and the staff didn't give me that "rushed" feeling. We were so excited to have el azul in the plaza close to home. I've never had bad service from any other el azul location, but this location next to food city in pikeville is horrible. They bring your food fast enough but that's it. No drink refills. No asking if you want dessert. Bad service a few different times. Best restaurant in Pikeville, hands down. We stayed at the Landmark Hotel and were so happy to see that there was a restaurant in the hotel. We brought our four small children and ordered cheese dip, kids mac & cheese, a cheese quesadilla, and the molcajete. Our children devoured the cheese dip, quesadilla, and Kraft mac & cheese. The molcajete was fabulous. My only complaint would be that it only came with two four tortillas but there was enough fixings for at least six more tortillas, which we ended up ordering separately. Every single thing here was delicious, from the chips and salsa all the way to the complimentary birthday fried ice cream. We will definitely be eating here every time we are in the area. We decided to dine here due to the rating here on Yelp, but I was left a little disappointed. The pros: Our waiter was great, our portion sizes were huge, and the food was prompt. The Cons: The salsa provided with the chips tasted and looked like puréed tomatoes, the guacamole didn't taste fresh and had too much of a tomato taste (which was weird because it didn't seem to have any in it), and the flavor of the meals didn't have the authentic Mexican flavor I'm used to. read more

Most awful restaurant in pikeville!! I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Employees were so rude and barely got any service. Found a hair in my food and server denied it told me "there are no employees with long brown hair in the back" when I have blonde hair so could not of been mine. After the incident I asked to talk to the manager but yet no manager showed. Finally after the server left to talk to another employee not even two tables away and told him that I was lying about the incident and said some things I will not repeat. Overall worst experience at a Mexican restaurant I have had . Not to mention I downloaded yelp to warm everyone So again I will repeat do not waist your time nor money!!! read more

My family found themselves in Pikeville for an evening, so we decided to eat Mexican food. We had eaten here in the past, so this was the choice. We were promptly seated and drink orders were taken and delivered along with chips and salsa. The chips were nice and hot. I wasn't a fan of the salsa, but most salsa isn't as good as I make at home. It was pureed with no chunks of tomato or onion, which tasted fine. I ordered two cheese enchiladas with rice and beans. I was given the option of cheese sauce or red sauce. I chose the red sauce. Everything tasted good. The cheese in the enchiladas could have been melted a little better, though. The other entrees ordered were chicken fried chimichangas. Other options were steak and not fried. It looked great and was told they were good. Another entree was the Fajita chicken with cheese sauce, rice and beans. It was good. Other reviews stated that it was a typical small town Mexican restaurant, and I agree. They are very friendly and your order is delivered faster than any other restaurant around. Not comparing this restaurant with original Tex Mex places in San Antonio, this one is as good as any I have visited in Kentucky. If you are craving Mexican food in Pikeville, this place should not disappoint you. read more

I'm a native of Pikeville and although I no longer live there, I visit relatively often to see family & help out at the Big Sandy Heritage Center. I've been eating at El Azul Grande since I was a kid (when it was in a totally different building). It's my go-to restaurant when visiting town, and one of few Mexican restaurants I consider comparable to the taste of my favorite Mexican place where I currently live. The atmosphere at El Azul is as you'd expect at other small Mexican restaurants -- average noise level, music, cultural decorations, etc. You will typically be seated quickly, and everything you order will arrive at a reasonable pace. Personally, I always order the queso dip (supplemented by free, bottomless tortilla chips as expected), which is, almost without exception, warm & delicious with just the right consistency/thickness. It is likely the third best queso dip I've ever had (which is saying something). The entree (for me, usually enchiladas with rice & beans) is always warm to hot, fresh, and tasty. Wait staff are kind, friendly, and attentive to refills & the like. All of this is offered at a fairly reasonable price. All in all, El Azul Grande is a family favorite, offering some of the best Mexican food in Eastern Kentucky. I highly recommend it. read more

I chose this restaurant because it had the best reviews. I was disappointed with the pitcher of Margaritas I ordered. There was almost no tequila in it. After half the pitcher, there was no "buzz" at all. The sauce was only tomato sauce and little spices and the quacamole was old. The waiter was very nice. The price is what I expected. read more
