This place it's three stars simply because of the best queso, and they did have great customer service. It took us quite a while to get drinks and chips and salsa though. However, the case it was fantastic. The taco salad was boring. Just was not impressed. read more

Sometimes you go to chain restaurants and there is an inconsistency in the quality and taste of the food. This is not so with El Sombrero. I have found that the taste that I like about my hometown restaurant is the same for the others I have visited. I have eaten several items off the menu, but my all time favorite would be the white queso. Hands down the best I've had and even tried on my own to make. Shhhh! Right after the queso is the Texas Nachos, ok it's a mound of tortilla chips with steak, chicken and shrimp, topped with the white queso. Can you say yes please! It's even enough to share, so bring a buddy! But today I ordered the stuffed avocado, which has shredded chicken on the inside, but because I was in my "meatless season" the owner had the cooks to make mine with mushrooms and onions. Oh my goodness it was delicious, I can only imagine what the original must taste like. Definitely will go back for it! I must add the owner and his serve team were all awesome and very inviting. They made you feel like it was their pleasure to serve me and I was family, although it was my first time in this particular establishment. I was looking for a family owned Mexican resturant since I am new to the area and have experienced really good & reasonable ones in the Denton County area where I moved from. Looked up some in Canton and El Sombrero had a rating of $ - showing it was very reasonable. I ordered the enchilada dinner at lunch time on a Friday, and noticed they didn't have a lunch menu with cheaper prices like in most restaurants, all prices were not at one $ but at the $$$ symbol price wise. The chips & salsa was bland which should have given me a clue for the rest of the food to come. The enchiladas tasted medicinal and also like dog food at the same tine - at the very first bite and were oozing grease also. The refried beans & rice were bland but put that and salsa over the enchiladas but all was still very gross. The waitresses were hard working and gave great customer service at least but also seemed to be annoyed by the rude manager or owner, so because of that the atmosphere and experience other than bad food could have been a little better. Bottom line do not go here.! Cannot recommend ! read more

I have bought 4 breakfast burritos here. they are excellent burritos BUT I won't ever come back. everytime I go the price is different because the front desk is confused. if I order the whole breakfast burrito it's 9 something. that's not my order. I take out like 3 things and just add onions. some of the girls up front don't charge me for the onions because I take out some meat and cheese and other stuff and then some do. how does it make sense for me to take out 3 things out of the burrito but be charged 50 cents for onions and it cost more for the burrito with less things? thats the trashiest thing I've ever seen a business do. read more

Salsa is a must. No matter how good the food is, if the salsa is not good, I'm not coming back. That being said, the salsa was great! Fresh taste. We have had a number of dishes. I think we have been three times. Everything has been good. Some things are great. Some are good. The wife loves the chicken quesadillas. She is hooked. This is a large quesadilla! Plan on taking some home. My only complaint is there just aren't many combination dinners on the menu. Offer some plates with a taco and some enchiladas or a quesadilla and a tamale and a taco. I want several tastes and textures in one meal. This would make my day! This is our new go-to Mexican restaurant in Canton/Tyler area. read more

Must have been an off day. We went around 7 pm. The staff was cordial but not exceptional My husbands menu was so dirty it stank. When he went to the bathroom to wash his hands he said it was a mess too. I ordered taco soup and husband ordered tacos. Seasoning was mediocre. We ate there on May 4th, 2019. It was very different from what we are used too. I did have the deep fried Avocado. It was good but not a lot of flavor to me. I asked for it to be stuffed with steak and I got some kind of chopped up meat. They staff was very, very friendly. Their best item I think is their salsa. Very good. My wife asked for their tamales but she wanted it the sauce on the side. They smothered it anyway. My daughters friend asked for his enchiladas to be smothered with queso. That didn't happen either but the server was on top of it and immediately took it back and they fixed it. My daughter had a fried pork chop. It was over cooked and tough. It was also very thinly sliced. Overall it was just ok. Probably won't be back. But you will never find better servers. They were great. read more

Raymond offers a great Mexican plate at a reasonable price. I am a lap band patient and they are glad to fix a smaller plate for me. Horrible! The waitress put in the wrong order and then became defensive when I told her that she had asked if I wanted rice and beans. I told her yes I wanted them she argued no I asked if you wanted a la cart. She brought me a whole meal that I didn't order and then said she could bring beans if I wanted them I said yes please do that but no cheese on them and she brought them right out with cheese. I told her I don't eat cheese or beef so the taco and the beans with cheese would not be touched because I didn't order them. She said ok and then when I got up to leave she still charged me for the wrong meal. How can a person eating alone, ordering 1 meal and 1 tea end up at a $20 total? The waitress was very nice and helpful, but the food quality did not meet up to the ratings we looked at before making the decision to try it. The hot sauce was really good, but that's where the good news stopped. The chicken flautas were bland, the sauce on the enchiladas was a mystery. It was like a gravy, with a little chili powder mixed in. The cheese inside the cheese enchiladas was a runny cheese, not real cheddar, so we had to send that back. The beef fajitas were average. Oh, hurray! Great TexMex in Canton! The chips and salsa are so fresh and crisp, and the queso? YES! Get the bowl for less than a dollar more. The staff is attentive and courteous, always anticipating our needs. I got the fajita nachos, which were laden with cheese, savory refried beans, chopped tomato, fresh guacamole, sour cream and perfectly seasoned grilled chicken. My husband ordered the lunch portion of the steak fajitas, and was very pleased. He said the skirt steak was flavorful and the perfect accompaniment to obviously house-made flour tortillas. The House special is a stuffed avocado, deep fried, served with several other yummy things--that will be my next order! We were too full for the Fried Ice Cream dessert, but we will be back. read more

Our first time here. I had Ray's Special which consisted of toasted biscuits with gravy topped with two fried eggs. I also added 2 fried jalapeños. My guest had two scrambled eggs, extra crispy bacon and toast. Friendly staff, clean, not crowded. The food was good. We went here because the Down Home Cafe was packed. My bill was $12. The food is great, however the customer service at this location is definitely below industry standard. The Texas Style fajitas and a bowl of white queso are all my girlfriend and I can finish. I have been here numerous times now and each time the waiter/waitress did not seem too friendly. When we left today the three hosts/hostesses seemed engrossed in an iPhone game rather than providing good customer service.
