Food: 5/5 - from the Happy Hour menu, we share the house made tortilla chips with gauc and we both ordered the trio taco of any 3 tacos so we had one of each - chicken, pork, and Ling cod. My favourite was the Ling cod. All the meats were soft and tasty but not overcooked. If you're wanting traditional Mexican food, you won't find it here. Lots of different food choices. Heard amazing things about this restaurant so decided to pop by when we were in the area. Service was prompt and not too loud inside. Just a couple of groups as well. We ended up getting 2 sets of tacos and guac to share. We ordered the al pastor taco ($16) and the pescado taco ($16). My favourite out of the 2 is the Pescado - cod was fluffy and was perfectly deep fried, and the other toppings gave it a nice refreshing taste. The Al Pastor had more of a deep charcoal taste, but paired nicely with the refreshing pineapple. They say it comes with 2 tacos, but you can basically make it 4 since they stack 2 tortillas together! I got a horchata ($7) to help with the spice. We also stayed late enough for their late night happy hour and got the guacamole for $7. Guac was honestly a little too sour for me (lots of lime juice), but the tortilla chips were sooo good. They were super crunchy and perfect for dipping. If you count each order as 4 tacos then it's pretty worth it - otherwise I think it's quite pricy. I think if you want a fancier Mexican restaurant, this would be a good choice in New West. They don't rush you and it's quite comfortable as well to have a night out. I don't normally leave bad reviews, but this place absolutely deserves it. Our experience here was nothing short of a nightmare. We had one of the worst dining experiences ever at El Santo restaurant. We waited over an hour and a half just to get our appetizers and main dishes. The waiters seemed completely uninterested and brushed us off every time we tried to ask about our order. When the food finally arrived, it was lukewarm at best and definitely not worth the wait. The flavors were disappointing, nothing tasted fresh or well-prepared. To make things worse, the owner was incredibly rude, dismissive and completely unprofessional when we politely tried to share our concerns. It's honestly shocking that a business treats paying customers this way. This was an awful experience from start to finish!! It really left a bad taste in my mouth -- literally and figuratively. We won't be coming back, and I'll be sure to tell everyone I know to avoid this place. There are plenty of Mexican restaurants that actually respect their customers and know how to serve decent food -- this one is an embarrassment to the industry. read more

The enchiladas were very tasty and the red sauce full of flavor. The guacamole was good, but the "trio" tasted like three bowls of the same guacamole with different ingredients sprinkled on top, I kind of expected the flavors described to be infused into the actual guacamole. Service was a bit lacking, not bad, but we would have ordered another drink given the opportunity. I've been in several times and the food is always quite tasty, however the servers are often inattentive and awkward. On a recent trip, someone dining next to me found a hair in their guacamole and instead of apologizing and fixing it, the server debated whose hair it could be and proclaimed that it didn't look like the hair of anyone working in the kitchen. The exchange ended with the diner saying "but I think we can agree it shouldn't be in there." Things happen and I don't think any restaurant should be judged on one instance of something like that, but the response from the server really exemplified the service experience when dining at El Santo. The food is prepared with care and is quite delicious. I'd love to see a few more plant-based items on the menu, but there are always a couple of options in each category. The restaurant itself is comfortable and an enjoyable place to visit. The only minor inconvenience is that the back of the restaurant is nearly devoid of cell service and there is no wifi available. On several occasions, I have arrived to a half full restaurant and been refused service because we didn't make a reservation in advance. They very clearly could have fit us in, but wouldn't, so be sure to make a reservation before you go! read more

I didn't like this place at all and I'll tell you why. I made a reservation and when we walked in the reception was cold, indifferent and disinterested. Our guests had already been seated, so when we arrived at our table, way in the back of the restaurant, I asked my friends why they sat us there? and she told me that the waitress had said that the restaurant was having a party, which was not the case at all ...later I found out. So, we were sat honestly in an area of the restaurant that looked like the storage room. No ambiance, no proper lighting....just off and cold. The food was ok at best. The salsa trio was disappointing, as the supposed trio of salsa flavours was actually just one flavour with three different colours. They all tasted the same and not home made. We had the tongue, cod and beef cheek tacos and they were not impressive at all. The tacos were soggy and very unimaginative. The only one that was slightly better was the cod. The drinks were a rip off. We ordered the Guay and Chida Margarita...one at $13 and the other $17. They were served cheaply and uncreative in a whiskey glass rather than a proper Margarita glass. For that price you'd expect twice the amount served creatively in the proper glass....I can suggest 3 Mexican places right off the bat where they make amazing Margaritas the way they are supposed to be made. Service was terrible. The entire time we were there we felt that she was trying to rush us out. We asked for more chips for our left over salsa...she came by and literally put 3 chips in the bowl. Yah....3 chips! We thought she'd be back with the rest....so we asked her again and her response was, "yeah well there's still some in there, but sure"....wow. My husband was still finishing his Margarita when she came by and took his glass away. At this point, feeling rushed and with the crappy service, we were just having a chat before we were going to leave, and after she had asked us for the 3rd time if we need anything else, and we said no we're good for now, she says, "how about the bill?" .....I just wanted to leave now. Lovely place. Nice ambience. Good service. The drinks were good except for the bad BC wine. I don't know why restaurants think they have to serve that crap. The food was OK, except their signature brussels sprouts, which were loaded with garlic. They were actually hot with garlic and this was cooked garlic, so they must've used a ton of it. I like garlic, but not this much. Also, they were extraordinarily salty. My date couldn't eat any because she's allergic to garlic and I ate some, but I left most of them. I didn't even want to take them home with me. They should warn you when there's that much garlic in a dish. The trio of guacamole was very good, my date had the two tiny little empanadas for 24 bucks which were good but expensive, but this brussels sprout dish was horrific. Very, very salty. Even though this is primarily a taco place, my friend and I were looking for a brunch spot in New West for Sunday brunch, and I thought the menu here looked interesting. The restaurant is located in downtown New West near the SkyTrain station. Parking is all paid, with the spots in front of the restaurant charging $3.25 per hour. The restaurant was fairly empty when we arrived around 12:30, though we were lucky enough to snag the last open booth. To start, my friend got coffee ($4.75), and I got the freshly squeezed juice of the day ($6), which was guava. We both enjoyed our respective drinks. For food, we each got one of their egg benedicts. Mine was the Costillita with short rib ($18), and his was with roasted vegetables ($16). The benedicts here are some of the most unique I've seen, as they're served on top of a cornbread skillet as opposed to an English muffin. Because of this, we both really enjoyed our dishes. I asked for the hollandaise sauce to not be included with my dish, so essentially I was eating poached eggs with short rib and cornbread. Even without any sauce, I found my dish to be flavorful. I was also very surprised by the large portion of short ribs; it was probably double what I was expecting to get. It was also very soft and tender and went really well with the runny egg yolk. Lets start off by saying the positive points. Great ambience and lovely decor. The space is well set up and has a variety of seating options. Second was the location. Its very central as its downtown New West an only a couple blocks from New West Skytrain. The service was actually good compared to other reviews. Helpful and patient servers. Lets start off with saying that the price point for Mexican food is way beyond what it should be for standard Mexican fare. $16 for just 2 tacos means $8.00 a Taco which are not even spectacular so it is ridiculous. The Appies were not bad and seem to be the best part. For Main I ordered the Chicken Mole.. At $38 you would think it its made in Oaxaca itself. They claimed it takes them 3 days to make the sauce. What I do believe is that the chicken was left outside the fridge for 3 days. Horrible and gamey chicken. Thought it was rooster or Hen but the size was regular chicken size. I feel like they literally bought the worst quality chicken, microwaved it and then put Mole sauce over it. Now its 1/2 a chicken so can't complain about size but when the flavour is horrid, an entire chicken would not have made the difference. Its served with corn tortillas and thats it. My Mexican babysitter always said the Chicken should be quickly pre boiled to remove toxins and then re cooked in some spices and garlic and then used IF it was not going to be fresh. It's always an amazing time when I visit El Santo. No two visits are the same, and I wouldn't have it any other way! Take your time with the menu and order anything you're unsure of - you won't regret it. Trendy spot in the heart of New West that's open till 11PM on Fridays and Saturdays. Comfortable environment with well spaced out tables and a decent amount of staff to serve the number of patrons there were. We tried this place based on a friend's recommendation and a late night craving for Mexican food. The Guacamole trio at $15 was a little underwhelming. Homemade tortilla chips were on the firmer side and the presentation is so-so. Definitely would not reorder on future visits. Overall they were a little bland but good on the server for topping up our chips without us asking. The Tacos were packed quite full and at $11 for two they're fairly priced. The Pescado (fish taco) was very bland and the fish itself only tasted of the oil used to cook it. The fish reminds me of the simulated fish at Mila Plant Based in Chinatown. Generous portion of fish but not very tasty. The Al Pastor tacos however were great and the salsa had a good but not overwhelming amount of kick. Perhaps the dish that stole the show was the Carne Ahumada which was a perfectly prepared steak. The meat itself was a bit lean for my liking but this dish is still absolutely worth trying. Overall El Santo definitely has a loungey feel and is a decent place to share drinks and food with some friends. First time dining in the area and was surprised by the decoration and atmosphere of the restaurant. I ordered the El Pastor tacos and Pescado Tacos. El Pastor was filled with flavour while the Pescado was lacking a little bit in flavour. They have a really great drink selection, would be a perfect place for large parties or a night out! Service was a little slow but she was kind. My only major complaint is there were small little flies around. I understand this may be hard to control but it was an issue when the flies were over the food and drinks! I will be back to try out other things on the menu :) read more

It has been a HOT HOT minute since I have written a review!! And on top of that, as I write this review, it will be the hottest day we have had in the Lower Mainland. I remember this is my first restaurant back from the second shut down of COVID and I went in with a reservation, as one does more often now because of COVID. The place was STILL packed when we arrived, with each table filled with their own bubble; instead of being placed beside another table, we were seated in their little out cove with my party of 4 friends. The hostess was extremely nice and you can totally see that "smizing" action, she was totally working it. I was looking forward to a cup of Horchata, but because of COVID they didn't have Horchata, which was what I was looking forward to, but instead I ordered a Jarritos, tamarind flavour. I wasn't planning to drink that night since I drove. For those who don't know what Horchata is, it is a sweet rice cinnamon milk. We started off with the Ceviche as we waited for everyone to get ready to order for the night. I have been searching for a good ceviche place my whole life in Vancouver, and this place was not it. I was a little disappointed, and looks like a proper ceviche place wasn't going to happen. Oh and note, their portion from Ceviche to Tortia Chip ratio was perfect. I ordered a plate of Brussel Sprouts on the side for everyone to share too, and it wasn't that good. I might have wanted something better from it, but it was just ok. Would not order again. Each of my party ordered 3 tacos each since it seemed like they only had the tacos that night. I realized they were not prepared at all that night, but it is okay since we are during a period of the pandemic. I had the Lengua (Beef Toungue), Pollo (chicken) and the Barbacoa. The tongue was diced into smaller pieces and I felt like they could have just sliced it instead to still give a proper texture, but it is okay, it is their style. The Barbacoa is perfectly spiced, and extremely smooth, braised to the perfection. And the chicken was surprisingly different, it could be their haberno salsa, which gives it that delicious bite, but it wasn't that bad. Overall, the night went ok and I had a fantastic time seeing all my close friends again over some delicious tacos and a small little reunion. And I am back writing on Yelp again~!! I've been recommend to try El Santo a couple of times but never got the chance to. I was craving Mexican food, and El Santo came to my mind. It was a short drive from Richmond, and because we came at a later time we avoided all traffic. To make sure, I also made reservation via OpenTable 30 minutes before arriving. We ordered the guacamole trio, pescado (fish) tacos, al pastor (pork) tacos, and carne ahumada. The guacamole trio ($15) was a nice starter but nothing special, or something you can't make at home. Frankly, we ordered it because I wanted chips... a big plus was they do top up your chips ! The tacos were fairly priced at $11/ order (2 tacos/order). I preferred the al pastor over the pescado since it was more flavorful. It had a better balance of spice, tang, and fattiness from the pork. Whereas the pescado was a bit bland and almost seemed it was under seasoned. We also had the carne ahumada ($30), it was a smoky wagyu flank steak - this dish was the most unique out of all the mains. The smokiness was evenly distributed (even the veggies were smoky!) and paired nicely with the sauce. This wagyu flank was cooked just as requested, med rare, and has a nice outer crust thanks to the rub. My wife tried the EMPANADAS DE POLLO which were tasty and not overly filling. If you get the chance to grab some takeaway, from El Santo during Covid19, do it! It's such great value and tastes the exact same as back in the day of dining in. I picked up the margarita guey kit ($96) and it was unbelievably delicious. It included a bottle of tequila, Cointreau, a martini shaker, two cute glasses, margarita mix, salt rim, dried limes and their homemade chips! Everything they do is so spot on! Came for brunch (which doesn't open till 11:30am?? Weird!) and was told that half of the brunch menu was from their old brunch menu and half were new items they had just introduced in the past week. We shared the barbacoa de cachete tacos and the costilla benedict. First off, I have to agree with some reviewers that portion to price ratio is horrible! The benedict was $16 and you get a tiny square about the size of your hand and fingers. Presentation was a bit sloppy although I did enjoy the cornbread flavour and the eggs were cooked perfectly. I could get double the amount of food at a downtown brunch establishment that opened earlier and had a better location, with the same great flavours. The cachete tacos were very good but the pickled watermelon rinds could go better diced rather than as two huge chunks on top of the taco. I prefer the cachete tacos from la taqueria. All in all, we felt the value wasn't there and for a New Westminster establishment serving lunch they will need to up their game! Went tonight for the Dineout, but my girlfriend and I quickly changed our minds once we saw the rest of the menu. The Dineout menu is $45pp if anyone is interested. The Food: - Happy Hour is 3 to 5:30 so we got the Brussel sprouts, corn fritters and 2 margheritas - Brussel Sprouts: $8 for happy hour. Solid dish. Great char and comes served on top of something that tastes like a spicy hummus. Whatever it was, it was good. Definitely getting this again. - Corn Fritters: $8 for happy hour. Another solid dish. Crispy outside, soft and warm inside. It paired perfectly with the Jalapeno Jelly - Chilli Rellano: $18. Massive portion. Reminded me of a lasagna the way it was served, but with almost a cabbage roll flavour. Weird description yes, but there was so much flavour. Probably going to be my go to dish. - Tuna Loin: $26. This is the reason why I'm giving the restaurant 3 stars. This most expensive dish we got and it wasn't good...at all. Overcooked Tuna and the corn gnocchi was almost too grainy and very dry. My husband and I dropped in on El Santo for happy hour last night (Friday). We were quickly seated in a deuce by the front window as it was still early. I have been here several times and it's always my go-to for happy hour, as well as brunch. I really need to branch out and try the full dinner menu one of these days! We split the following (all from the happy hour menu except the margarita): * Trio of salsas $6 * El Santo Huevo $6 x 2 * Taco of the day $8 * House margarita $? X 2 * House sangria $6 As always, service was attentive and friendly. Each dish arrived as it was prepared so we meandered through our food in a pleasant manner. The El Santo Huevo is one of my husband's most favourite foods IN THE WORLD and once again, it delivered. A perfect almost-runny egg, wrapped in chorizo and then again in masa. The entire thing is deep fried and comes to your table piping hot with a side of habanero apple jam. It's the perfect mix of creaminess, crunch, sweetness and spice. If I don't hold him back, my husband can put away at least three of these calorie bombs! The other dishes were equally yummy and as I remembered. Uniquely flavoured salsas, tangy tacos and cocktails that taste like they have no liquor in them and can be consumed endlessly. No surprise, but we'll be back. read more

I think the El Santo has really delicious food, does it warrant the prices? If you think about the care they put into sourcing their ingredients, I'd say so. In terms of service, I went this week and it took 40 minutes for my table to receive drinks or appies (we ordered chips and salsa so it was confusing to why at least chips couldn't be rushed so we wouldn't be empty handed for so long). I love the Chile Rellano, they are a bit heavy handed on the seasoning salt for their chips, churros were great and a good portion to share with friends. Not the first time I've had less than stellar service and had to wait for a slow kitchen so seems like it's a trend. 3 stars for the yummy food and I'll most likely still come back and just hope they aren't as busy and can handle the orders coming in. read more

Husband and I got takeout from here for the first time after hearing great things. We live in Richmond but he commutes to Coquitlam some days, so he picked up El Santo last Friday on the way home and it did not disappoint! We chose to order large plates instead of tacos since we figured those would get pretty soggy on his 35 minute drive home. I had the chile relleno and he had the enchiladas suizas -- both were nicely seasoned, full of flavor, and reheated well! The chile relleno wasn't spicy and came with a side of green rice. Husband reports the enchiladas did have a little bit of a kick, they didn't come with any accompaniments -- I felt that the price ($22) was too high given it only came with four very small enchiladas. The portion on the chile relleno was much more reasonable. We'll definitely order again, super happy to have a Mexican place to grab take-out from! read more

Cool design to the place and great atmosphere, weird to be in New West feels like some trendy Gastown resto (not a bad thing) I love how I don't have to go downtown to get good food and cool hang out. There was 5 of us. We all ordered our own dishes, but they encourage sharing plates. My husband and I ordered several tacos el pastor which was good $9 and chilaqules pork belly on top of chips $18 similar to nachos. For dessert we had churros with dulce de leche dip $8. I thought the food tasted good our only complain was the chilqules had too much sauce it made all the chips very saggy and very vinegary. No one in the table could finish it. Everything else had great flavour. Service was also great. This area is becoming very trendy, I love all the new local eats. After a very negative experience a few years ago where we seemed to be quite literally forgotten and ignored, we decided to give El Santo another try. I want to say outright that the food and drinks were tasty and the staff were polite and friendly. These are the most important factors in my books, so yay! The restaurant is popular so, unsurprisingly, it is quite noisy. Unfortunately, the staff seems to struggle with the workload. We ordered drinks and an appetizer that arrived in a reasonably timely fashion. The server then took our meal orders. I ordered corn bread (a small plate) and one order of tacos, while my husband ordered a variety of tacos. The corn bread arrived quite quickly, well ahead of our other entrees. I didn't want to eat it until all of our meal had arrived, which led to it being entirely room temperature by the time I cut into it as the rest of our order took a very long time to appear. My partner took the delivery of our entrees as an opportunity to order a second drink (his glass had been empty for a while). When I neared the centre of the corn bread, I realised that it was nearly raw in the middle. The server came to check on us as we neared the end of our tacos and I reported the undercooked cornbread. She immediately took it back to the kitchen. She returned a while later and assured me that it would be taken off of the bill and that the kitchen was making a new one. Unfortunately, we had just realised that we needed to head out soon as we had a reservation for Moodswing (we had not anticipated dinner taking quite so long), so I told her not to worry about it as we were on a bit of a timeline. After she left, we wondered whether my partner's drink would be on the bill because he still hadn't received it yet. To our server's credit, the bill arrived promptly with the cornbread removed and the only drinks on the tally were ones we had actually received. Overall, a good meal but service felt disorganised and slow. I'm not sure if this is due to the current labour challenges or problems in the workflow. I lean towards the latter as a neighbouring table that arrived at least 15 minutes after us managed to make it through an appetizer, drinks, entrees, and a dessert before we asked for the bill. We might try dining in with them on a weeknight sometime in the future, but for now we'll stick with ordering their food through a delivery service. read more

We weren't very hungry so we just came with the intention of grabbing some tacos as a quick meal before going somewhere for dessert. We tried the Pescado and Barbacao de Cachete. I thought they were very tasty, but the Barbacao de Cachete (4.5/5) definitely won for me. The meat was delicious and went really well with the salsa that came on the side. The tacos were pretty standard taco size, but I appreciate that they stacked them with toppings. The Pescado (3.5/5) was good too, but probably not the best one I've had in Vancouver. The fish was cooked well, I just wish the coating was a little bit thicker/crispier. Nothing really blew me away but the quality of the ingredients were good and the food was tasty. It was a little bit on the pricey side. The tacos were probably just a couple more dollars than most other places, so the extra price might be worth it if you're staying for the ambiance. We didn't try any other dishes besides the tacos, so I can't comment on the quality of them. Although we did look over at another table and the big plates did look pretty big. The decor in here is definitely nice though, I think it'd be really cute if you were coming here for drinks. The servers were also really attentive and friendly, often coming back to check up on us. read more

Last night at El Santo's was a great experience worth mentioning on here. From the greeting at the entrance to our wonderful waitress who was so knowledgeable and absolutely sweet (not in a fake way) to all amazing food...I could go on an on. The food here is spectacular . I would highly recommend their chef's tasting menu...yummy goodness . Their drink menu is very extensive and unique. Sorry guys, I was too busy eating and drinking everything that I forgot to take a picture. El Santo is perfect for date nights, special occasions, or if you just wanna try some seriously delicious food. They have a special section for larger groups too which is perfect for birthday party's, staggets, work place get together you name it. So, give them a try! read more

I was so disappointed by this restaurant. I've heard great things but.... The place is loud and not much space between tables. The prices are ridiculous. I ordered a taco. Just NO. The service was slow as well. I'll never go back. Waste of time. read more
