We got the Thursday burrito special with chile verde which is $8.99+tax and a fish taco. The burrito is nothing special and the meat is quite dry. But it's big and good value - quantity over quality. The fish taco is also okay - the lettuce with the sauce is a bit watery. I stopped in El Sobroso on my way to Carizzo Plain to see the wildflower bloom. Buttonwillow is the closest town, and there is no food or services for 70 miles until you hit the coast. So, I loaded up on a thiiiic breakfast burrito with egg and chorizo. It was very good. Homemade chorizo, plus cilantro, beans, and salsa. I hiked around and I am still stuffed in the late afternoon. With road trips and an electric vehicle, we're always looking for a food stop close to a charger. This review is for the take-out food experience. We ordered ceviche, carnitas tacos, chicken quesadilla, and Chile Relleno to go. No problems ordering and we got our food in about 15 minutes. Then we drove to the EV charging area about 5 miles away and started eating our food on top of the car. Not an ideal situation since it is HOT late spring in this area. Had a problem before we started eating - the bag was filled with red liquid when we took out the food. Ceviche was pretty liquidy and spilled all over the place. It should be placed in a soup cup with lid for to go orders. The food: Recommended without reservation: Chile Relleno - if you like cheese, this is your dish. Cheese to the max and very flavorful. Comes with rice and beans. Recommended: Ceviche - aside from the liquid disaster, the dish was pretty tasty. Very shrimp forward, but fresh tasting. Comes with some tostadas for texture. Could have been better: Chicken quesadilla - lots of chicken and cheese. My kids ate it without complaints. I found the meat to be a bit dry and the whole dish was not very flavorful. I would recommend eating this with a healthy portion of salsa. Carnitas tacos - similar to the chicken, the meat was pretty dry. Flavors were ok, but I left the entree a bit disappointed. read more

We were looking for a place to eat on our drive south, and we came across this place on Yelp with great ratings. I neglected to look how far off the freeway it was; so just a heads up, that it's 4 miles from the freeway exit. Thankfully it was worth the short detour! The specialty here is seafood and I'd read on Yelp that the shrimp tacos were amazing so that's what I ordered. We got a quesadilla for our toddler and my husband got carne asada tacos. We also got an order of fries just in case for our toddler. I loved my shrimp tacos! These were very delicious and filling. My husband really liked his carne asada tacos and thought the meat portion was generous. It had huge pieces in it. The quesadilla, as well, was stuffed with cheese! The quesadilla came with tomatoes, lettuce and sour cream on the side. The tacos were $2 each and the shrimp ones were $3. We came on the early side of dinner so it wasn't busy. The service was friendly and prompt and we had our food in no time. My shrimp came out piping hot. Overall, if we found ourselves needing a bite to eat in Buttonwillow again, we wouldn't hesitate to come here! read more

C. is having the Menudo ( only on weekends) and I am having the Breakfast burrito. We both are enjoying the flavors. We stopped off here this past Friday on our way going south. As I looked at the menu, I was told the prices aren't up to date. I asked what the price would be for the item I was looking at (chicken quesadilla) and the current price is $7 more than what is listed on the menu. Seems shady. I visited El Sabroso on the recommendation of a coworker who has RAVED about their shrimp tacos for months. Located in the heart of Buttonwillow, it's a convenient spot for anyone on Hwy 58 or traveling through western Kern County. It's unassuming - just a simple red street front building. Inside, it's your run of the mill small town, provides the interior that functions, but isn't fancy, eatery. The first thing I noticed was the menu boards with an extensive list of options. For a mom and pop joint in rural Kern county, I was surprised to see how many seafood dishes they had. If Mexican isn't your thing, they also offered basic hamburgers and fries. To top it off, they have an extensive salsa bar to the side of the register, with everything from green salsa to chunky pico and whole peppers. On my first visit I opted for my coworker's recommended shrimp tacos. At $2,79 for each one, I figured I'd grab a third taco to round out my meal, and also asked for a carnitas taco. The shrimp tacos were much larger than I anticipated. Each one had several shrimp, caramelized onion, fresh lettuce, and both crema and cotija cheese. The flavors were spot on, the shrimp well cooked, and the taco overall tasting much like fresh taco stall tacos I've had in Mexico. My coworker was right, and I certainly hope to head back for more! My carnitas taco, while much smaller, was still flavorful, with a bit of crisp to the carnitas. It didn't come topped with much, but I opted to add the previously mentioned salsa bar toppings and was perfectly satisfied. Later in the week my work brought me by again, so I decided to try the enchiladas with shredded beef. The enchiladas were slightly smaller than I've had elsewhere, but at $7.99 for two enchiladas and a full side of rice and beans, I felt it was an appropriate amount. They were topped generously with cheese. The rice on the side was nice and fluffy, while the beans had the distinct creaminess of traditional refried beans. A nice bit of cardio might be needed to burn off those beans! Service was friendly and fast on both visits, and even with only a couple employees working they managed to feed our entire group in relatively short order. Prices were very reasonable given the proportions, and I appreciated the number of items on the menu. A few more traditional dishes were available (menudo anyone?), and at some point I'll absolutely have to try their tortas. read more
