My bff has been telling me about this place, so I decided to try it for lunch. There are plenty of dishes to choose from. There is a lunch menu and a happy hour menu. I decided to do a glass of red wine and the shrimp saltado off the lunch menu. The wine was a great choice of cabernet. The saltado had a nice kick to it, it was fresh and pretty darn good. I was going to say this is the worst Peruvian place I've eaten at in the world, and I've eaten at maybe 3 or 4 dozen, but that would be inaccurate. This is to Peruvian food what Lean Cuisine is to Italian food, or what Chat GPT3 is to good prose. If someone were to put a gun to my head and ask what nationality the food was from, I may guess that an amateur from, say, Fairfield Connecticut read a cookbook from the 1950s and made a first attempt at something vaguely Latin American, but it would be a coin flip as to which country. Sauces were entirely wrong, and universally awful. Fish was a breaded mush. Calamari was so rubbery that it felt like it was made of the same material as a super ball. Highly recommend this place. It's in the busy part of Fairfield, but there is a parking lot in front. The restaurant smells so nice, like vanilla candles. It's quiet and calm inside. Small restaurant with cute tables and decor. The staff is always very friendly. The service can be slow, but we I find that in most Peruvian restaurants. We ordered the mussels appetizer, which they serve on spoons instead of in the shell. Love this! I had the chaufa with shrimp. Delicious. We ended with the flan. Best I've ever had. COME HERE FOR SOUP THIS WINTER *Get chupe con camarones (shrimp soup). And get it spicy!!!* Solid Peruvian restaurant. The fried yuca with huancaina (cheese sauce) is an excellent appetizer. The chupe - as you may have gathered - is really good. It is a creamy chicken/shrimp broth that is absolutely perfect in the winter. It comes with HUGE shrimp, soft boiled eggs, chewy diced cheese, rice, half a small potato, diced peas and diced carrots. They made it spicy (on request, and highly recommended) with an aromatic peruvian pepper which added not only a great flavor but an excellent spice. The rice and potato make the soup filling - you won't feel hungry after (unlike some soups). But I didn't like the fact that my bill said "suggested gratuity" 20% already included in my total. I would have paid a good tip anyways but I like that to be my choice, and not feel like I am forced to do so. First time eating at El Recoto. The restaurant is very nice, they immediately waited on us. The restaurant does take out as well. We visited during Lent and since it was a Friday we were looking for something different but specifically seafood. We ordered the arroz con mariscos and it was very good. It had a great taste to it and the portions were huge. We also ordered the Yuca Huancaina which were served in a spicy cheese sauce. The prices were very good and the portions even better. It was a good meal and I look forward to coming back and trying some other items on the menu. Prices were reasonable and entree portion was large and juicy. They have an outside patio in the back so can easily accomodate a party. Am told to call a week in advance for party reservations. Inside a bit narrow so tables are for 4. Casual environment. They share parking with a sports bar but hasn't been a problem so far. Would definitely recommend you go. read more

Speaking with the staff apparently they have a location in Stamford so this is their 2nd spot. They don't have a liquor license but BYOB is encouraged and they have glasses for your drinks and wine.
