I don't know if there's new management but I just ordered nachos con carne and a torta and there were only 3 jalapeños on the nachos. What used to be a dense meal it's now not worth the $18 charge. My husband and I walked by El Rey Latino many times and we didn't pay attention to them due to their humble exterior. Their reviews on yelp are also not outstanding but they are one of the most popular restaurants on seamless for delivery. It's Cinco de Mayo today so we decided to have Mexican food for dinner. We ordered Bistec Huarache ($10.45), Carne Enchilada Quesadilla ($9.1), Calamari Fritos ($9.9) and 3 Leches Cake ($4.7). We scheduled to have delivery at 6:00pm and they were really on time. No frills, and good comfort food. I ordered a Rabo Guisado (Stewed oxtail). It came with rice and beans and a good amount of oxtail stew. The only saving grace is that the food was good, otherwise I would have given it a poor rating. I ordered online and went to pickup. The ladies who were working there didn't seem to care who was waiting, and didn't even bat an eye at me as I stood there waiting for 5 minutes (no one else was there). I have never been in here, but order food from here all the time. The tacos are so good. My go to are always tacos and empanadas. I ordered a gordita once that was good, but mainly stick to what I know and love. Their carne asada, al pastor and chorizo tacos are my go tos. I always get a beef empanada too, a little greasy, but still delicious. The prices are reasonable and the delivery is always fast. I recommend it. This review is just for their maduros. Soooo good. I could just eat them and nothing else. I actually drove more than 30 minutes one night just to get maduros from this place. Yes, most Latino restaurants serve them, but not all serve good ones. Theirs are always the right ripeness, so they're sweet and sometimes gooey. So good! read more

Just when I thought I couldn't find a nice spot that reminds me of home (Los Angeles) where in every other corner you find delicious Mexican meals, I found it! This location is the cutest and the most comforting to me (a non-local). It makes me feel at home and their menu choices are spot on! I ordered chilaquiles verdes and a torta of huevo con jamón. Chilaquiles verdes are rare for restaurants to offer, to be honest, and not my favorite, but I was craving chilaquiles so why not. They were delicious as you have an option to choose your protein (beef or chicken). I went with chicken. The chilaquiles did need a bit of salt BUT salt is one thing that humans can add to taste. This was not a deal breaker for me as they are well served! The torta de jamón brought tears to my eyes because they make them exactly like my mom would. The torta is quiet big and it has avocado, lettuce, tomato, jam, jalapeño, a bit of beans and other delicious ingredients. This was my fave pick of the two. Service was quick and friendly. This location is so clean too. So far, probably the cleanest I've seen in New York. I definitely recommend order for pick in person and or walk in order then wait in your car. I wanted to try this place for a while and finally got to today. Got in at exactly 1:00pm and there were only 3 tables of people and 1 other person ordering take out for a total of 5 customers and a ton of people in the kitchen. Ordered the pernil lunch special and asked about the chicken lunch special. I asked if it was 1/2 a chicken and the lady said yes. So I said ok let me have that and she said oh well that is the meal then. So I asked again what does the lunch special have then and she said 1/4 a chicken. So... a 1/4 chicken lunch special is $7.25 but the regular meal is $6.95. The math just doesn't add up... But anyways ended up just ordering a full chicken by itself. As we stood there waiting for the food. Noticed the plates all the customers had were huge... Like family sized platter huge. Definitely not the same portion size that you get for take out. Got our food and I asked for extra green sauce. The lady said the sauce doesn't come with it and how many did I want. How weird is that? I asked for 2, but I probably should've gotten 6. Got home and noticed the chicken was super small. 1/2 of a chicken is basically the size of a 1/4 chicken you get at Peruvian places. Also stupid me, I went against my gut and ordered this knowing that this was a Mexican/Spanish place... Anyways fine the chicken was super small, more of a cornish hen than a chicken. What sucks is the the chicken was sooooo overcooked. The dark meat was so dry. The white meat, well I don't think I even need to get into it. In all honesty I have no idea if flavor wise it was good, but I have to say it was the worst roast chicken I have ever had in my life. The Pernill was decent. The pork was dry but pretty tasty. Definitely needs sauce. The rice was pretty decent and so were the plantains. Willing to give this place another shot but I'm going to listen to my gut and only order tacos or burritos. read more

This food never disappoints. Anything I've had a craving for and purchased I have left satisfied. I usually order my husband steak and onions with jalapeños and tomatoes. Had the carne guisada and Gordita chicharron. Both really delicious and flavorful. Definitely too much for one person. Love the toastiness of the Gordita. Not much chicharron but the flavoring made up for that. The guisada was good -- it had beans and two pieces of plantains so the sweetness of that was a nice balance to the heavier dish. However I must admit the carne was a bit tough. I've had pernil from here before it's much more tender and flavorful so I'd recommend that over the carne. Otherwise, great experience! I am changing my review/stars from 5 to 1. We used to be happy and loyal customers. Even recommending them to friends. But they must've changed management, bc customer service has gone bad, and prices are higher unnecessarily. Almost half up. A female worker charged me almost $10 for a $6 order of maduros, and I still left her my change as tip. I didn't think to question her bc I thought I could trust this establishment and bc I remember they had raised prices. And she also made wait incredibly and unjustifiably long, as if they were making them On the spot. Which they were not. And now when I realized the price difference and called them about it, they're claiming to not knowing anything about it and giving the run around to give it back. So apparently now they steal money. The women there are very arrogant. Some more than others. And the beans are so thick. Not juicy and flavorful at all. At least the black beans; which weren't like that a year or two ago when we first started to get food there. Also the seasoning is on top of the food, not cooked within for flavor. Tacos were pretty good and really filling. Chicken Tinga tacos was pretty good and very savory. The empanadas were also pretty good.

Their service has always been very quick and timely. Food is delicious! My favourite has always been the shrimp bowl; with the bowl you get guacamole in it. Lately they have been skimping on the guac though, they used to give more than that (minus one star!) Philly cheesesteak is decent. The sandwich is a footlong and they cut it in half for you. It comes with your choice of cheese, green bell pepper, onions, and of course the steak. The bread is nice and soft, steak is good, however they need to add more cheese! It was very little cheese for a philly cs. ! Needs improvement on that. For $3 a taco isn't so bad either. I got the soft corn tortillas (you can opt for cripsy but I perfer the soft ones), served with onions and cilantro. Add [Lettuce, Tomato, Sour Cream, Cheese] for $0.75 and [avocado] for another $0.75. Cheesy fries is self explanatory, though maybe they should have sprinkled a little salt because despite the cheese, it was a little on the bland side. read more

I hate having to write bad reviews. As someone that used to work in the restaurant industry, I know how important it is to have a happy customer. This place however has lost that sense. Backstory: before Quarantine and pandemic. Whenever we wanted something quick, decent and Latin. We would order from them. We normally order the same 2 dishes. Mixed rice (yellow/white) with salad and fried chicken or the steak combo. During Quarantine. We wanted to keep small businesses open. So we would order from them. As well as other places. They've treated us nicely. So we wanted to make sure they stay in businesses. After Quarantine: everything seem to have gone downhill faster than an Olympic skiier. The past few orders they've had messed, and gave us an attitude. One incident they gave us all white rice and no beans. And they gave us diet coke. When we asked for ginger ale. When called they said we clearly said diet coke and argued with us. And said that they don't do mixed rice.. but we've been ordering that for 4 years. And when we told them suddenly it's "extra". When the delivery guy came. He made a snide remark and said "next time order the correct thing". My wife spoke to someone else and they said "sorry she's new and she didn't know and they will speak to the delivery about the comment". The person said they know who we are and gave descriptions of us. To prove she knows us. Fine. OK. We'll let it slide. The most recent incident. We order the same thing from, yet again. This time. They gave all yellow rice and salad with some red sauce (more on that later). We called and let them know that we didn't get salad dressing and the rice was wrong. The girl who answered said they aren't going to send the delivery guy to give us the white rice and as they gave us the green sauce as a courtesy. We told them we didn't ask for green sauce. We asked for oil and vinegar, but they insisted we said salsa verde. Which didn't get either. Again they said they don't do mixed rice. But we've been ordering that for years. Then all of a sudden it was "oh we're busy". So my wife asked for the person's name. She refused to tell us. The cherry on top was when they called back just to say "were you the one who just called. Well, next time have someone else take the order". We don't even know who this person was. If this is how they treat people who supposed during "unprecedented times". We order takeout from here via Seamless very often. The food is always good and the delivery is super fast. One time, the guy was at my door 15 minutes after I placed the order! I usually like their burrito bowls and their chimichangas. Their empanadas aren't bad either. I always order their guacamole also. It's a bit on the tangy side because of all the lemon juice they tend to mix in to preserve it. I don't care much for the chip it the guac comes with but I always have some of my own extra salty corn chips ready which goes very well with it. I've ordered here a few times for lunch and always enjoy my meal. I usually go in the store and order take out. I've read the poor reviews of customers ordering online/ phone. The staff are always pleasant and works quickly to keep the lines moving. I usually order one of the lunch specials and the food has been delicious. There's always a small crowd during lunch but the wait isn't long. From the roasted chicken to the pork with rice and beans, it's all fulfilling. I guess reading the reviews it was a hit or miss thing. We ordered 4 each of hard and soft chicken tacos, 2 chicken burritos, a order of chips and guacamole. A diet Pepsi and 2 snapples for 55 bucks. I was told 45 on the phone when I asked for a total. As I was ordering the lady was taking my order and talking to someone else at the same time. She asked me to repeat myself a few times cause she wasn't paying attention. She apologized. I get my order close to an hour of ordering. Take my first bite of the hard taco and was hit with an intense salty mess. The chicken was extremely dry also. Looks good but looks are deceiving! I've never had a bad experience here and my delivery has always been on time and accurate, and often delivered before the ETA. They have amazing food and they're my go to when I'm craving pernil or a cheese empanada. We've had takeout from this restaurant three times already and I'll say that each experience has gotten better. The first time was a disaster. Waited 40 minutes as the only person there to do take out and on top of that, they got the order wrong. Asked for a beef soft taco and got a taco shell salad instead. So we gave them another try and did delivery. Not too bad with timing but the food was cold. So disappointing. Had potential but cold food ruins everything. Decided to give them a third try and I guess this was the charm. Food came hot and fresh. Delivery timing was good. The tacos are probably my favorite. The spicy beef and pork tacos were full of meat. Great flavor. Green sauce adds a nice kick. The mix fajita platter with steak, chicken and shrimp is good. Nice flavor and love the additional sauce in pan to add to my rice and beans. The seasoned chicken fillet is good but I prefer the dish with more sauce. The seasoned chicken comes with a shredded salad. Plenty of food for a decent price that will certainly give you leftovers for the next day. If they keep this consistency up (the good experience), I may have found my new favorite neighborhood restaurant for Spanish food. read more

I ordered 2 carnitas and 2 chicken tacos. The tacos were actually really good and authentic Mexican. The cilantro and tomato were really fresh. This was my second time ordering from El Rey Latino. Their empanadas are delicious, but nothing else I have ever ordered has been that great. I ordered a Greek Salad tonight (I realize that this is a Mexican restaurant so ya ya I know my expectations shouldn't be high) but the salad was completely saturated with water which is gross and unacceptable, even if "Greek salad" isn't their particular cuisine. The quesadilla I ordered was soooo gross. Honestly. First of all, it was on a corn tortilla which I think is odd. I've never personally had a quesadilla on anything other than flour. And to top it off there was probably a full cup of chopped chicken thighs and hardly any cheese ! The bottom of the quesadilla was wet too, complete turn off. Just had a horrible experience with the women who answered the phone and took my order. First the order was taken incorrectly then i mentioned a coupon i had which she said she would honor. The food arrives and she doesnt honor the coupon so i call to clarify (its only $3) she says i physically have to have it printed out. I mentioned how my order was incorrect and the $3 could at least be honored or if i can return the food since its not exactly what i ordered she basically said no offered no resolution and told me to basically pay for something i clearly did not want. read more
