This was a great stop and location next to the vertical garden across the café. The owners were super nice and friendly and gave us really unique coffee cocktail drinks with Baileys. It was delicious! We also got some of the bakery items and pan con tomate which was delicious. I really love the atmosphere, the drinks and the free wifi. Will definitely come back before leaving Spain.

Good and fast - ready for our day!

Wonderful little coffee stop. Went there two mornings in a row. Certainly got the motor running. Light breakfast fare was tasty without being over the top. Counter service and wait staff was friendly and efficient. The place was clean and comfy. Enjoyed the corner coffee stop feel. MommaK, Glammom and I enjoyed it!

I stopped in before visiting an exhibit at the nearby Caixa Madrid (with its vertical garden - hence the name of this cafe). I really enjoyed this place. As others have said, the food is not exceptional but it is pleasant. The staff and the atmosphere, however, were fantastic. I got a jamón iberico sandwich and a chocolate filled donut as well as a cappuccino. Due to the proximity to the train station, many other patrons seemed to be travelers grabbing a quick bite before moving on. However, there were plenty of people working and talking with friends as well. Definitely stop in if you are looking for something a little out of the way. I was there around 9:30a and the place was only half full. I am glad I went here as opposed to many of the fuller cafes I walked past.

Im not a coffee girly but here it was good. I got the cafe bombon and a bread with butter and jelly. The service was really nice and the place has great vibes. Definitely will be coming back. It also right across from Retiro!

Cute little spot for breakfast. We went to grab something quick before walking around the city. The latte was super yummy and they had vegetable milk which is impossible to find in the area LOL. I got an Italiano sandwich which was super simple but delicious. The service was great - everyone was very nice :)

This place is perfect with good coffee and great bakery especially croissants. Fresh orange juice is so sweet. Staffs always have smile on their faces and best services. I love this place and will be back.

Vertical Caffè in Madrid

You can't miss the Vertical Caffè towards the south end of the Paseo del Prado. It's right next to a four story tall vertical garden. So as you sip at your coffee, you can try and figure out how they could possible take care of a garden that grows along the side of a building. Great coffee and they have free wifi, but no power outlets that I was able to spot. The "Croissant Mixto" was tasty.

Very cute café next to Caixa Forum. This waitress was also very nice. I recommend this place if you are in the neighborhood.

Given its proximity to a major street and British Museum, I falsely assumed this spot would be touristy. This would usually deter me. However, the bright and easy signage inspired me to try this spot for breakfast and coffee. I'm so pleased I came in! This is not a tourist trap. The prices are fair for breakfast- ranging from 1.70€ to 4.50€- and lunch 3.50€-7.90€. They didn't have churros so I ordered coffee and a croissant. Delicious! The restaurant is akin to dining in a classy garden. The decor from seat covers, foliage on brick wall, wicker fans, and elegant blue light fixtures remind me of eating in a garden. There are two small bathrooms available to customers and free internet. The staff members are friendly and thankfully patient with my attempts at Spanish. If you are nearby, this is a fun spot to stop.

Excellent service! The ladies who work there are extremely friendly and helpful. This place is baby friendly. They have ample seating with spaces to accommodate a small stroller and have a baby changing table in the bathrooms downstairs. Delicious breakfast, pastries and coffee along with a great ambiance. We had cappuccino and a cortadito...both good but the latter was stronger and more to my liking. We had the toast with tomaro, Brie, and ham...yum!

Chamomile team and delicious brownie

I ran into this place as I was walking back from the park to my Airbnb. They have a good menu for a small cafe. Breakfast, salad, sandwich, coffee, tea and dessert options. Oh and beer. Can't be mad at that. My first time I had their chicken Caesar salad. It was very good. Not too big and definitely not too small. I wasn't feeling that great and it was great for a bite to hold me over for a few hours. I also had a chamomile tea. You can't really mess that one up. But, I sat there and spent a couple of hours just relaxing. They had wifi which was a plus. I went back a few days later and had a chicken sandwich. Simple chicken with lettuce, tomato, mayo and mustard. It was good. Again, I hung out for a few hours reading a book and it was super relaxing. I later had a brownie to snack on. They served it warm with whip cream and some chocolate drizzle on top. It was delicious. The staff here is super friendly and great. They bring your food to you and check on you just enough not to bother you. I'll definitely go back before I leave Madrid.

What a pleasant find near my Airbnb. Coffee is fresh and super duper hot just the way I like it. Appears to be a local favorite because I didn't see many tourist or maybe everyone looks like a local to me. Lol (no pun intended) nevertheless I'll visit this spot a few more times during my stay. Oh the deserts and the food looks delicious, I'll do an update if I try anything which more than likely I will.... I'm a foodie...

A pair of classics in their respective cities (2 of 2)…read more - - - - - I'm not surprised there are a lot of reviews. Then, I've had this bookmarked for an eternity based on the reviews of a Yelp friend (acquaintance) from the Yelp Talk chapter who did quite a bit of traveling. I had seen Chocolateria San Gines before but did not go in. I don't know why. This time, I did go in. They have two salons across the street from each other. I prefer the one on the east side of the street, which has the taller ceilings and more glass and mirrors. There may be a line around the side, but it will move quickly. I knew they had chocolate based on their name, but I didn't understand how they factored it into the equation. I sort of assumed that one could get chocolate churros. After all, there are now chocolate cannoli shells and, in some cases, cannoli can also have chocolate filling. The lady at the counter very quickly gave me an education. One gets the standard churros, but they come with a chocolate sauce that you dip them into. This all made for an interesting snack. This is not a place intended for a meal. The churros have a nice bland sort of crunchiness and the chocolate sauce is one heck of a counterpoint. The combination is tasty and unique. I also had a hot drink. Upon asking, they immediately provided me with a small glass of cold water - seen at many adjacent tables - probably to counter the effects of the richness of this snack. Be it at the counter or at the table, the staff was very well mannered and helpful, which was commendable for how busy they were. The interior is very clean and has a lot of history on its walls. The pricing was to my liking, so coming to Chocolateria San Gines is a "no brainer." Everything is there and the intersection of its history and visitors from the world over take this one to 5 stars. A friend of mine who once lived in Madrid laughed upon learning it was on my list. I mentioned I had already been to Mallorquina, which is a few blocks away on Plaza del Sol. The story was that Mallorquina is where Madrid's version of chatty magpies might go to do the dessert and coffee thing with their friends in the afternoon. It closes in the evening. Instead, Chocolateria San Gines is open all the time and might be the last stop of the evening or night before Madrilenos turn in from a night on the town. It is also very easy to reach, only a few blocks from either the Sol or Opera Metro stations, from which you can also take in fascinating nearby Plaza Mayor.

The churros here are a must try in Madrid, Spain…read more The chocolate sauce is divine and great for dipping the churros. There's a dining area to sit inside and outside. The service is relatively quick. The churros are crispy and not oily. If you're in Madrid go here!
