We were in the area and decided to see what kind of Mexican food was in the area. This place Did Not Disappoint! The carne asada tacos were so good and the sope was amazing. A sope is like a tostada but with a short stubby corn cake/tortilla. If you've never tried one, you should! I had mine with their shredded beef and it was delicious. Here is the deal, plain and simple. El Oasis is for those that love whole-in-the-wall venues. It is a taco truck parked in an open parking lot. You order your food at the window or by calling the guy's cell phone for a take out order. You pay a ridiculously affordable price for your meal. Then, you proceed to either: 1) eat in the comforts of your own home, 2) eat in your car, or 3) eat on the stoop of the dilapidated house behind El Oasis. We had a good 3 years together and you never failed me- not even once! You were there in the hot summers (for those lovely two-weeks in Michigan) and you stood strong during the winter months (pretty much the remainder of the year, minus the two warm weeks). I love you because your ingredients are simple yet so delicious. I have yet to find another taco truck to defeat you, even after my taco affairs in San Diego, Orlando and Tampa. I completely agree with Linda Q. You won't find much of a Mexican cuisine or Latin food movement going on in Lansing. BUT: Whenever I craved even the smallest morsel of home, I would be first in line at El Oasis. No, I am not Mexican. I am Colombian & Ecuadorian. It's just that El Oasis always had a taste of something familiar to me. It was Mexican food that was made simply and authentically, not over seasoned or Americanized. Don't get me wrong- I like Chipotle... but not for its authenticity in the way that I love El Oasis. My "go-to" dish was the 3-taco dinner with rice and beans. You can choose any meat filling from: steak, chicken, ground beef, lengua (cow tongue), pork, carnitas and a few others. Helpful servings of diced onion and cilantro top each taco with a lime wedge on the side for a spritz of citrus. The tostadas are another good option: a fried tortilla topped with a refried bean spread, meat, cheese and lettuce. There are other meal options to choose from but honestly, I couldn't get enough of the 3-taco special. Variety and goodness, all in one, with a bottle of pineapple Jarritos Mexican soda on the side, on the stoop of the dilapidated house in the cold Michigan air. I love it. read more

Let's be serious, mid Michigan is not renowned for its Mexican cuisine. But el oasis (aka taco truck) will make you spin like a dreidel thinking you're in the wrong state. You order at the window and pay once your food is ready. And by pay, I mean scrounge up the change in your cup holder because that's all you'll need to eat here. I always order the tostadas without meat ($2/each; see, cup holder change)!! Fried corn tortilla layered with refried beans, shredded lettuce, topped with avocado and tomatoes, and drizzled with crema and sour cream. It's so simple, but tastes amazing!! You can order these with meat on top too, just for $1 more. Speaking of meat, there is an extensive list of meat options!! Carnitas (pork), asada (steak), chorizo (spicy sausage), lingua (beef tongue), barbacoa (beef cheek), pollo (chicken). Go to town! Ok, now I have to dedicate a paragraph to sauce picking, because the outcome of your choices will affect your happiness and your health. When you pay for your food, you will be prompted to choose side sauces. The one to pick is the creamy green one! It will make you and your ulcer sweat! It's pretty much just blended hot peppers. I think they enhance the flavor with a sprinkle of crack cocaine because it is highly addictive! Don't worry, the pain is temporary and so worth it. There is also a "mild" green sauce. Don't do it. Their tacos are as delicious as ever. But I think they had sautéed onions this time instead of diced raw onions, which is fine by me. This time I got steak and al pastor. I think I'm going to stick with al pastor from now on. It's just more flavorful. And the spicy green sauce is so good!!! I hope they never change it. If you're driving along and you see El Oasis, do not keep going, slam on the brakes, pull up and make sure you order a burrito. I have never had a burrito as good as one from here. When I worked in Lansing 2008-2013 I lunched at El Oasis fairly often. It wasn't long before I got hooked on the Torta with pastor with a dangerous looking hot sauce (which I liked), and a great bun. I went back a couple of Saturdays ago. Both the meat and the sauce have changed.... they're even better...(the sauce doesn't look toxic anymore).
