Again, just milk with a slight hint of the syrup. I always like to try seasonal drinks but now that I'm old, I think I'm just gonna get regular coffee in the future. I couldn't tell you what the coffee tasted like at all. Service was fine, I read a lot of negative reviews but my barista was very nice and friendly. It definitely looked like a great place to relax at, there were quite a few tables and they were all filled. We did not get any of the baked goods; it all looked appetizing though. Good strong coffee, had the brown sugar cardamom latte with oatmilk. Not too sweet which was perfect. Doughnuts: delicious! 5 stars for having gluten-free options - - and not just a token 1 item :-) Alternative milks: they have oat and almond milk. This coffee shop had such a wide variety of drink and food options we had to try it during our stay. There are two different locations. We ended up at the one that didn't serve breakfast sandwiches but they did look amazing on the online menu. The cinnamon and honey latte and the iced NOLA were worth a try. We weren't able to get our sandwiches but we did end up with a few cinnamon rolls, and a blueberry and a lemon lavender donut. They did not disappoint. We drove by Strange Matter Coffee and my neck immediately turned to take a look. Fortunately, our stop was close by, so my cousin and I walked over 20 minutes before closing this past Sunday for some evening coffee. ICED CINNAMON HONEY LATTE (16 OZ) - 5.25 They don't charge for milk substitutions here which is awesome!! The cinnamon and honey were strong, but I found this to be a little too sweet for me after halfway through. I really liked that I could taste the coffee in the specialty latte, which I feel like is rare. The espresso is made using their Starship Espresso blend, I believe. I also got a bag of their Costa Rica single origin beans (you get a free basic drink here if you buy a bag) which smells really good. I brewed it as a Chemex and thought it was OK and a coffee I'd drink for any other normal day. Overall, Strange Matter Coffee was a nice find while I was in the Lansing area! I'd recommend it if you are looking for a variety of specialty lattes or any pour overs/black coffee drinks. Good study space, too. read more

Amazing!!! The doughnuts where excellent. I had the cookie butter, blueberry cheesecake and the black coco raspberry. All of them were filled with delicious filling. Strange Matter! Where to begin?! What a great coffee-treasure! For starters, Google listed them as 'CLOSED' when they had their bright 'OPEN' sign lit up on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon! Despite the mix-up, this was the greatest little find! We ordered two iced drinks and one cute Gay Frog donut! The LGBTQIA-friendly atmosphere made an instant impression. Almost all the donuts were pride themed, and for that, I say H*ll yeah! I had an iced NOLA, which had hints of chicory, sweetened to perfection! My partner ordered an iced Chai; I do not even enjoy Chai, and this one was delicious!!!! Added perk?! The lovely being behind the counter was so friendly and knew exactly what they were offering! We ended up at Strange Matter Coffee again recently while in town for a family gathering. It was a sunny, warmer day in January so I think lots of people were out - we originally tried to go to Foster Coffee Co in downtown EL but it was super busy - and Strange Matter was just as busy! Luckily we were able to grab a table but the whole place was pretty full. The flow seemed a little different than the last time we visited - you order on the left hand of the bar and pick up towards the center of the bar. We got a sweet potato marshmallow latte with oat milk, an espresso cola, a vegan cranberry crunch donut, and a couple of stickers. We dug into the donut right away when we sat down to wait for our drinks. It was okay - it wasn't as light and fluffy as I would've preferred for a yeast donut, but maybe that's just how vegan donuts are. The glaze was sweet and tasty. Now for my main complaint about this spot (and other coffee shops that do this) - they just yell out the name of the drink as they're prepared and set them on the counter for people to figure out themselves. I really don't like when places do this, as it can be confusing and awkward if you order the same thing as someone else waiting. Case in point, I went to grab my drink but someone was already picking it up off the counter. Luckily the person they were with said, "I don't think that's ours," because they didn't order theirs with oat milk. Had they taken and drank it, I'm not sure what I would've done because it was super busy in there and I don't think I'd want to get back in line and ask for my drink to be remade. Plus, if you miss them yelling your drink out, it might sit there getting cold (which I did see happening as well). I wish coffee shops would stop doing this - it's a huge pet peeve of mine. It would only take literally 3 seconds more to ask someone's name and write it on the cup. Anyway, besides all that, the latte was okay and Nate really enjoyed the espresso soda, which is just espresso mixed with Coke. It's a unique and interesting drink that we've tried elsewhere. There's a decent amount of free parking in the lot behind the building, but we did have to walk around to the front entrance. The space is not huge, so it might be tough to find a seat during busy times. read more

I went into the shop bit it is tiny and was so packed that I wasn't able to get to the counter and served in a timely manner. I was able to sample both the donuts and coffee at a later time as a take out order. The donuts were cakey, heavy, and nothing special. The coffee wasn't my favorite either. Better than one of the big chain places, but not extremely so. I don't understand the hype about the products, as afar I sampled wasn't outstanding. Excellent coffee and donuts! I ordered the cinnamon honey latte based on all the stellar reviews, and it did not disappoint! So creamy and I could totally taste the honey. After a hectic morning, I needed that caffeinated goodness and it was delicious. I also ordered the lemon lavender donut which was a nice blend of lavender-y and lemon-y - I didn't find the lavender overpowering (which happens with baked goods and lavender) and the lemon was a nice zing. The dough on the donut was spongy and very soft - I ate the entire thing, which surprised me because I was already full from breakfast. Lol! My daughter had the vanilla sprinkled donut and she said it was very yummy. The layout of the cafe is pretty small, but very cozy and welcoming. I loved the inclusive vibe and the couches were perfect for lounging. We were just visiting Lansing for the week, but I'd totally return for coffee and donuts. read more

Love this place, what it does for the community and the options. However, there treatment of the customer in front of me was abhorrent. This person simply had a few clarifying questions about the menu and then what she was being asked to round up from on the machine (She ended up donating by the way) and the barista behind the register acted like every question was inconvenient. When you have someone from an older generation especially during this time willing to frequent your business and support trans youth you'd think you would welcome them in and treat them with the respect and dignity they deserve as well. I'm disappointed in the workers for acting like their personal conversation was coming at a cost when there were customers just trying to order. I stop by here often as I enjoy the study ambiance (it can get loud, crowded, and the tables aren't that spacious). Being from Grand Rapids, their coffee is mediocre. For Lansing standards, this is probably the best coffee shop in town. NOLA iced coffee: Tastes like caramel milk. Very sweet with little coffee taste. If you aren't a big fan of black coffee or the taste of coffee in general, you will like this. Honey cinnamon latte: Very burnt. Not too sweet or too milky, but definitely burnt. Drip coffee: I would prefer this to the NOLA and honey cinnamon latte. Their doughnuts on the other hand are worth noting. They are really freaking good. I like a more chewy doughnut with a bite, so I like their doughnuts a lot. My sister thought the dough was too hard and not soft enough. Elsa's Delight (sugar cookie flavor) - seasonal: This was great. The glittery frosting gave you permanent lip gloss, though. 4/5 Cinnamon sugar: I usually prefer frosting, but this one was great. (Kind of stale, though.) 4/5 Vegan cookie butter: Probably my favorite. Not to sweet. (Also a bit stale). 5/5 Vegan peanut butter chocolate: This donut was not stale and was softer. Maybe it was because I got order this on a different day early in the morning. But this was waaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy too sweet. We made a stop here on my last morning in East Lansing because coffee and donuts were required ahead of the drive. The space is contemporary and cozy - lots of natural light, huge community tables with plenty of seating, and a soft seating option in the middle of the shop. The donut options were incredible with a great variety of flavors. I was impressed by the gluten-free and vegan options, especially when my friend told me that SM makes all of the donuts in-house. I opted for a cake donut with blueberry glaze accompanied by a honey cinnamon latte. The donut was really good. I wish the blueberry flavor was more pronounced but I also appreciate that it wasn't artificial. The latte was perfect - a nice foamy head on a sweet latte with just the right balance of honey and cinnamon. It tasted like comfort in a mug. I highly recommend this place. I would have loved to camp out for awhile and read or write - the energy was positive and the crowd was quietly buzzing on caffeine and sugar. read more
