We Love Mexican food. So... We went to the new place on Michigan Avenue. It looks great ... but REALLY - who wants to eat runny fried beans? Not me... the Fajitas were scrimpy & mostly Veggies. We go to ACAPULCO & always get really great food & their Fajitas are full of whatever meat you choose garnished with grilled veggies - not filled either them ... I do think that maybe the Pablo Management needs to visit them or eat there & view their Menu & taste their food. This is a bit off the beaten path for people visiting Lansing. The restaurant is small but staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Food is very authentic. We ordered the Chilaquiles Verde, Chile Rellenos, Cheese Quesadillas with side of guacamole, and American Tacos. For drinks we had the Limonada. The result: 1) Chilaquiles-we're awesome. The Verde sauce with the beans really made the dish. 2) Chile Rellenos - was very good. It was surprising that there were carrots in the stuffing with the meat. The combination was good. 3) Quesadilla- can't go wrong but the side of guacamole was fresh and very tasty. 4) American tacos - is at the top of my child's list of tacos from restaurants and my child is very picky. 5) Limonada - home made fresh lime juice blended with ice drink; very refreshing and one of the best I have had. Lansing actually has a decent food scene here, with many options to choose from. I was famished and needed something to eat, and after scouring restaurants in the area, this place came up. I liked that they served breakfast, lunch AND dinner, so off I went! Parking here's decent, but if you want to park in the public lots to do stuff and walk around the area, you have to download some app to pay. Being that I was irrationally hungry, I didn't feel like downloading anything, and I actually got a better parking spot parking on the street and right in front of Pablo's. Walking in, the place isn't huge, but there's enough room for up to a party of 4 to dine in. I grabbed a booth and reviewed the menu to see what offerings they had. They did start me off with chips and salsa, and the chips were great. Salsa was good, but could have used a little more pep to it. I went with the Huervos Mexicana, which was absolutely fabulous. It's basically scrambled eggs with tons of good stuff in it, rice and refried beans. My only concern was I told my waitress to go easy on the Jalapenos, but I think she must have heard "no jalapenos" because I didn't notice any in my dish when she brought it out. Food was excellent, and the refried beans were DELICIOUS. (some places have very bland refried beans. I don't know why this is a thing for me. Weird.) Prices here are spot on, and the whole thing cost me $10 plus tip. Server was fabulous and she was really super nice. Even for a random weekday morning, the place seems to be a busy spot, which is a good sign. For a solid quick meal, check this place out. Legit Mexican food for an excellent price. Park two blocks down in the big public lot for Oldtown, it's about $0.85 an hour weekdays, free other times. This is a smaller place, an old building facing the street, and I was told by a hotel manager it was the oldest Mexican restaurant in Lansing plus it's convenient on an Oldtown stroll. The 2 p.m. chicken fajitas for $17.99 are about $13.99 elsewhere. The salsa is watery, right or wrong, therefore I ate little of it. The chips and food are awesome, top tier, which is not always the case for $13.99. It is Oldtown but surely that building was paid off long ago. read more

In my travels across the Midwest for work, I have encountered Mexican food that has ranged from really bad to just average. To say I was pleasantly shocked tonight with my visit to Pablo's is an understatement. First, the service was pretty incredible. Everyone was so friendly and made us feel very welcome. We were also greeted with chips and salsa, which is always a lovely start. They were warm and the salsa was spot on. Upon looking over the menu, I was kind of shocked with how reasonably priced everything was. And because everything was on the cheaper side and items could be ordered a la cart, I obviously indulged more than I should have. I tried the gorditos with ground beef (clearly homemade and incredible)- they were everything I hoped they would be. These come 3/$9- I did have to add the rice and beans, but the fee was minimal. I also added a Chile relleno (I couldn't pass on this for $3). This was a delight. The sauce on top was filled with warm spices and was unique. Finally, I added a mini carnitas burrito ($5.50). It certainly wasn't mini at all. I now have leftovers for days and a strong urge to return again; next time, I will definitely be trying the posole (one of my favorites dishes on this planet) or maybe a tamale or perhaps a torta. There's really not a lot of Mexican spots here in Lansing to choose from. My fiance and I were very skeptical to try all of them now because our past two experiences were not that great. We love some good Mexican food, especially being from the SoCal and TX area. I think we were spoiled living there. Ever since we moved here in Lansing, we've been having Mexican food withdrawals. He loves his fajitas and menudo, while I usually go for tacos and enchiladas. We crave soups every now and then too. It's honestly really hard to find pozole, menudo and lengua around the area. And I'm so glad we found a place that serves them. Here's what we ordered: * Menudo (4/5 - good texture and taste but the flavors are not bold enough. Generous amount of tripe and hominy, just a little bland.) * Horchata (3.5/5 - good but overwhelmingly sweet) * Lengua Tacos (4/5 - lengua is very tender but overall, nothing special.) * Lengua Gorditas (3.7/5 - again, lengua is very tender. Crunchy on the outside, but very mushy on the inside. Generous serving of 3 + beans and rice. Rice is mediocre, though. Overall taste is a little bland.) * Chips and Salsa (4/5 - it has a nice spicy kick to it.) You may ask, why did I give 4 stars when my rating on the food didn't match? It is the closest comparison from home out of all the Mexican food we've tried in the area. Plus the fact that they have menudo, posole, lengua, and aguas frescas is already a win for me. The menu is large and offers some more traditional Mexican fare as well as some Mexican American options. I ordered the sopes with pernil which were super tasty. It was clear the sopes were handmade and they were the perfect width. The pernil was very flavorful. Also tried some of the pozole, which was perfect on a cold night. The meat was so tender. Tried a bite of my brother's Gordita and it was good as well (with asada). I didn't love the tamales here. The masa was a bit dry and the flavor was not very strong. Would skip those next time but would come back for the sopes for sure. The salsa they brought to the table was tasty but very mild. If you want something with a kick you'll have to ask for it.
