The food is authentic Tex-Mex and very delicious. The tortillas hand tossed, soft, and hot. The servers are good but they had good days and bad like most humans. The atmosphere is like dining in Mexico and they actually play real Mexican music which adds to the ambience. We came here this morning and ordered a couple bowls of Menudo. Their Menudo comes with pig foot in it and it comes with all the sides like jalapeños, cilantro, onion, and the best buttery homemade flour tortillas. The waitresses are very nice and the restaurant is clean and what I like is its nice and quiet inside and not overly crowded if you're in the Austin Highway and Eisenhower area definitely stop by and check this place out. Fair selection, fair food. I chose to meet a long lost buddy of mine at El Molcajete. The restaurant is clean and the staff gets its done. If you want it, they get it to you. Chips and salsa, were standard - I noticed that the salsa was not runny. I ordered the enchiladas verdes and a chalupa (on the side). It was good. Ordered breakfast. It's hard to mess up breakfast. While the meal was good, the tortillas were dry and slightly hard. They were fresh, but like it had too much lard (or what ever they use. I would still have been okay with the meal, but when I went to pay the total seemed a tad high. I paid and requested a receipt. Upon giving me the receipt, the cashier made a dash to the kitchen. Not a big deal, but upon inspection I had an extra item added to my ticket. I stood and waited and waited and even asked a waitress if she could get the cashier. She never showed up. I left and decided to report this on Yelp! Note that the receipt shows 1 meal $6.99, open food $1.00, open food $2.00 drink $2.99 (way expensive). The only extra was a sweetbread for $1.00. I have been trying to go here for years. Really. Something always came up preventing it happening. Well, I finally got to go for a late lunch. I had gone to three other establishments before going here. They are open until 2200. So, for a late eater like myself, it's perfect. I was indecisive when I went, so I asked the waitress what her favorite meal was, & told her I can't eat much. She recommended the cheese enchilada plate, either the regular or the child's plate. I went with the regular, knowing I'd only eat the enchiladas. It comes with a crispy beef taco, three enchilads, a little lettuce & tomato slice, beans & rice, with tortillas. I ate the little salad & enchiladas. That filled me up. I made bean tacos with the tortillas to take home. Now, the tortillas were not really that great. As a San Antonioan, I take pride in the tortillas in our town. These were not that good. They were actually hard. Still for take home bean tacos, they're meh. To drink I got horchatta. I'm sure like every other place around me, it's from a mix as it tasted just like others. You know when it's made fresh & when it's a mix. The plate is huge. It is truly two meals. If you eat this entire plate, it is easily over 2000 calories. No! That is too much food, unless you're running ‍ ‍ every single day. But, I will be back. The staff is very sweet, friendly & helpful with selections. I normally ask the staff for recommendations, unless I have a meal in mind. I have checked in twice, but the 1st one was during the peak of COVID & they weren't open. Discovered after I checked in. So, the deduction of one star was due to the tortillas. The lemonade is 5 stars in itself lol ( I recommend ) My girlfriend ordered the beef fajita tacos and may I say these were the most tender and flavorful quesadillas I've had in a good while! I ordered the caldo de Rez (beef soup) and I had no fat in my caldo, the meat was soft yet tender and juicy to every bite; the rice was delicious as well and did I mention the lemonade ? My pops got the order of asada mini tacos and they looked delicious, he didn't offer any and stayed quiet the whole time. So I know the food was good because he would of said something at least once lol. My mom ordered the grilled fish, and gave me a piece of her order and the fish surpassed my expectations. I found this place while searching for something nearby. My son was hungry and works nearby. Placed a phone order for 6 tacos - 1 chorizo egg, 1 potato egg, 2 potato bacon egg, 2 bacon egg cheese....all for $13.71 anyplace else I've placed a similar order would be at least $10 more. The waiter (Quique) was rude to my wife, telling her the chicken street tacos were a children's order, implying my wife was a child. It was a disappointment overall for over $54 investment. My spouse and I visited last night for dinner and really enjoyed our meals. The restaurant is quaint and clean and the staff is kind. The menu has lots to choose from too. I had the Plato Barbacoa and he had the Tacos Dorados. The barbacoa was excellent! Packed with flavor and a good sized portion of meat. Looved the cactus and the tortillas were delicious. Spouse chose to get two chicken tacos and one beef. All were cooked to perfection. The rice and beans served with both dishes were very flavorful too. I bought some marranitos that were up at the front but upon getting home and sitting down to enjoy them I realized that the packed by date on them was almost a month ago. I took a few bites but they were past their prime so I tossed them. As a former baker I can say with certainty that the way they were packaged would only give them a true shelf life of no more than 7 days. But no matter because all in all we were very satisfied not only with the food but the staff and cleanliness of the restaurant and will definitely be coming back to try different dishes and the breakfast! read more

I'm going to be upfront - my wife and I eat here because we find this place hilarious. The food is good and inexpensive, but the patrons are a great value in entertainment. The crowd is a surreal group of characters most nights. On some nights, folks will do karaoke at their table or even wandering among the other diners. I'm not saying this is a quality floor show, just some hyperreality for your dinner. Service can be slow in the evenings. This is best fixed by speaking some polite Spanish or seating yourself where you will be seen. If you sit off by yourself, you'll be forgotten at some point. The food is good and huge portions. Skip the queso but enjoy the salsas. This is just a solid neighborhood Mexican place in a kinda skeevy neighborhood. But it's cheap and good. The drinks aren't watered down. Food comes fast. Just know that this place is run more like somebody's living room than a restaurant and don't be afraid to get up and ask for what you want. read more

The people are friendly, courteous, and efficient. They kept my coffee full and checked on me exactly the right amount. The Plata Caliente was solid dependable food. The vegetables were fresh and the shrimp, chicken, and beef had the right texture. These folks know how to time the cooking of disparate proteins. The quest was very meh; soupy and flavorless. The salsa was much better with a rich flavor and a bit of heat. The salsas they brought with the plate were a tangy tomatillo sauce and a fiery jalapeño sauce that absolutely made my day. But it think it goes one step above. The seasonings were Mexican on point. I had the Mexican plate. When the waitress says "Hot Plate", you better believe it. Food comes out of the kitchen piping hot. The enchiladas were very good. Seasoned very good. The meat in the crispy beef taco was somewhat over-seasoned. Definitely one of the better taquerias in the area. Good salsas, both red and green, and delicious, tender pork chops. The carne guisada is thick and very meaty, and the portions are generous. They have daily lunch specials for under $7 that come with tea. The waitresses are very friendly, and the service is very fast, especially if you go in for take out. Perfect place for a work lunch, whether grabbing a bite in or taking out. The only negative is that their tortillas are a bit thin, and they may be heavy on the salt for certain dishes. The food was AMAZING!!! However the wait staff was AWFUL. It was like once we placed our orders we did not exsist. I got NO refills on my tea the whole hour and a half we were there and even had to ask for my kids to get refills as we were leaving (they didn't get any the whole time we were there also) and it was not busy. It also took us several attempts to get her attention for the check. Other tables were also getting upset at the negligence of the staff. Bad service and the food is subpar; first and only time at El Molcajete. Our waitress took our drink and food order and didn't bother to come back. I was so put off when I went to the women's restroom and found some nasty looking stuff on floor-- not sure if it was vomit or salsa but it had a "wet floor" sign next to it--- it really made feel sick to my stomach to think they were too lazy to clean that up.
