We stumbled across this little hole in the wall. It honestly looked very sketchy but we were homesick and wanted Mexican food. Shrimp cocktail was all ketchup, very little avocado and jalapeño. Server did not get refills or check on us. Also ordered egg chorizo bean burrito to go. Received chorizo and potato and it had eggs shells in it. Not sure what is going on here, but $70 for whole ticket for 3 people (2 orders of menudo as well). I grew up in the area and have always loved Mexican food. I've tried every place in the Panhandle, and I always looked forward to eating here. After leaving for the military and spending time on both the East and West Coast, I can honestly say this is the best Mexican restaurant I've ever been to. (A couple who was seated at the same time as we were, received their meal 10 minutes before us.) The meals were very small. - The beans were dry around the edges, the taco shell was so dry that it fell apart as I tried to eat it, and there was hardly any chicken on it. The guacamole was really good & their red salsa was good. The lettuce & tomatoes were fresh. The taco shells and the rice were good, but the chicken had no flavor and the beef had no flavor or consistency of meat. It was more like a pate' and not appetizing at all. Made me glad there wasn't much of it in the taco. The cook must be on a low salt diet because there was very little of it in the food. I spilled my drink, the waitress brought us a towel, but no new napkins and didn't offer to refill my drink. My husband said he would have given it 3 1/2 stars if they would have had alcohol. I'm from Denver and am a little picky about green chili but they make an interesting red pork chili here and tastes amazing in their breakfast burritos. The bacon that they use isn't chewy and has a sturdy texture to it. The menudo was pretty good too. read more

Been to this restaurant about a dozen times over the years. Great small little gem on East Overland. Food is authentic Mexican and care is put into each dish prepared. I really like the breakfast burrito options and how you can customize your own. Definitely worth a try if you want some great food. Seating is limited as the restaurant is small. Parking is much the same. Prices are average to slightly high but the quality is worth it. Also this place is cash only. read more

This is a small family owned restaurant with well loved family recipes. The staff is local and so are the owners. They work hard to put love into every dish and make sure you leave full and happy. I've never had a bad experience and the food is fairly priced and in my opinion maybe a little under priced for the portions you get, we always get the tacos asada and the menudo!! Based on another review, I tried the the 3 enchilada plate with beef and corn tortillas. (They give you the option of flour, but in my opinion, real enchiladas aren't made with flour.) I really liked the enchiladas. They're cooked in sauce, but they aren't served swimming in sauce like at most Mexican restaurants; they're just topped with lettuce, tomato and grated jack cheese. I would have liked a little sauce on them, but they gave me a bowl of red salsa that did the trick. The rice and beans were tasty too. Service was good and I'd definitely eat here again. Just a reminder- they don't take credit cards, so be sure to bring cash. read more

I normally try not to leave bad reviews, preferring to believe that a bad experience I have is just a once-in-a-blue-moon kinda thing. But, the combination of unbelievably bad customer service, unbelievably bad food, and a very grimy & dirty restaurant is pretty good motivation. Customer service- We got takeout, due to having dogs in our car on a 90° day while traveling through. No plasticware was included, no napkins. Had to go back, and turns out they don't have plastic knives. Only forks and spoons.. Upon trying to cut into my enchiladas with a fork, it snapped, throwing my food all over the car (another motivation for this negative review.) Food- I ordered their 3 smothered enchiladas, with chicken and beef. This restaurant doesn't deserve 4th place for all food in Scott's Bluff. The rice is tasteless, the refried beans are tasteless, the meat is super low quality (random black streaks throughout their chicken, dry, no flavor), and their Pepsi had no carbonation. I just don't understand how it's possible to get beef to taste literally like nothing, without first washing it in soap. Beef looked kinda grey, so hopefully we don't get sick with the few bites we took. Chips and salsa were average at best. Cleanliness- Other reviewers mentioned they don't clean their menus between customers, and it was very grimy inside. You could tell nothing is cleaned well, which makes one wonder about the condition of their soda machine, or the kitchen in back. It all combined into a pretty terrible experience for us, and a huge waste of money and time. I would avoid this place at all costs. read more

What a surprising find in Scottsbluff. This town has numerous Mexican restaurants to choose from. On our travels from Kansas to Montana we have eaten at most of them at one time or another. This place is a small family run business. The corn tortillas seemed home made. The chorizo con huevos (breakfast anytime) was top notch. I had the daily special -- two pork chili tostadas. It tasted just like my grandma used to make. The special also can with fideo (as well as rice and beans). Most places don't serve this, and again like grandma used to make. We discovered El Molcajete while in Scottsbluff overnight on a road trip searching for "best Mexican restaurants." If you want authentic Mexican food, this is it! This tiny, homey restaurant serves what they call "comida casera" in Mexico, home-cooked food. It's rare to find homemade tortillas, which were wonderful! The beans are delicious, as is the "smothered" option, which is tender pork chunks in a rich, mouth-watering red chile sauce. My taco barbacoa was simple and savory-- and again, the home made tortilla made everything perfect. Freshly made guacamole was a perfect accompaniment to the slow-cooked beef. We were thrilled to find Mexican food that wasn't drowning in melted cheese and sour cream. Having spent a lot of time traveling through different parts of Mexico and learning that authentic cuisine isn't represented often in North American restaurants, coming across El Molcajete was a happy surprise. read more

I will admit the outside does not reflect the inside . I started with a chili relleno which was very good. The entree came two smothered corn enchiladas they ok but not anything special. We were looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant and this was it! We all loved the food and the waitress was so nice and attentive, even though she was the only waitress for the whole place! It totally has that dive look to it, but it is amazing and we highly recommend. I had the 2 chimichangas (not for sure how you spell it!) that was filled with pork type chili. Now I totally prefer ground beef, but these were the bomb! It came 2 sides, beans, rice or fideo. Had beans and fideo (first time) and we all loved fideo (noodle soup). They even gave us the recipe. Don't let the exterior fool you, this place serves up some legit food. You have to pay for chips but it was only a couple bucks and the rest of the menu is very affordable so I didn't mind "splurging" on chips. I got a couple tacos (fried flour not corn) and a tamale, they were both excellent and the pork tamale was out of this world with just the right amount of heat.
