Loved it! It's probably the only Mexican restaurant in key west you can get molé sauce!! We got a sopé for appetizer which was small but delicious. My entree was chicken enchiladas with mole sauce , loved it! The refried beans were a little bland, but otherwise the food was great. Also the prices are great! BYOB , I didn't realize this and which I brought a bottle of wine or some mixed margaritas. I'll be back and will remember this for next time! Very cute decorations inside, there's tables or booths. Excellent. The opening salsa was fresh and tasty. Not overly spicy but bursting with flavor. The chicken mole was the the thing of the day - everyone seemed to be ordering it, so I went with the flow. The flavor was excellent and the chicken very, very tender. I also ordered the Chile Releno because that's what I do. I went with only cheese. They do have a steak and cheese option. It was extra large and packed. The egg batter was thick. Lots of city workers and locals chilling out. All were very happy. The music plays and laughter filled the air. The staff is excellent, a little erratic on speaking English or not. The server was very attentive. I stumbled into El Molcajete on the walk back from fishing all morning. I was unable to finish it all and will have leftovers later. My new favorite Mexican Restaurant! Ordered the chicken flautas and they were the best I've had in years. Rice and beans were flavorful and tasted great. Chips and salsa were on point. Unfortunately, service was not so great. We seemed to be forgotten after our plates were brought out. Never got offered water refills, we had to stop another server for more chips and other things we needed through out the visit which ruined the vibe. Parking was another issue. There's not any actual parking spots other than the side of the building. read more

Asked the waitress for steak tacos with just cheese no onion, she rudely acts like she can't understand English, and my husband translated in Spanish not sure what her issue was as she clearly didn't understand in either language as she brought it out wrong 2x...she brings my husband and sons their food but takes mine back, she comes back with my food with onions and no cheese - there was cilantro but I can handle that but I can't stand the onions...we made a point to ask her without so if they couldn't accommodate they should have said something... we told her the issue she brings it back a second time to the cooks and brings it back the same except with added onion- the big round onions weren't there before.... Clearly intentional and rude...Cheese on tostada should have been melted ...Very disrespectful, said that they only make the meat with onion in it, except for my son had the same kind of meat on his tostada and they did it without onion for him so I'm not quite sure why they did that to mine.. don't waste your money here poor quality service and food... read more

The food was authentic and excellent. My wife had the Soppe and the tostada, which were both very tasty. I had the chicken and mole which was authentic. Reminded me of Home cooking. The portions were excellent and we are gonna be back tomorrow morning for Sunday morning breakfast looking forward to the breakfast menu. read more

We were recommended to eat at this Authentic Mexican restaurant. We were greeted as we entered the door with a great smile. We then were told to sit were we desired. The waitress Amanda was excellent in quickly providing chips and salsa. The drinks were limited to soft drinks as they shared they were awaiting their license to distribute beer and wine. The food did not take long and was prepared and served as ordered. The taste was authentic Mexican and the Ambience was very family oriented. The manager was very cordial and professional. I highly recommend this restaurant for a great family or quiet meal. read more

The El Molcajete Mexican Restaurant on 1500 Bertha Street in Key West, Florida was recently opened in September of 2024. My friends and I decided to try out this new restaurant and let's just say it needs some work. Newly opened, this Mexican restaurant has some main issues, such as the exterior, location, atmosphere, food, and price. The restaurant is located in midtown Key West which isn't a bad thing by itself, but the building is right off of a busy street, has undesignated parking, and lies next to run-down buildings nearby. It just didn't give a good first impression right off the drive and arrive at the restaurant. Then the building itself is quite unflattering. The exterior walls are cinder blocks with old, off-white paint over them. The door and window frame were outdated and in a similar white color. The roofing is red, white, and green like the Mexico Flag, but that outside overall conveyed a jail-converted-to-restaurant vibe. There also was a lack of plants and trees around the store. Come to think of it, I don't believe there was a single piece of landscaping to improve the restaurants curb-appeal and hide the jail-like appearance of the building. We walked inside and the restaurant felt uncomfortable. To me, first impressions matter, and this has continued to disappoint me. We sat in a booth, and I don't think that they were even building into the floor; The booth sort of just sat on the floor like it was just moved in and out against the wall. The low ceiling had foam tiles, and it reminded me of an old airport or school. Along with this, there didn't appear to be any other people eating inside, and there were a lot of seats, so this made me feel uncomfortable as well. Perhaps it was the time that we went which was around 2pm for lunch. The server was nice and attentive at least, but it still felt empty and eerie inside. The food was not horrible to me. I had the Chicken Fajita, and it was well cooked. However, the chicken didn't have a lot of flavor and needed more spice or seasoning during the cooking process. My friend ordered the Nacho Supreme appetizer, and we would NOT recommend it. The cheese was cold and didn't taste fresh. It didn't look fresh either, resembling the fake cheese used for nachos at movie theaters. Along with this, the prices were in a $15-20 range for a meal, including the drink and tip. The price could have been worse, but I didn't feel like it was worth the overall experience. Another aspect I noticed was that there were no alcoholic beverages on the menu, so I wouldn't recommend this for parents wanting to enjoy a drink either. The El Molcajete Mexican Restaurant's poor exterior, average food, uncomfortable atmosphere, higher prices, bad location, and other aspects contributed to the negative experience which I had. Maybe it was a bad day or time to come, but I wouldn't recommend this Mexican restaurant to people coming or living in Key West because there are a lot of other food options. read more
