When you can get really full with a meal for $4, it's really hard to go wrong! Like many others, a good part of the reason to come here is for a pupusa. At just over $2 each, it's a steal. I can usually eat about 2. Or 1 and something else. Definitely put the cabbage and red sauce on top. It adds the right amount of crunch and acid. I've only tried one of two other things on the menu and I would say the Mexican food side of things is better than average but not blow you away. But the price is very affordable. Yes, this one gets 5 stars simply because when it comes to Pupusas, there is no competition for El Mexsal anywhere around, in my opinion. I've even had co workers from Salt Lake and even more North who have told me that El Mexsal is the place to go for Pupusas. And at about $2-$3 dollars each?! Just two of them fill me up pretty easily. I usually go with one cheese and one revuelta and I refuse to change that because it's kept me so happy for so long. Do keep in mind that it's usually pretty busy and usually pretty slow to get your food. I try to now go in less busy times to avoid this. Overall El Mexsal is one to write home about for me, and when we have friends come into town, this is one place we make sure to take them to. read more

I love this places pupusas and the enchiladas. It usually takes some waiting for their food and the services has always been just OK. Today was somewhat of a busy day for them. I decided to try crab and shrimp enchilada instead. After waited for my food for over half an hour without the server checking on me, then I started to see the oders came out for the people came after me, I checked with the server and found out that they never started my order. I heard some giggles from the kitchen after the server brought it to their attention (yes I set straight facing their kitchen), my food came out within 3 minutes, and it was an enchilada with lukewarm outside and refrigerator cold crab and shrimp in the middle. By then I have been there for 40 minutes. The food got returned and after almost 10 minutes, the first plate that came up still wasn't mine. Needless to say, after total of 50 minutes of waiting, I left with only eaten a basket of chips and some salsa. read more

Went to Provo for a tour at Taste Chocolate. Had searched for a Salvadorian restaurant near the event. Found two but El Mexsal closed later which gave us time to take in another site outside of Provo before dinner. Called to make reservations a half hour before arrival and they were able to accommodate a party of fifteen on short notice. The place was busy but we were seated as soon as we arrived. The service was great with the waiter getting our multiple check orders correct and the staff being very attentive in bringing out our food quickly and keeping the chips and salsa coming along with the refills. There were other large groups there but I had no problem talking and hearing the family members near me. The food was great. I ordered three pupusas thinking they might be small due to the price for each but I ended up taking one back to the hotel. They were delicious and filled to the edges with pork and cheese. We first tried El Mexsal because it was close to our new home and open on Sundays. Why do we keep coming back so often? Because the food satisfies on so many levels. That first day, I was feeling adventurous, so I tried the pupusas, one pork and one bean, hold the cheese. They were so good, I couldn't make myself try anything else for many visits. Even with my limitations - gluten & dairy allergies - there are lots of terrific options. Today I'm having the bistec en rajitas for the 3rd time in a row. I just can't get enough. The atmosphere is comfortable, the people are welcoming. I see families, groups of friends and/or co-workers. I get the impression that this is a favorite neighborhood joint for many people. I am a sucker for chips and salsa, so if a Mexican restaurant has good chips and salsa it's a win for me. El Mexsal delivered on the chips and salsa, but my chicken quesadilla was just okay. The service was also just okay. They were slow taking our order, refilling waters, and delivering our food. Our food was delivered sporadically not all at once, so by the time I had got my quesadilla my brother was almost finished with his dish. I did try my brother's Pupusas and really liked them. It's a good sized space, attractively decorated and efficency managed, that does a lively trade in no-frills Mexican fare. But when you've been there a few times and had your fill of shredded beef enchiladas (my go-to order) you start to notice the fairly expansive menu. Start with pupusas, a savory stuffed corn tortilla, and maybe try the yuca frita con chicharron. Basically, it's hard to go wrong. Also, shout out to the servers. Fantastic Authentic mexican and el salvadorian food. After seeing the location and the sign on the building i thought to myself, uh oh. This could get sketchy. And it was bad of me to judge a restaurant by it's cover. But upon walking in, every seat in the house was filled. I sat down and was immediately served with a big bowl of chips and salsa. Delicious. I had no idea what to order so I went with a conservative approach - chicken enchiladas and a papusa. I was very pleased with both. The food came out pretty quick considering how busy the restaurant was, and the staff was very friendly. The chicken enchiladas were served with beans and rice. They came out hot, and were pretty flavorful. They lacked a little bit of accent flavors, but overall they were a winner. What I would definitely come back here for are the Papusas. I'm still not even sure what they are, but they are delicious. Dump some of the hot sauce they give you on them and go to town. I have never had these anywhere else, so i'm not even sure where or what to compare them to but they are delicious. El Mexsal has food from El Salvador and Mexico. I go for their Salvadoran food so I can't comment on the Mexican food but the place is always packed and many are eating from the Mexican menu. From the Salvadoran part of the menu, I always get pupusas. They have the best pupusas I have ever had. They are delicious white corn "pancakes" with different stuffings. My favorite is the pork, beans, and cheese ones, but they are all good. They are very well seasoned and their refried beans are amazing. They are made fresh so they can take a little while but they are absolutely worth it. I don't care much for the cabbage relish or the super spicy red sauce, but my husband likes them. I think they are perfect just as they are. This time we also ordered from the Salvadoran menu fried ripe plantains with refried beans and fried yucca (root vegetable) with pork. I wish the plantain had been riper but aside from that it was all delicious. Did I mention that their refried beans are amazing? If you have never had pupusas, I recommend you do yourself a favor and go to El Mexsal and try their delicious pupusas. read more

The new management is horrible here. I have literally spent hundreds (maybe over 1,000) dollars at El Mexsal, but that was before the new management came. In addition, I've persuaded hundreds of dollars from family and friends to eat here as well. The food quality has rapidly deteriorated. Today the lights were off for 3/4 of the meal. They would come on for a couple minutes then off for 20 then on then off again. When I've been back the owner does not treat the patrons well. El Mexsal was in my top 2 favorite restaurants of all time, but after how I was treated I'll never return. I will also be telling my family and friends to never return too. El Mexsal serves Mexican & Salvadoran food. Its Salvadoran food is the best in this area and that's what I order every time. I am not Salvadoran but married one and visited the exotic El Salvador. The pupusas at El Mexsal are even better than the pupusas I had in El Salvador. My mother-in-law--who lives in El Salvador--agrees with me. If you are a stranger to pupusas just go ahead a try all the kinds and decide for yourself which one's your favorite. The safest one is the revuelta (cheese,beans, and pork). Also, I always order a tamale salvadoreno because they're great. Another typical Salvadoran dish I like is the "pan con pollo". Sadly it's only served on Saturdays and Sundays. Don't waste your time here. Like others have said I ended up waiting over 50 minutes for my food and it was already made they just didn't let me know until I asked them. The food is good but their service and processes are terrible. You're better off going somewhere else where you don't have to worry about getting your food on time. The best horchata I've had in Provo, absolutely fantastic. I always get their papusa and am never disappointed. 1 1/2 fills me up (after eating some chips while waiting for my food) and at only $2.40 each they're a bargain. The classic pork, bean, and cheese is excellent. I personally am a fan of their loroco, which is a flower herb that is put into the flour of a cheese papusa, although this is not for everyone.
