It really deserves half a star. The place is outdated. It needs a good cleaning from top to bottom. Food items are too greasy, too salty or rubbery. Although some reviews claim this to be bad food or unauthentic, this is just not the case. most reviewers eat once and are blown away when their favorite dish is not to their standard set by another place. with their vast menu there is at least one dish for someone. This was a pretty good experience. Only one other family in the place when we went, so the servers checked on us constantly. The food was fairly good too. It came out very hot and smelled amazing. One note, if they have an excuse to put queso on something, they will, so be aware. Just a couple of issues: Enchildas Suizas were advertising a zesty green tomatillo sauce. The sauce itself was really awesome, but the strong corn tortillas and the heavily seasoned chicken completely masked the taste. That chicken would be great in something like quesadillas, but caused issues here. Chile Rellenos weren't what we were hoping for when we ordered them a la carte. They weren't bad, but when you already have chiles poblanos on the menu, we weren't expecting to have more poblanos just stuffed with taco meat. They actually were pretty good, but not what we were after. The fajita burrito showed me one thing; we should have ordered the actual fajitas to split. Based on the burrito, they would have been killer. The vegetables were perfect on temps and the meat was seasoned divinely. This place isn't bad at all. I don't see the signs of neglect that were mentioned in the past. read more

Kind of a mixed bag. We got the salsa sampler, chicken and steak fajitas, and a combo dinner w/ a chicken burrito and chile relleno. The salsa sampler was so-so: the green salsa was pretty flavorless, the pico was fine, and the red salsa was reeeeally good but super spicy. The normal salsa that comes with the chips by default was our favorite. The chicken burrito was good, but the chile relleno was awful. We think it was the beef (very glad we subbed chicken in the burrito) but it just did not taste good and after 1 bite each we put it aside and focused on everything else, which was pretty good! The chicken burrito was quite good. It's a classic burrito filled with shredded chicken and topped with a red sauce. The fajitas were fine. The meat was cooked well but the veggies needed a little more time in my opinion. Usually onions and peppers are soft and almost caramelized in fajitas, but these still had a crunch to them. Not the worst thing, but a little disappointing. We'll definitely be back, but it wasn't mind-blowing or anything. read more

On our most recent visit, the food still good, but the place is showings signs of neglect. Ceiling tiles warped or misding. One TV all messed up. My grandson needed to use the restroom. The toilet seat was attached loosly with only one bolt. We will be looking for a new mexicsn place. read more

Honestly, I dunno why this place is rated so lowly, is it the location or service? Because every single I've been here (with anyone), the food's amazing. The chips and salsa (or whatever sauce, I'm not very good with Mexican cuisine) are really nice, we usually dig into two baskets since these are better nachos than Moe's, Quoba's, etc. I've tried two of the shrimp dishes (Arroz con Camarones and the one above it, I always forget lol) and wow, those are some nicely flavorful water balloons that pop in your mouth. Gave a piece to my friends in the table, they also loved the flavor and everything about it. I never knew shrimp from a Mexican restaurant could be that good. My friends ordered fajitas, vegetarian and other menu items, loved them as well. Completely underrated place! EDIT: After posting the review, they're now 4-stars, they were 3 1/2. read more

I was up in SW VA for just about 3 hours the other weekend with my dad. We had just gone by an awesome beer shop and were heading back to the ATL when we realized that we needed to stop and eat. This place appeared like a mirage in the dessert and so we stopped in before heading back to georgia. First off, we were a little nervous. We we the only people in here except for the folks running the joint but the chips were warm and the salsa was spicey so our fears quickly faded. I had the enchiladas supreme and was very surprised. It was excellent. Spicey and flavorful , cheesy and perfect. Everything was very fresh tasting and the service was excellent. I can't recall what pops had but he didn't complain so it must not have been bad. The resturant was very clean and the service was fast. We made good time and got back on the road with no stomach issues. So nesxt time in the area i'll be sure to visit again. Hopefully i'll be able to stay longer next time and see the rest of a town that i hear is really nice. read more

Came to this resturant with high hopes based off the 4 star rating. It, however, was hardly capable of being called "mexican food." The guacamole was a tasteless green paste that came out 10 seconds after ordering it. I got the Dinner Combo 11 to sample their enchiladas, tacos, and burritos. They were all equally disappointing. The "cheese sauce" on the "fajita burrito" tasted like melted mozzarella sticks. On top of that, the entirety of the staff was very unenthused to be serving us. The positive parts about the resturant were its atmosphere and the free breath mints offered on the way out. read more

We chose to dine here based on the 4.5 star rating. Appalling. I knew immediately what to expect when I grasped the odd and well beaten "towel rack" door handle. Enchiladas supreme... Only 2 of my 4 enchiladas had remotely warm fillings (Where is the health department when you need them?) "Special" enchilada sauce had zero spice and tasted somewhat like macaroni box cheese packet with chicken stock thrown in for good measure. Chips and salsa were hot and great! Sure, I'm not sick but definitely beyond disappointed by having to pay money for this. El Mariachi is the first place we consider when we want Mexican. The NRV is loaded with Mexican restaurants, but this one is actually not loaded with college students. The servers get to know you (and if you visit enough, you will be put up on the wall of fame as you come in the door). They are family-owned, so the same servers are there any day of the week- they get to know your name, joke with you, and it ends up being a blast. If you drink here, they will love you even more. The drinks are POTENT- so well worth the money. One time, my friend and I wanted jager bombs and they didn't have any redbull. Not even kidding- they went down the street, bought the red bull, brought it back, and made what had to be the largest jager bomb I have ever seen (and only for like three bucks). THIS is service. The food is great. I actually prefer this place over any other Mexican in the area. The Enchiladas Supreme is great, as well as the Roast Con Pollo. Make sure to have a drink with dinner. :) Also get the Fried Ice Cream- they aren't joking with their version! Friendly, never too crowded, and a great place to hang out after you eat. read more

Well I am so impressed with the quality of food. I am a vegetarian and often the selection is scarce and quite pathetic. That was NOT the case here. I ordered the Vegetarian burrito and it was absolutely the best I have ever had. The vegetables and spices were scrumptious and perfectly cooked. The creamy cheese that was melted over it blended into the delicate flavors. The pico de gallo salad was fresh and had a hint of jalapeño which balanced the dish. The Mexican rice was extremely flavorful. I owned and operated a Mexican take out shop and this measured up to what I made! Kudos and I give it a 5 star rating! read more

We stayed at the Comfort Inn next door (which is also really great). We had been driving all day and were starving, so this was super convenient. We were worried because it was 7:00 on a Saturday night and the place was nearly empty, but we decided to give it a try. It was great! Their selection of vegetarian choices were some of the best I've seen. The service was super fast. We were seated fast, food came out fast, they were on top of refills. And the food was great. Both my husband and I got burritos and they were huge. The only downside was the lighting was really dark. If we lived in the area, we would definitely be back! read more

Stopped in for lunch on Saturday. Only a few customers were seated. The menu was very familiar much like most "Tex Mex" Mexican restaurants which included lunch specials. Drink orders came first as expected and the food came out swiftly as well. I ordered the Fajitas "El Mariachi", which was essentially steak fajitas minus the tortillas. The steak and veggies were served on the plate along with refried beads and rice. All orders were piping hot, and my dish was very tasty. All in all a good quick stop for lunch. I am doing this sadly because this place used to be one of my favorite Mexican places In the area. Recently though, the past two times, we have had horrible service by the same waitress, cold and stale chips, and very unflavored food. We will not be going back anytime soon. My favorite Mexican place around VT. Waiters are attentive and the food comes out incredibly fast. Has a typical Mexican menu with good vegetarian options. Nothing special about the rice and beans, but the meals I've had are enjoyable. Not my favorite margarita around but the food is worth the drive down Main Street. I go to Blacksburg to visit a Virginia Tech student and we always love eating at this restaurant. The food here is really good and the price isn't too bad even though some of the portions can be small but the price is right. One of the best Mexican joints in the NRV, but that's not saying a whole lot. It took me some time to adjust to the quality of Mexican food in SWVA. Their chicken dishes are good, some great. Especially enjoy their salsa & fresh chips, Enchiladas Suiza and Pollo Parilla (chicken with tomatoes, peppers, onions and mushrooms). My family and I eat here often, and both the food and service is extraordinary. They are amazingly able to satisfy my entire demanding tribe. Prices are reasonable and the food is authentic Mexican. It is not a high end restaurant, but a clean and descent location. My only complain is that costumers can smoke inside, but they are yet limited to a small area which you may avoid. read more

I've been here twice. The first time I ordered the cheese dip and veggie quesadilla. Service and food were prompt and the food delicious! Very nice sized portions and everything tasted good. My mushrooms in my quesadilla were cooked just right. The next time I went for dinner and got the chicken chimichangas(not sure how to spell that!) But they were delicious as well. The strawberry margaritas are delicious too. Will definitely be back. read more
