I am pretty floored about the amount of bad reviews of this place. Did I just catch it on a good…read moreday? I was actually apprehensive to coming here because of all the reviews on here and Google. The only reason I did, is because it was within walking distance, and I couldn't get an Uber to the sports bar in town. They don't have Uber's or taxis here. But I'm glad I came in and ate. Yes it is true, they could do a little bit more cleaning. All in all it wasn't too bad. I do think they should hire a commercial cleaning service though. I sat at the bar, and I was going to try to eat normal, but not today. So I asked them if they could make me a jalapeno margarita, and they did! My server, pulled another server from the back room to make it for me. They don't normally offer them. So that was a nice gesture and started my visit off right. Typical Mexican restaurant decorum, playing Mexican music. I did find it peculiar that they were playing infomercials on all of the TVs hahaha! During the duration of my visit, a lot of local families we're frequenting this establishment, so it can't be all that bad like everyone says. My server was super nice, attentive, checked on me regularly, and was even conversational. A couple other people that work there also acknowledged me which was nice. I ordered the Mojarra (fried Tilapia) a la Diabla. Before my main dish came out, my rice and beans and avocado salad on served to me on a super hot plate. Asked for a bottle of tapatio, and it was go time. My main course came out shortly after. Man all of my food was straight from the stove / oven to my face. Hot, steaming, fresh. I had plenty of shrimp on top of my tilapia, and the sauce was really good. I make that style of fish at home, so I might try making "a la diabla" at home next time. They also have truck parking, for us that keep America moving. I gambled between the two places I wanted to go to today, and since I couldn't make it to the latter, I made it here, so I consider it a win. I'm never in this area, but if I am, I know where I'll be parking and eating next time. I included the entire menu, because from what I understand it's been updated. Oh, I forgot to tell you what I paid for everything. I had a 32 oz custom margarita, two vodka and sodas, plus my food, and my bill was just over $42. I've spent twice as much at other places across the country, for half of what I got today. Just give it a shot. ***DISCLAIMER*** This pure, uncut, honest review is federally protected under Federal Law by way of Bill #EO14149. I was so happy I stopped in this place for food. The food was awesome we had chicken chimichanga, veg quesadilla, chicken taco & pineapple cake. Every piece was delicious. The food was the least expensive i have ever had and portion was huge. Chimichanga was insanely huge. Call him for an order of tresleches, it is a bliss. Only thing to remember carry cash. No cards accepted. Chef knows English so ask him anything in English :)

Following a quick trip to a wedding in Muscatine, IA, we returned to St Louis and stopped in…read moreColumbus Junction to look for a Mexican restaurant where we had eaten nearly 20 years ago. That restaurant is apparently long gone, but we found Santa Ana Bakery instead. This was a happy eventuality! This is a very small Mom and Pop Mexican restaurant that we can highly recommend. The food is simply comida casera (home cookin'). I get the feel that they would fix whatever you like within reason. They have a huge menu listed on the wall, so I asked for the owner's recommendations. I always like to ask in small places like this, knowing that they can't possibly have everything always ready and fresh. I assume they will recommend what they feel is best that day. He offered fresh chicken mole and pork in a sauce. I don't normally go for mole due to the sweetness, so I ordered guisado de puerco and Ms T ordered tacos de carne asada (sin cebolla, of course). My pork was simple, elegant and delicious. The sauce was dark in color, rich in flavor, with some tomatillo and a hint of oregano. The slices of pork were tender and smothered in the sauce. I sopped the sauce up with soft corn tortillas and when I finished there was really no need to wash the plate. Ms T frowns on my actually licking the plate in public, so I had to do the job with tortillas, which worked out pretty well. Ms T's tacos de carne asada were served properly with plenty of meat on soft corn tortillas and cilantro. The meat was diced fairly fine, nicely seasoned and had a great flavor of the comal. We each had a frijoles pintos which were very basic frijoles de la olla, partly pureed and served thin in their broth. As simple as it gets, but good. I must mention the salsas served with the basket of totopos at the beginning. These were 100% delicious and homemade with the unique touch of la Senora in each. We debated asking to purchase some to take home, but due to warm weather and no cooler, decided not to risk it. One salsa was green, made from minced raw tomatillo with enough jalapeno to give it nice heat. The second was deep red with ground red chile and chipotle. It was rich and spicy with very fresh garlic. The third was almost orange in color, with nice heat, more garlic and delicious fresh chile flavor. All were good, all were nicely spicy. In addition the totopos were clearly fried from real tortillas, on the premises. This is four star food in a five star place. It is quaint, with a bar you can belly up to and enjoy your food on a stool or eat at one of three tables. I'm sure they offer carry-out. Don't forget this is also a bakery and they had an assortment of cookies and pan dulce on display. The owner was friendly and helpful. He appreciated that we were not just there for some ground beef burritos. Now our challenge is to figure out an excuse to be there at lunch time so we can explore the menu more. I wished afterwards I had also ordered the mole to try. They are open seven days a week and serve breakfast! I'm thinking of moving closer. Just have to figure out how to convince Ms T.
