Veggie Fajitas w/Nopal (cactus) instead of mushrooms
    Cara S.

Everybody we talked to in the area loves El Maguey Grill and says it "real" Mexican food that is better than at other places around. So, six of us went there for dinner. The atmosphere was fine, and our server was friendly, though new, so he had to go ask about a few things (no biggie). I was able to get Nopal (cactus) in my Veggie Fajitas instead of mushrooms, so that was nice. It was my first time for cactus, and I liked it. The texture was about like cooked green peppers, but the flavor is sweeter (though not quite as sweet as red peppers). The portion size is huge, so it provided two meals for me. So, I really wanted to give this place 4 or 5 stars (like my friends would), but I cannot for the following reasons: 1. Onions, peppers and mushrooms in veggie fajitas feels like an afterthought. Why not use cactus since they serve it? Or things like squash, zucchini, or broccoli? 2. Their sangria comes in a bottle. Thus, I opted for wine. 3. Their Burgundy wine (haven't seen that on a menu in eons, though I like it) was served ice cold. :(

Wow...don't know what to say. The quesadilla didn't have cheese in it. This was probably the worst Mexican food I've ever had. The Quesadilla was horrible. Someone needs to help this place out ASAP

Beautiful, Modern and loaded with character. What a wonderful restaurant

WOW! Pleasantly surprised, A+++++ Excellent Mexican menu, food was fantastic! Waiters were fast and very efficient, was a spectacular experience right down to the polished silverware. From outside you would never know what was inside. We highly recommend this restaurant.

Not as dark inside in person as in the photo.

Well if you can get food to go you'll likely give this place 4 or 5 stars. The ambiance I would rate 2 stars and the service merits 1 star at best. My wife and I ate there on a Saturday for lunch. The TV had a basketball game on which was fine. But normally the volume is muted in restaurants especially when the TV caption is available. But the TV volume was on loud, competing with the Latino Electronica LOUD music which was playing. I had a slight headache when I arrived and a major one when I left. Here is a positive: the food was very good. My wife had something called Brochetas which was a mix of steak and chicken (had to ask for half and half and server was confused at the request) and veggies on a shish kebab. She got 2 with her order. I don't remember what mine was called but it was a chicken breast with vegetables. Her order was significantly more generous than mine. I ate part of hers and she still had some left so we took it home. If I could erase the experience with the servers I would rate this place at least 4 stars if not higher. All servers that I saw were teenagers. That's fine if they do their job. They did not. The ones we saw were constantly checking their phones, but not checking on us. Granted, I do drink a lot of ice tea and their glasses are a bit on the small side. So I had to regularly ask for refills. Not once did the teeny bopper server ask on her own if I wanted a refill and NOT ONCE did she check back with us to ask if all was ok with the food, etc. On a previous visit, the teenage male that waited on us took our glasses away from the table to refill them. What I didn't like is that he also had in hand someone else's glass from a different table to refill that one. I'm not a germaphobe but that seems unsanitary to me. Our friend in Boonville IN where the other El Maguey is (same management) said that restaurant has gone downhill lately too. She used to love it and choose it over Los Bravos but not any more. Bottom line: food is good but there needs to be better management and better training and supervision of the teenage servers.

Awesome lunch menu in price and selection. Chicken chimichanga was awesome. The chips and salsa were so good we had two baskets! The service was fast as well. The restaurant is clean and nicely decorated. I will definitely return here.

The hot salsa is quite good.

We pulled in on a Sunday evening around 6:00 and the parking lot was packed, always a good sign. The vibe of this place is incredible. Rather than fill the dining room with all the Mexican tropes most do, here the owner leaned into a party vibe. Bright and bold pop art portraits of pop music stars, Mexican wrestling mask art, and a pop music soundtrack from 70s-90s. The menu is also different. Of course there are some of the traditional dishes you would expect, but the menu also pops with some great twists and unexpected combinations of flavors. In fact we loved our meal so much, we left the Holiday World theme park early so we could eat there again before heading home. They were even busier on a Monday night! We recommend the Foxxy Chopped Salad, the Ponata salad, the Chicken Mole (yummm) and the Steak Bowl. We didn't see a single thing come out of the kitchen we wouldn't have eaten. The staff could not have been friendlier. The owner was working the bar the first night we were there and came over to talk to us. He really want everyone to have a great time when in his restaurant. If you happen to find yourself in Jasper, check them out.

Meal service requires you to order at the counter, then your food is brought out to you at a nearby table of your choice. This is a no-frills dining experience, but do not let that fool you...the food is top notch! I ordered a small variety of items to sample...a marinated pork taco, loaded steak fries and for dessert a flan. After a bit of a wait (they make everything to order), it all showed up at our table. The pork taco was dripping with charred pork flavor and came with grilled onions on the side. The double corn tortilla kept everything together as I dug in bite after bite. When the loaded steak fries showed up, my jaw dropped to the ground! This thing was big enough for 3-4 people to share...whoopsy! The crispy fries came layered with strips of grilled steak, a white cheese sauce, guacamole and a sour cream drizzle. Damn these things were good! And if that wasn't enough, I also ordered dessert because I am a sucker for flan (I grew up in Miami and have eaten probably one million flans). Honestly, was not a fan of their version's texture (too grainy, not creamy) and their sauce was not as sweet as many others I've had...but glad to have tried it. For being a small-town Indiana spot, I'd go back here no questions asked. There is an extensive menu for trying new stuff and I'd love to get that chance someday!

Atmosphere is fun, it really embraces the German decor (saw a review or too calling it kitschy, in a good way, which I think is a fair description). Service is friendly and attentive (and in the costumed German garb to keep with the themes). Lots of classic German dishes (several schnitzel varieties, brats, spatzel, etc.). I won't say anything I've had over the years blows me away, but haven't had a bad choice either. The Wiener schnitzel I had most recently was tender and tasty, with a perfectly fried batter, and the German fries were nicely crisped on the exterior and beautifully seasoned. Good beer selection (including some brewed for the restaurant), reasonable wine list...love that you can go all out and have your beer in the classic giant boot! Small gift shop as well, some souvenir items as well as some candies and food options.
