At first assessment El Loro is a typical suburban Mexican restaurant, the decor is as expected as well as the music, and the menu LOOKS typical as well, but that's about where the similarity ends. Their food is not like a fine dining gourmet restaurant or anything, but it is DELICIOUS for this style of restaurant. Also, the services is top-notch, they are always checking on you and are great with special requests. I ordered chicken enchiladas with mole sauce and one of their well-known margaritas, be careful if you order a large...it is LARGE. I was impressed with the quality of the mole, super tasty, and the margarita was yummy! The reason I give them a four and not a three, is because of how friendly and inviting the space and the staff are, you really can't tell from the outside how cozy this restaurant is. El Loro is our favorite of Mexican food in the northeast suburbs. We've always gotten it as takeout and it is almost always a home run when it comes to taste. Our order always includes the queso fundido which is delicious! Other favorites are the fajitas or combination meals. The only miss lately was the Pine el Loro. I'd been wanting to try it for so long but it's probably much better as a dine in dish given that it's served in a half pineapple. Serving sizes are mostly very big and we can usually get two meals out of one with no issues. Another plus is the fresh chips and salsa and Mexican white sauce that comes with every order. We do always seem to have a little bit of an issue with ordering online. It seems to be that the orders are coming in from multiple services and aren't necessarily acknowledged so the wait time could be much longer than what is quoted online. My recommendation is to call them directly to place an order vs using a third party service. This will continue to be our first choice for anytime we are in the mood for Mexican food takeout! read more

There should be a pre-COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 reviews...in before COVID-19 existed times, this place I would easily give 4 stars...now I wonder of their sanitation and merits to keep customers safe. The food was good. I got some tamales de' pollo (chicken tamales) and tacos al pastor and a small side of queso fundido. The queso was great, and the taco's filling more than plentiful, cooked and seasoned beautifully! I enjoyed the tamal como es un tamal mexicano americano...de pollo (a chicken mexican tamal) with a red sauce and some melty white cheese. Good. Maybe enough to satisfy a tamal craving...and yet not enough. My real gripes are with the sanitary lack of restrictions during COVID-19. Many servers, and I saw cooks in the back of house (aka kitchen) also had masks that only covered their mouths or chin...unless they have no nose or no mouth that breathes out, I do not understand how they think this will prevent the spread of the disease, and thus are contributing to it. This is our go to for Mexican takeout. We ordered the queso fundido, steak fajitas, and the pine el loro which is a half pineapple filled with chicken and vegetables. The queso comes with tortillas, but we prefer to eat it with the chips that come with every order. The fajitas come with either corn or flour tortillas and is so much food. We needed to shop in the area and were hungry. As soon as we saw the El Loro sign, we knew where we'd be eating. We both got the dinner combination #11: Beef taco, enchilada, and burrito. I also ordered the jalapeno salsa verse. Th it s is a staple for me whenever I eat at El Loro. Per usual, the service was great (three people sought to help us as we came in, and our waitress was attentive). Also per usual, the food was delicious. My family has been to this restaurant so many times. Are usually rated a four-star or a three star. However, I thought I would go out on a limb and try something different last night. I usually stick to the burritos and predictable dishes. But last night we ordered and I had fajitas Delmar. as always, our food arrived quickly. I've been eating here for years! First- Whatever the white dip is that comes with the complimentary chips and salsa is the best! Downside is they give you a big cup of salsa and a little scoop of the white dip. It's free though, can't really complain! The food is really good. I especially like the chicken fajitas! I also like the chicken taco salad or just chicken tacos supreme when I'm being basic. There's almost always a fast turnaround when ordering food here. Even when I eat here when it's busy the food always comes out fairly quick. The drinks are good! The flavored margaritas & daiquiris are my favorite. I have noticed that when I get my check the drinks actually are $1-2 more than the price listed on the menu. We've questioned our waitress about this once and she said the menus were old- which isn't really an excuse for the up-charge. If you change your prices you should also update the menus. El Loro means "The parrot" and this place was decorated with parrots in a festive manner. We were greeted quickly and ushered to a booth where we had very attentive service. My boyfriend's food came up before mine, only a couple minutes, but it's clear they serve the food right when it's hot and don't let it wait around at all. We had chips and salsa and mystery white sauce while we waited and our server brought us extra salsa and extra chips which was very nice. I loved my shrimp taco salad. The shrimps were huge and very hot, just the right amount of food. We don't drink alcohol but plenty of people there that night (1.11.2021) were drinking alcohol as this was the first chance to be back at bars and restaurants since the closing. I also wasn't expecting it to be smothered in a cheese sauce I'm lactose intolerant and it didn't say that it was served like that on the menu. As for the service, it was very slow. We decided to try El Loro in its new spot on Rockford Road. Decorated nicely and we were seated quickly. Service was good and that is when everything went sideways. We were given chips and sauce and their famous white sauce, which has really changed. Too mayo or something so it was too thick to dip into. We got two margaritas and a Diet Pepsi. We started to notice that there lots of tables who were waiting for their food and had lots of chips at their tables. It took a long time before someone came to take our order. We ordered a bean dip which came to us quickly, but it was horrendous. Instead of a thick bean dip, it was like a bowl of pinto beans in their juices with a thin layer of queso or whatever it was...no flavor, no spice...our food arrived later. I ordered the Enchiladas Supreme...white, watery corn tortillas filled with very little of anything. They were suppose to be a cheese, beef, chicken, and bean, but it was hard to tell with all the lettuce on top. It was suppose to have a red sauce, but it was missing. Hubby had a burrito with a mix of chorizo, chicken, shrimp, and beef with no sauce inside or anything. Just a big mess...the sauce on the outside was the same sauce that was on the bean dip. This is my neighborhood Mexican restaurant. It's really hit or miss. I eat here usually once a week, or at least every 2 weeks. It's cheap, fast, and my 4 year old will eat it. I've found your experience will always depend on the server. Depending on who you get, there will be extra charges for things that normally come free. The chips are also hit or miss - they're either fresh or very stale. They do have the white ranch-ish sauce served with the salsa, that I am quite a fan of, and the cheese dip is good. Friendly service in an authentic Mexico environment. I stopped in for lunch while waiting for my car to be finished at the nearby Regal car wash. Chips were served warm and crisp. They were served with a delicious creamy spicy dip and a traditional red salsa. I ordered number 7 off the lunch menu. My food came out about 15 minutes later steamy hot. I used to like this restaurant a lot! Last night will likely be the last time I eat there. Upon arrival I saw a sign in the door that said they now change a surcharge for using a credit card (I didn't even know that was legal, I looked it up and apparently it is, but if they are charging it on debit cards that is not legal, I used a credit card), I asked them about it and they said it was because they got a new machine. We came to El loro around 3 -- it wasn't busy but service was a little slow, not terrible though. The staff was nice and the complimentary chips and dip is always a plus. The place is very festive, it has a bar in the back, and a little TV hung on the wall that showed a soccer game. I have been to this El Loro many times. I think that their management switched recently, which has lead to some bad changes. This used to by my favorite Mexican restaurant, if not my favorite restaurant in general. Since the new management, the service is slow and most of the usual wait staff is gone. I am not sure if they are understaffed or just poorly trained. The chips are always cold and have no salt on them. The white/ranch sauce that comes with the chips is lacking and today it tasted like it was just lukewarm mayo. They used to have a specials board with special deals for each day of the week. This was a huge draw for my boyfriend and I and we would always come in on our favorite days of the week for a great deal. My how this place has gone down hill. Used to be the go to Mexican place around my house, but, over the years for some reason it's gone from the "go to" to an after thought. This weekened, I decided to see if it was as good as it used to be or as bad as it had gotten. Sorry to say, as bad as it got. Was seated in the corner of the bar area. Literally, nobody there except for a couple drunk chicks at the bar for happy hour (it was 4pm), and NOBODY dining in, and we're seated in a corner booth that requires one person to enter it at a time to sit down. Regardless, we get the complimentary chips and salsa, and that is good. Order the Mozz sticks hoping they'd gone back to the original way they used to do it which was house made sticks... nope. Generic, horrible frozen ones. And they're served with a ranch packet. Yup, a god damn packet of Kraft ranch dressing. Not the house ranch sauce you get with your chips or even a marinara/salsa mix. A packet of dressing. Some how my girlfriend gets a refill during this, while we both have empty glasses sitting there, yet my water goes unfilled for the entire course of the meals. After a nearly 15 minute wait between putting in the app order and the return of the server, we finally order. Meanwhile, the chips and apps are completely gone by now. I get the burrito deluxe and she ordered some combo platter with a little of everything. Food took about 20 minutes to come out in a dead restaurant. How? I don't know. How do I know it was 20 minutes? Running time on the soccer match blaring throughout the bar with the aforementioned drunk chicks yelling at the tv (which made me at least laugh considering nothing happened, not even a shot on goal). Food was meh. Rice was cold, and the food was pretty tasteless. Lucky I didn't eat all the salsa and ranch from about an hour ago to put on my burritos. The girlfriend's food was ok. Taco was the best part while the tostada and enchilada were mehs. Glad I didn't need anything. I would have hated to have bothered my server with her job. Lucky enough, I didn't see her once through the meal to have to burden her with the request for more water or salsa or guac or anything. Was delivered the bill rather quickly without being asked about dessert, and of course not told to go to the front to pay (lucky I remembered or we'd still be waiting there trying to figure out where to pay). All in all, totally regret even giving this place a try and was so disappointed I had to apologize for actually subjecting my girlfriend to this shithole. I was just here with some friends for dinner on a Friday night. We arrived at about 6:30 and were seated right away. My friend asked the server what size margaritas were available and after listening to her he ordered both of us large Texas margaritas. She didn't bat an eye and went to get our drinks. She returned with two 60 ounce margaritas for the two of us. Seriously? This was annoying. If our table of 5 drank those two 60 ounce margaritas we would all end up wasted. We all felt she should've spoken up and said, "Hey, what's your alcohol tolerance? Do you want to vomit tonight?" Unfortunately, she didn't and we were only able to drink about 1/4 of each of them before we left. Foolishly, my other friend asked the server for her advice on a few menu items and she kept suggesting platters for 2. She kept saying, "No, just for me, I'm not sharing my dinner..." but she kept it up. She's tiny, so we think the server was just trying to get our tab up. The food was kind of gross. I had a combo plate with a chile releno and an enchilada. The beef enchilada was good but the chile releno was nasty. I was heading Northwest and noticed it. What I like is if you drive over Broadway everything is just there, no driving around. It's very large and roomy in here. For the holiday there were only 2 waiters and it was busy, so it took about some time to get our order taken, but got the chips immediately. The waiters were very different than the other places. They were dressed up in black slacks and white shirts, and looked very machisimo. It was a nice touch. I noticed the booths were made up of a nicely decorated wood. I got my usual 2 tacos, the shell wasn't really crunchy. This might be because it was stuffed with meat. The same good Mexican soft cheese, but it wasn't as finely shredded like the others I've been to. It tasted the same, I'm just used to my nice mound of cheese. I never would have discovered this place if I hadn't moved to Crystal. Although its quite tasty...it does not really warrant driving a long distance to eat there. If you're right in the city, there are a handful of tasty Mexican spots that are equally good. The one thing that sets this apart from most other Mexican places I have been to (and there is hardly a shortage) is the delicious, mysterious white sauce that accompanies the salsa and chips. I assume its cheese based, but I have no proof of this. Last time I visited I got buzzed off Dos XX and had a delicious, delicious platter for a reasonable price. I will be honest though, the service in this place sometimes straight up sucks. I have had to flag down the server to get the check on a few occasions. Oh, and avoid it Thursdays...they have a mariachi band that plays from 6-8 PM and they bounce from room to room. The menu provided all sorts of choices that I haven't seen at other Mexican restaurants... which makes me look forward to eating there again and trying something new! We started off with some chips and salsa and added on a big bowl of warm cheese dip. I ordered the Burrito Grande which was very good. To drink... a cold glass of horchata. The fish tacos were done perfectly but my shrimp fajitas were well overcooked. The fajita veggies were green peppers, onion and tomatoes. This presented with stewed tomatoes along with the overcooked shrimp. The refried beans were soupy. On the whole, the dinner was very overpriced for what you received in quality food. The service was ok, a bit lacking in followups for refills. I was impressed by the fish tacos as the fish is usually overcooked, but not here this time. Long long time fans of El Loro but just had the worst experience there... sure miss the old manager Oscar he was the best! I don't believe our server spoke any English ...If you needed anything beyond just ordering by number... She couldn't understand it and got many things wrong! Simple things like beans no rice... My friend and I went to the Crystal El Loro yesterday. We had been giving it a break from our monthly get-together lunch rotation due to the quality declining. But figured why not give it another try. Food was good, service good. But after maybe the worst night either of us had experienced, we compared notes today and both of us were so sick overnight.
