I have never been to el lemons original location so this review only pertains to the chestnut hill spot. This one popped up in September and it was time to check it out. Man oh man were we bummed out. This one is rated a "never going back". It's all about the food people! Fire the chef! The staff are super nice. The outdoor patio is really wonderful overlooking the CH west train line and very spacious! Onto the food.... The shrimp tacos came out of a freezer and must have been sourced from a land where people have no tastebuds. Simply lifeless baby frozen shrimp the side of a dime- I mean are they even real shrimp being that small?!?! The sides were cafeteria style bland refried beans and a crappy scoop of red rice. The chips with stuff on them..... were equally bland. I can't even call them nachos without being pained.....we were offended by the lack of interest in making them nachos worth calling them nachos. Worst nachos since the Plymouth meeting chips and queso at the movie theatre. Yeah....that bad. We left most of our plates uneaten. And I didn't feel well afterwards probably from sheet disappointment. Have the chefs ever been to another restaurant serving any other Mexican, Latin American, or South American food? Use some spices and get some better quality ingredients here people! They could use some training and cooking lessons. Chestnut hill is not short of good places to eat; we have a good Mexican spot down the hill already but could always welcome another quality establishment in town. Competition is good! What we don't need is a budget Mexican restaurant that has food so bad none of the locals would ever go back. read more

I really can't say enough! Th food here is so good! We are trying to work our way through everything on the menu and haven't found an item yet that disappoints - although the guac is kind of boring. If you like spicy stuff, their red sauce is where it's at!!!! And the quesadillas are overflowing with meat and cheese (heads up, chorizo is pretty messy). Came here a few months ago with my family, and had a good experience. I got the nachos with guac and salsa, as well as shrimp tacos. They were both good and hit the spot, however they weren't the best I've ever had. The staff was friendly and kind and got our order out quick which was nice, and they continually made sure that we were okay. If you are coming down City Ave with a craving for some Mexican food, I recommend you give this little place a try! read more

BUYER BEWARE As a long time customer to one of my favorite restaurants I am actually really upset. I ALWAYS order rice and tacos for my kids. Today, I guess the cook and register gentleman didn't need to wash hands. The young counter gentleman just put his hands right into the food sans glove or a good wash... I'm from restaurant life myself and he could've at minimum did some hand sanitizer! Lol So I had to give my kids tacos back. I even let them KEEP the UPCHARGE for the lettuce and tomatoes! Good Mexican food has been non-existent within a 25 minute radius of where I live so this is a game changer. need a quick fix for your taco needs? this is where you will find it. they have consistent food friendly staff and complimentary margs ! come on doesn't get better than that!!! it's a cute little hole in the wall with Mexican decor. my husband got two Barbacoa tacos, Mexican style and two chicken supreme tacos, both very good, but he believes that Barbacoa is severely underrated. we got notches for the table that were very good and I got to Pastor tacos. Pretty good "chain" Tex- Mexican restaurant. It has always been consistent in quality and quantity provided. I really enjoyed the mole on top of my burrito- it was a pretty thick layer. I also found that there was a lot of shrimp in my fajita mix which I rarely find at most restaurants. read more

Visited the new El Limon location today on City Avenue. Very kind owner, really helpful in not just welcoming customers, but answering any questions about the menu items. As for the food, I tried a grilled chicken quesadilla and it was delicious! You get plenty of sour cream, lettuce and diced tomatoes on the side, Also can request hot sauce with your order (it is good with or without it, cannot go wrong either way). so I think ultimately with this place it depends on what kind of taco you want....I usually like either a fish taco or pulled meat taco. I got the specialty fish taco, barbacoa, carnitas and grilled chicken. All flour tortilla. I just couldn't make up my mind on the meat. My thoughts - barbacao and carnitas spot on. Super yummy. Would absolutely order these again. Fish taco: For the price I paid and just the taste and amount of fish I got, I would never order the specialty fish taco from here again. It was very thin, not much fish, and just dry? I've had much better fish tacos at a place that was not a taqueria. Grilled chicken just ok. Holy moly! Stumbled into this place while visiting a friend. It sure didn't look promising and we thought about leaving. It's not in a very nice location, has a spartan interior with only a couple of tables on tile floor. You order from a counter and the food is brought to your table. The enchiladas were recommended by the young man who works there and who represents the brand so well. We also got 3 sopas and tacos for our group of 3 and an app of quac. From there every single bite was amazing. It was San Antonio good right here in our virtual backyard. Get the chicken tinga or barbacoa- you won't be sorry. Saddened because the photos and reviews looked great. I ordered 3 fish tacos w/ rice and beans from their specialty menu via their site. It took about 20 minutes. Wasn't really tripping about time. However, when I returned home with the food I noticed that the fish was very dried out and unseasoned. I couldn't even eat it cause it was just rubbery and dry. The rice and beans were good, for the cost. Also: their site says they have mango Jarritos; they do not. Most likely will not return again. Hoping to get a refund because these tacos aren't edible. read more

I loved it. I tried it for the first time today on a whim and I'm very glad that I did. I ordered the steak burrito with tomatillo, carnitas taco, and tinga taco. All of it was amazing. I would have liked a bit more of the lettuce and tomatoes that comes with the burrito, but now that I've tried it, I'll just ask for it next time. My wife and I stopped here for a late lunch and the food was awesome. We started with our free margarita which was great. I had the enchiladas with Tinga(shredded chicken) smothered with Mole sauce, my wife had the Sopas. We also had chips and salsa. The salsas were both a spicy red and a green tomatillo. The staff was great and there were no issues serving a gluten sensitive vegetarian. I look forward to stopping here again. read more

Everything we had was terrific. Tacos, enchiladas and burritos. The only thing i found disappointing was the chips, they were very thick.

I was excited to try this place because of the high rating. Unfortunately, I was really disappointed. I ordered the Loaded Nachos and added chicken. While the guacamole was delicious, it felt more like I ordered chips and guacamole/salsa, instead of nachos. There was one tiny scoop of beans all in one spot and almost no cheese. The other El Limon locations seem to have great food, so we thought this would be the same. Unfortunately, the nachos had some stale pieces and the guacamole on top was brownish. It was also way too spicy and had different amounts of each topping versus being even across the dish. (Mostly guacamole and pico, barely anything else). The chicken in the burrito was more like pre-cut packaged chicken versus the high quality meat at the other locations. The side of guacamole looked way better than what was on the nachos, and those chips were better, too. However, it was also too spicy to really enjoy. We didn't get to specify the spice level (or knew we should?) so it was not the best surprise. I really hope this location makes some changes to be more consistent with the other El Limons in the area. read more

22$ later my dog enjoyed my steak and shrimp fajitas. This location does not uphold the El Limon name. Food was disgusting and not fresh. The ambiance was run down half of the glass door has wood in it making the location look abandoned. The bathroom is horrendous with a toilet so high you have to balance yourself on a stool to use it. I would just stay away from this location nothing was good. I ordered steak and shrimp fajitas with an extra side of rice and beans. The sides are disrespectfully small for the price. I asked for side of sauce when I ordered but the staff must have been distracted by their friend stopping by and eating. read more

I was so shocked to have the food fall so short of the bar that other reviews set for it. Across my meal I had the Al Pastor taco, Carnitas taco, and Barbacoa enchiladas. The enchiladas had a decent taste to them, but were far too dry, and the barbacoa had extremely tough pieces that were impossible to chew. I had the al pastor and carnitas in the tacos, which wasn't bad, but both had a ton of thick grease on the meat. The tortillas, as well as the cilantro and onion on top, were delightful though. One of the biggest disappointments of the meal were the chips and guac. The chips were so hard that they were hard to bite, and weren't fun to eat. The guac was almost liquidy, but aside from weird texture had a good taste. The salsa were KILLER though, loved those! Overall, I may give this place another try, maybe I caught them on a bad night. read more

Ordered take out at this location. The staff were really nice when we walked in. We ordered the vegetarian enchiladas with mole sauce, al pastor torta, and the chicken dorados. The vegetarian enchiladas and the chicken dorados were awesome. Loved the red sauce that came with our order. I dipped it In the crispy and seasoned dorados and it was so good. The al pastor sandwich was really underwhelming. I never thought that too much pineapple with al pastor would be a bad thing. But it was a bit too much/too sweet. The bread and chipotle sauce were interesting to say the least. However I still really enjoyed this places. It's a very affordable place on City Ave near other shops (I got Kung Fu tea along the way since it was near by.) Will definitely go back again! read more

El Limon is a great restaurant when representing Hispanic food. A lot of residents go to Qdoba as it is the closest "Hispanic" restaurant near Rosemont. Although that may be true El Limon is also close by. El Limon has several locations in different cities in Pennsylvania. Some locations also offer outdoor dining. Friendly service, excellent food at a low cost. Residents should try to go to this restaurant to try new things and learn to have an open mind. Two weeks ago, I brought Flan and some actually enjoyed it despite their comfort zone and familiarity. It teaches residents to break barriers and break those stereotypes as well with "tacos" and having to be Mexican to be considered Hispanic. read more

I was in Philly for work and decided to try a more local place instead of a larger chain. I didn't know "tinga" was chicken and I asked if they had chicken. She rudely goes "Do you want chicken?" I asked if I could have my enchiladas striped with one of each of the 3 sauces and she told me no, you only get one. I'll never be back there or anyone other location. The food was amazing, great portions and authentic. Ambiance of the restaurant is casual with cute decor - very cozy. The guac and chips were great (more chips please!) and our entrees came out fast. There was a little miscommunication with the waitress, so I was grateful for my friend who is fluent in Spanish, but overall everyone was cheerful and you can't complain about Spanish speaking waitstaff at a Mexican joint - only heightens my approval! Stopped by the new El Limon for dinner last night with my parents. It seems as if there's an El Limon in every town in the Main Line, but I'm not complaining. This new location is great for us. Situated next to Soul Food Meals and Sardi's Pollo, the shopping center has undergone a real upgrade over the years, having preivously been nail salons and Subway restaurants. The complimentary margs were great and they did not skimp on the tequilah. With respect to the food, we thoroughly enjoyed our enchiladas and burritos. Love the tomatillo and molé salsas. El Limon is as authentic as it gets for Mexican food on the main line. The prices for a quality sit down restaurant cannot be beat. If any of y'all are familiar with Dave Portnoy's pizza ratings, this place is firmly a 7.9. Great spot to have. Welcome to the neighborhood El Limon! read more
