The food was good. Not as good as California central valley good but it was good for gold country foothill mexican food. The restraunt was very nice inside and very clean. The wait staff was professional and friendly. The food was pricey but everyone has to make a living so whatever... One complaint is my wife and I ordered steak fajita dinner and I told the lady we were going to share it. She asked, is it for 1 or 2 people. I said 2 people, we are sharing. She came back with 2 dinners and was double the price that I wanted to pay. Could have been my fault for not being clear enough, or she may have wrote the ticket how she wanted to increase sales. Dinner here on Wednesday, 5/27/2020. Our first dinner out since the big shutdown started. Inside there were several booths occupied. We sat outside in the courtyard. There was only one other table occupied, down at the other end of the courtyard. Tables spaced well away from each other. The employees wore face masks, the customers did not. The service was prompt and friendly. The food and drinks were good and prices appropriate. Wide-ranging menu. The courtyard - nothing fancy but comfortable and nicely decorated. The X best Mexican restaurant in Sonora hits rock bottom. We were utterly disappointed. Way over priced especially since they now charge $4 extra if you want chips and salsa (what Mexican restaurant does that!!!) Burrito does not include sauce, sour cream, or guacamole! Pretty standard commercial Mexican-American fare. Ordered Burrito Supreme Lunch Special with Chicken and it came bathed in choice of green or red sauce so it was pretty mushy and grew cold very quickly. Price is a touch high. Serving sizes seem very large. Came with some slightly too salty fresh homemade chips and a decent chipotle salsa (tasted like smoked or roasted) in a large basket. Also had a Corona, also a touch expensive but served properly with an ice-cold glass and a slice of lime. Not good value but refreshing in these last gasps of summer. Overall about average, serving sizes are more than enough to split between two people, in which case might be a good value but bad business. Recipes need an update to modernize or maybe even a return to real Mexican cuisine. read more

We checked in and were told it was a 30 minute wait so we left our phone number and waited just outside in the shade. After 45 minutes, we asked the hostess how much longer and she said that we were next. She then seated 2 groups of people that had not waited at all but had just come inside. When we questioned her about this she actually told us that she thought the larger parties of 4 and 5 people were our party of 2. We walked out. This was our favorite restaurant that we regularly went to. Now, we have to find a new favorite. We don't mind waiting, but don't lie to our faces after being caught letting friends in ahead of customers that followed the rules. We won't return as long as that hostess is there. read more

I had lunch here yesterday with my aunt, sister, my brother-in-law and two of their friends. It's rare that I make the drive down to Sonora to visit my sister but when I do, I like to go out to one of their local restaurants. I had been here once before, years ago. Long before I was a Yelper. Again, the service here was OUTSTANDING! I was sure to ask our server's name to include it in my review. Emily has some of the best people-skills I have seen in a young server. She was witty, made us laugh and went out of her way to provide a great dine-in experience. She was attentive but didn't bother us. She and the atmosphere of the restaurant took this review to three stars from one or two stars. We sat out on the patio. Our table was mostly shaded and the weather was perfect! I wanted so much to like the food but it was just NO BUENO! I ordered a simple, Pork Tamale and Beef Enchilada combination. My tamale was horrible! It was severely dry and I could only eat what was in the middle, and I'm not sure if I should have. It was obviously microwaved because of varying temperatures within the tamale. Piping hot on the outside and somewhat cold on the inside. The texture of the cornmeal was rough and dry. Almost as if it had been cooked prior to our arrival...like maybe the day before. ? The same was with my enchilada. The beef inside was way overcooked. I'm pretty sure it had been microwaved too. I was scared to eat the beef and only ate the surrounding ingredients....exactly opposite of how I ate the tamale. I looked around the table to take notice of everyone else's food. I thought it was quite comical that even though everyone ordered different dishes, it all looked pretty much the same with slight variations. I didn't complain as to not damper the mood. I couldn't tell if others were as unsatisfied as I was but their bill was taken care of for them, so I'm sure they wouldn't have said anything anyway, as to not offend the person paying for their meals. Their water was yucky! Not sure what the deal is with that. Maybe they use tap water to maybe they just haven't cleaned out their ice machine? I don't know but my sister agreed and said, "Yeah, their water is gross and that's why I get iced tea." I HAVE to reiterate how great Emily's service was to us. I may give this place another chance IF they work on their food. Maybe hire a chef who can cook authentic Mexican cuisine or invite Robert Irvine (from the Food Network's Restaurant Impossible) because I really don't understand how they will be able to stay in business since their food is so bad. The reason I gave 3 stars was all because of Emily....ohh AND their chips & salsa was really good! I'm not sure which was better. The chips or the salsa. They were both great! read more

The only place open on a Monday with a dog friendly patio so I came here. El arroyo was closed. Service was great. Chips and salsa were ok, the chopped cabbage with it was the highlight. Limited vegetarian options, I ordered the veggie fajitas. They were weird. It was supposed to have summer squash and zucchini but it was almost all onion, cooked to total sogginess and in a pool of weird brown oiliness that tasted like...soy sauce? I'm not sure but is very salty, a little sweet and tasted like nothing Mexican at all. The sparse squash slices were sliced very thin and over cooked, rendering them piles of mush. The guacamole looked fine and green but tasted like it was made from an overripe avocado, like maybe the brown parts were removed or just old. The salsa Fresca was pretty good as were the pinto beans and rice. After eating so much rice and oil I didn't eat the corn tortillas so took them to go. I peaked at them and they looked like the generic store bought variety. If I come again, and I just might due to limited options, I'd avoid the fajitas and probably order a basic salad with beans and salsa Fresca and hope for the best. read more
