We recently discovered El Jalisco and had a couple nice lunches here (July 2020). They are open for dining, with alternate tables blocked off to maintain social distancing. The chips are fresh and warm, and come with both regular salsa and hot salsa; we preferred the hot. Our first meal here was just great, really knocked out of the park with pollo poblano for me and carnitas for my husband - both excellent! When we returned, he tried the steak poblano which was good but not as great as the pollo poblano I had had. I had another chicken that had vegetables and cheese sauce, which, again, was good although not quite as good as the first dish I had had. The cheese sauce is just thin and so can't compare with the rich cheese served on the pollo poblano. I really appreciate that they offer dishes with real, fresh vegetables in them. Pricing is very fair, and they seem to sell margaritas and beer (which we didn't try, it being lunch time). We saw some folks ordering what I guess were margaritas, which were quite electric green! Festive! For Covid protection: All staff wear masks, and a shield is in place at the register. The entry area is a little small and this place is pretty popular, so it can get a little crowded there for social distancing. This is a great place, we will definitely be back! read more

The waitress was very good. The food is not Mexican or even Tex Mex. I ordered a chile rellano and the chile was the size of a quarter with slop of ground beef and queso. The enchilada was beef and the taco. The beef had no flavor . The sauce no flavor. The taco was so so just bland. The Guacamole dip was store bought mush. Horrible. I've been to at least a dozen Mexican restaurants in this area, and this is one of my favorites. The food is at least as good as the others of it's type, but the prices are better and the service is friendly. The restaurant is everything you expect from local SC Mexican - delicious cheese dips, chips and home-made salsa on the table, etc. - except the prices are better and the environment is more intimate. Tip - give the lunch "pollo fundido" a try! Chicken smothered in sour cream and cheese wrapped in a warm tortilla - nothing like it! I will definitely be back again! read more

The food was delicious! The ambiance was great and the staff were very friendly. Overall I enjoyed my experience and the food. It was a bit concerning that no menu is provided with alcoholic beverages (margaritas, sangrias, and etc). The beer menu was decent. The lime margarita was a green darker then expected and did not taste good. It tasted soapy and as if tequila used was saturated with juice. Overall 7.5 out of 10. read more

I've been coming to El Jalisco since 2020 and I always order the same exact thing. So, imagine my shock last week when my plate was extremely lacking. Every single time I've had leftovers. But this time I barely had enough to feel half full. So I asked the waiter if maybe I got a kids portion or the lunch portion. He said no, this is all the dinner comes with. Like I haven't ordered it 20+ times. I had also ordered a large cheese dip with my food. It was not brought out. Needless to say I was not pleased. There was no offer to fix the issue or have the manager address it. Which would have been an easy fix considering how slow the restaurant was. Instead, the entire meal nobody came to refill our drinks and nobody came to see if we needed anything including a box or the check. I felt extremely disrespected by this experience and will not return until I'm given an apology for this poor customer service. I will no longer recommend El Jalisco. There are too many other Mexican restaurants that value their customers. read more

We came in today, the service was slow we had to grab our own menus, and waited a little over five minutes before someone came in and took our drink order, keep in mind there was only one other family here, so the restaurant was empty, so there was no excuse for the slow order. We ordered guacamole and it was just a puréed mess, lacking salt, lemon, onions and tomatoes. We finally ordered and the food was good but generic tasting, nothing to rave about. Overall this place can use an update on the interior, service efficiency, and better food. read more

Wow, my experience was NOT what I had expected. The Yelp reviews were mostly favorable so I was looking forward to trying this place out. In addition, the place was packed, so that is usually a good sign too. We had a kindly server who brought us chips and salsa. Those were okay, but nothing to wow about. Standard stuff you get at most places. We placed our orders and continued our conversation. I noted that our water glasses all went to empty and the server never reappeared to fill them. But our chips fell empty and another staff person brought another bowl. Nice! When our food arrived, I was not impressed. It looked like a glop of stuff on a plate. In fact, each person's dish looked more or less the same. Certainly not very appetizing. As I ate my dish, I was still uncertain that it was what I had ordered. Same for my mates. The food wasn't bad, but it was not great and certainly not distinctive. The bottom line is that there was nothing here worth going back for. It was bland or generic all the way around. I understand that some people may like that, but we have some great options in our town. There are quite a few better choices nearby. I see no need to return here ... or for savvy diners to go here either. read more

I debated a bit on the last star but just in comparing El Jalisco with several other similar options around town, they do deserve it. I mean, you get it's not a five star restaurant right? It's a small, typical operation on the side of Wade Hampton. However, so many of these similar restaurants just phone it in and El Jalisco clearly takes their food seriously. We've eaten 3 times there now and they have become our go-to Mexican choice. We eat meat and this is where the lazy, corner cutting usually takes place. Their chicken dishes are excellent - nice thin/pounded breast meat but good quality not the old rubbery junk that seems the standard. I had one "steak" dish and is was the typical thin piece w/ a bit of fat but it was tasty and not the gray, dried out standard item. Their carnitas are very good and I got the Chile Colorado beef tips which was really delicious. Who knows what this really is but the meat was tender, flavorful and not a bit of gristle. The red sauce on this was really tasty particularly tarted up with the real hot sauce that they will provide on request. They offer real poblanos i.e stuffed with cheese and grilled on top of a variety of dishes and are clearly turning these out every day. Many dishes include fresh grilled veggies including squash - very nice. We've only visited during the Covids and the service has been excellent; friendly, quick and attentive. El Jalisco is turning out an excellent product and doing a great job. read more

I was on my way to look at stained glass windows and happened to see El Jalisco and pulled in. It was an easy in and out and there was a parking spot. Besides I was very hungry at this point. The food is similar to other restaurants who serve a Speedy Gonzales - inexpensive and filling. The restaurant is clean and the service was quick and efficient and I was welcomed with a smile and hello. The beans were a little 'saucy' and the sauce on the enchilada was a light red-orange color and tasted better than it looked. The taco was very good and the shell was crisp although there was a lot of cheese on top. I keep forgetting that restaurants here serve tacos with lettuce and cheese or just cheese and not lettuce and tomatoes. If you want quick Mexican food or are in a hurry, this place will fit the bill. All of the El Jalisco restaurants I've visited are all clean and offer quick and courteous service. They have all been fairly crowded which is also a good sign. read more

Friendly service, clean restaurant, but the food was sub par. The sauce on the enchilada was a light red color like tomato soup but a little thicker, with very little flavor. My taco shell was stale and chewy. They serve two salsas with the chips, and the spicy one was better and the only thing that made the meal edible. Disappointing. read more

We liked eating at this restaurant at least 3-4 times a month but last two times eating here the service was bad today half way through our dinner my daughter and my glasses were empty and finished our meal waited another 10 min and finally fixing to get up and ask the cashier for our check our waiter finally ask if we need anything else just the check please and on top of that my daughter gets a side of rice and beans that's all she eats there but the amount of food on her plate was about half what she normally gets total it filled up half of her small plate I don't think we will be going there for a while read more
