This place is SOOOOO DELICIOUS. The hot Cheetos and cheese were nostalgic I ordered 2 (hey no judging!). But onto the more adult exquisites; BEST PASTOR TACO OUT THERE. As soon as you bite into the taco you will see life differently. How could you not love it?!? The chicken taco was simple, yet still delicious. Now to the green sauce.... Literal perfect balance of hot and mild; this is what the folks want when we say medium sauce. The gentleman at the window was very kind and eager to serve! Go show them some loveeee!!

GET YOUR $2.50 BAD TACOS. This place use to be good back when the other owners had it a couple months back, I gave them 2 or 3 chances to make up for the bad service they now give. It is unfortunate, I use to order 50$ worth of tacos for the family when we would want tacos for dinner. The last time I did come was when they raised the prices again, 2.50. Which I understand with the meat prices going up, it means the tacos will go up. Since the tacos were good, and my only go-to place for them, I thought it will continue to be worth the price for the time being. I ordered 8 tacos and a quesadilla, they gave me the wrong order, which was 2 quesadillas. I chose to eat in my truck, as I was with someone else. We opened the food, and realized I was missing the tacos and had an extra quesadilla. We closed it back up and I went back to let them know my order was wrong. They did not hesitate to believe me, but whenever they had the tacos ready, they asked for my extra quesadilla back. I had no trouble giving it back as I did not pay for it, although I have been to places that will let you keep it for their mistake. On top of that, I touched the quesadilla as I opened it, makes you wonder if they will give to someone else. Whatever. I gave it back and received my tacos. I went back to the truck and as I opened the tacos, we realized how little fajita the tacos had, I was upset, I took pictures. The tacos had more tortilla than meat, and they removed the avocado, we realized this as we tasted the cheese that tasted as if it was going bad. You would think with the prices going up, they will give you more meat or keep it the same. I was very disappointed with the tacos I received. I couldn't even finish them. I didn't want to argue any further as I feared them possibly making my tacos worse, and wasting my time. I went ahead and told them that I was not pleased with the past few visits, but especially with this one. I have been a long customer of this taco truck, but honestly, after a change of owners.. this place is going to go downhill if it hasn't already. I am upset because here I am now looking for a new taco truck, but I did make sure to let them know I will not be coming back. For what it is worth, save the trip. I do hope nobody else has that experience. I feel embarrassed that I recommended them to my coworkers, and brought them here to eat and having them have this bad experience happening to them. It's as if I refer someone to a company and they make me look bad. OH AND THEY WERE GREASY, BRING BACK THE OLD OWNERS FOR BETTER TACOS.

This visit was no different, my workmate and I jumped in an Uber and headed here, we walked in and the place was buzzing, we walked through the different rooms as we were taken to our table, everybody was having a grand time and the atmosphere was positively buzzing. We were sat in the back room with lots of windows and given menus. We ordered Margaritas and were brought chips and salsa. We also ordered queso dip, which was brought with our drinks. The Margaritas were excellent as I remembered and the queso dip was hot and tasty as well. I ordered Fajitas, and they were steaming hot and delicious! The servers were all smiling, helpful and friendly. I love this place!

The chilled water is unfiltered tap water, for that fresh from the outdoor water hose taste…read more The bartender was cranking up the music as if he was trying to turn the bar into a club. Mind you, it's a Tuesday night at 9pm. Flautas de pollo were bland AF chicken. Poasted, shredded with no salt to save its life. They could drown the flautas in a green salsa but blandness of the flautas can't be covered. Rice? Basic. Beans? Boring. Underseasoned flautas + basic rice + boring beans = mediocre food Add $50-$60 all in, it's overpriced mediocre food. Had the food been well seasoned, there would have been no food complaints. When a restaurant sends out so so food, it's like tying its own shoe laces and tripping over itself. You had 1 job: prepare your own kitchen menu well. They did not understand the assignment. Houston is full of mediocre tex mex; this place joins the list of one and done places. If you look at the plate where the flautas was served on, the plate is chipped in different places. 3 years in business, they should have new plates rotating in to take out the damaged plates from reaching diners. Now what happened next could create the scene for a future TV show: Dining Room Nightmares. These two bar flies arrived and started narrating their reality tv life which includes fights, arguments, and dumb things they are doing. Shameless, loud AF, unapologetic, very much in their FAFO era. The male bartender egging them on as if he were that enthusiastic bestie, that enables bad life choices. In the spirit of "oh no you didn't girl." hahaha What makes it worse is that these two women are bartender friends. The mentality is "the customer is always right" so that if they are loud, obnoxious, crude, it is what the customer chooses to do. Meanwhile, I was just trying to eat flautas and churros with my mom not trying to become an aspiring Netflix documentarian. Dining Room Nightmares remains a concept, without a TV show pilot. Dining out should not require a documentary to document how LOUD, CRUDE, and how LONG they were misbehaving that evening. We should not need video receipts to capture mayhem in the middle of dinner. Apparently, it's a taste issue to not want to hear 30 minutes of dropping f bombs, b&:&;, and all manner of expletive language. I am not expecting Disney standards, but basic common consideration to diners. For fact checking purposes, the facts from this diner remain: - Tap water - Mediocre food. - Overpriced - Mismanagement of bad drinkers Juan, later goes on to says the water is filtered. The comedy writes itself: "The water filters are sooooo old, you cannot tell the water is filtered." hahaha. It shows how restaurant maintenance is cutting corners and skipping basics. Come on now, all it takes is 1-3 sips to know tap water is tap water. No PhD in water needed.

The world is full of Mexican restaurants…read more Most are some version of Tex-Mex in a family-friendly, relatively similar environment. Nothing wrong with that. Mexican Sugar breaks that mold completely. This is the most legit, wonderful, bougie, over-the-top Mexican restaurant I have ever been to, and I mean that as the highest compliment possible. This was my second trip to Mexican Sugar. The first was in Grapevine. After this visit to the Montrose location, I have officially decided that when I am in Texas, I will seek these places out. They are that good. First, dress up. I doubt there is an actual dress code, but this is not the place where I am showing up looking like I just finished mowing the yard. Come here to be seen. Come here to show out a little. The place is beautiful and has that kind of vibe. Second, the drinks. Hell yes. Fancy, creative, excellent, and impressive enough for even the person who has seen every ridiculous cocktail presentation imaginable. And then there is the food. My God, the food. The salsa and queso are legit AF. The street corn is heaven in a bowl. Get several orders. I am serious. One is not enough. The carne asada was amazing. Honestly, I could keep going, but at some point this review is just going to become me yelling about how much I love Mexican Sugar. I LOVE MEXICAN SUGAR. OK, YOU GET THE IDEA. WHY AM I YELLING? BACK TO THE REVIEW.... Service was excellent too. The place is huge and was absolutely packed, but our server stayed attentive and the food came out surprisingly quickly. Make a reservation. Park in the nearby garage. Dress nice. Order the drinks. Get the street corn. Then get more street corn. Who is ready for another trip to Houston? I'll book the reservation at Mexican Sugar.

We sat across the way on their little tent set-up. It was bright, air conditioned, and decorated nicely for a tent; you honestly don't even know besides the windows. Service was quick - we ordered and our dishes came out in at a steady pace. Now the guacamole, so simple but one of the best guac I've tasted in awhile. With tomatillo chimichurri and todo seasoning served with tostadas, it was delightful. I would go back just for the guac. Tiradito de Hamachi - a Crudo with green apple ponzu, pickled jazz apples and chile and lime. So fresh and yummy! Hearts of Palm salad was refreshing and packed with so much flavor. We enjoyed it so much. Steak and Eggs had to is amazing sauce and was cooked perfectly. Masa cornbread was fantastic with a chorizo gravy. The texture was wonderful on them. We also had masa pancakes - perfectly fluffy, gritty like cornbread, my son loved it! The peach and cream on top was great but you can eat this thing by itself. Lightly sweetened and spectacular. Overall, we had an amazing meal and couldn't wait to go back to try their dinner selection. Kudos to the chef.

This was probably the worst restaurant experience I have had in a while…read more Let me preface this by saying I am a gm in the restaurant industry while my husband has been in management and serving for the last 15 years. This is an industry we strive to make better and create memorable experiences for customers. Tonight was definitely an experience to remember but it was not a positive one. To start my mother in law and sister In law arrived at 730 while my husband, mother and myself arrived at 745. I missed the server (Aisha's) greet which would given me more insight Into her ability to be personable because when we arrived she was anything but. Hardly a smile, but she did make sure to try to upsell which I did appreciate as a manager. It seemed she was more of an order taker than an experience maker which is fine but for a restaurant like candante I would hope you would seek out more than the bare minimum. I wish I could say the service was the only issue but it was not. The story continues. They sat us at table 12 which was the second booth from the back which was fine since we couldn't see the bathrooms but not ideal. Apparently this was the area for the servers to do side work and start closing first. I understand rolling silverware but you don't have to bang it right behind us while I'm trying to take a bite of my fajita taco. As soon as I did take a bite I realized the beans were ice cold and to my dismay my mothers food was cold as well. She asked them to heat it up after waiting for ten minutes to flag our waitress which we never found which was why we flagged a busboy. Not to mention our food was delivered without tortillas, prebussing or plates which we also had to flag a busboy for. The waitress did not come back until about fifteen minutes after we recieved our food and when she did she made sure to ask if we want any more food because the kitchen is closing. We only had our food for fifteen minutes and it felt like she was rushing us to get out. When we told her no she proceeded to come back at 837 and ask again. At this point I couldn't eat. They were stacking chairs to my left while people were sweeping to my right and in front of me I have a waitress that is making us feel like we are not only inconveniencing her but a bother. Mind you she was not rude but In these situations you need to be able to bounce back and gauge your audience. I am disappointed to say the least especially because I never saw a manager nor did they stop by once. It's important to touch all of your tables to ensure they are being served up to standards. We did end up staying until 945 because people were staring at us directly In front of our table. I understand labor and how cuts work but that's the name of the game. Sometimes I have let customers stay hour to an hour and a half after we close. It's not ideal but my needs are not more important than my customers. I really hope you all work on your service standards, table touching, and food standards as well.
